I had to make a last-minute trip to the Daytona Beach area, and as this wasn't a leisure trip, I just wanted a cheap, clean, and convenient place to stay. After scoping out the reviews on various Hilton properties (my default hotel chain) as well as some Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express locations, I was surprised to find that the Comfort Suites was higher-ranked but quite a bit less expensive. Given that I only needed to stay one night, I booked a night for $70 and hoped that TripAdvisor wouldn't let me down (it hasn't yet!).
After getting off the exit at I-95, I was a little worried to see the Comfort Suites sign nearby a horribly dingy-looking hotel. Then I realized I was looking at the Econo Lodge (which looked disgusting, by the way) which is right next to the Comfort Suites. You actually have to drive through the parking lot of the Econo Lodge to get to the Comfort Suites.
This hotel is very new - everything is sparkling clean and has that "new hotel" smell to it. The lobby was refreshingly cool on a day that threatened to break record high temperatures. The receptionist checked us in quickly and gave us our room on the second floor.
The room itself was very nice. Not fancy, but functional. It was inviting, spacious, and most importantly it was clean. The bed was very comfortable, I think it may have even had a pillow top mattress which felt firm but it had some give to it. There was a refrigerator and microwave in the room as well as a nice seating area with an LCD TV. The hotel was very quiet and I slept very well.
The continental breakfast left a bit to be desired, but being that it was included in the $70 rate I can't complain too much. The juice machine dispensed into cups that were the size of a shot glass. They did have a waffle iron, which was nice, as well as several cereals and a few mediocre pastries. Also the standard bread and bagels which could be toasted. They had four different types of coffees which were quite good - they were even serving hot coffee when we headed up to bed around 10:30PM.
All in all, the Comfort Suites name didn't rouse much optimism as I usually never consider that chain, however the reviews were too much to argue against so we gave this one a try and I'm glad we did. It is a fantastic value of a hotel especially given that it appears to be brand new. Don't hesitate - I'm a picky hotel guy and even I was pleased.
