We enjoy touring famous homes and recently toured this mansion in Florida. After traveling through the Florida Keys, we read and heard a lot about the wealthy owner and his railroad. So, when we found out that one of his three homes was still standing and able to tour, we wanted to see it and drove up to Palm Beach.
It is beautiful! The estate is situated in an impressive setting. You park and walk up to the front gate, where you get to take in the front view. I think our guide told us the home was over 70,000 sq. ft.! He built it as a gift to his third wife. (Check the times, if you would like to go on the daily docent tours of the first floor.) Adult tickets were $18. We timed it right and joined a tour just starting. You will go through the main hall, office, music room, ballroom, billard room, dining areas, drawing room, etc. After the tour, you can wander through the rest of the home (upstair bedrooms, etc.) on your own with the audio wand. All guests are invited to use an audio wand to go through the house (with or without taking the guided tour.) Behind the home, is a newer building that houses his personal railcar that you may also tour. The amount of detail in the woodwork, ceilings, and furniture collections are amazing.
Sidenote-this is one of the few home tours where you can take photos inside (without flash) and it was thankfully air-conditioned.
