“Welcome Home - as they say!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2014

Over the years we have been to several Orlando hotels, destination - Disney World. But in the last 10 years we have chosen to stay at the Contemporary Resort, Magic Kingdom side of the tower. So we have seen many changes, some good, some not so good. It was during this last trip (a week ago) that I saw and felt some of the magic slipping. Lets talk about the good first. Beautiful hotel, nice new linens and carpeting, clean, friendly employees, good food. The location is breathtaking, and convenience a huge plus. Now some things that bugged me: Generic napkins, generic white bags, noticeable lack of employees, no life guard at the top of the water slide. The emergency card on our door was marked with a different room number. I think that bothered me the most as these cards are used in emergencies. Granted maybe a few kids switched them or marked them but they should all be checked. And I let management know that. Last issue is cost. Yes it is expensive but there are ways to save. We have been saving our Disney Visa points for 3 years. We also have AAA which gets us another discount. Then we choose to vacation during Value Season, also a good deal. Park tickets were bought 2 years ago when they were on sale. 3 day Park Hopper Passes 2 days free!. And flying Southwest I was able to get a decent airfare. And travel to and from the airport we used the Disney Magical Express, and buses to parks when needed so there was no rental car. You can easily drop $5k on a vacation like this but our trip was just over $3K. Yes that is still not cheap but we don't go on vacation every year and we enjoy the anticipation of our next trip. So if you plan on spending $1k on a weeks vacation every year then waiting 3 years to do a Disney vacation can be doable. Just my humble opinion.

This hotel was wonderful. The staff, rooms, everything. We stayed on the atrium level which allowed us access to our own concierge service as well as food and drinks throughout the day. the hotel staff was amazing and the food was exceptional. We cannot wait to go back.

Room Tip: Choose the atrium level.

We stayed in 2 adjoining rooms for our stay with 3 young children. This hotel is a breath of fresh air. We've stayed at the Wilderness Lodge (too dark and crowded for us. Pool is great, but could barely fit in it there were so many people and it was LOUD). We've stayed at the Grand Floridian (beautiful hotel and lovely, would stay there again) I prefer the Contemporary to all of the above mentioned due to walkability to the Magic Kingdom, proximity to monorail and water shuttle, quality and style of decor and general subtle Disney theming. While it is obvious that you are at DW, they don't hit you over the head with it.

We experienced the character themed breakfast at Chef Mickey's (make reservations far in advance!) located at the Contemporary hotel. It is fantastic. Fun for the kids and a fantastic selection of breakfast foods. There are two gift shops on site outside Chef Mickey's offering toys, souvenirs and apparel.

The rooms are beautiful and sophisticated in neutral tones. The be linens were soft and pillows were great. The hotel is very clean! Our kids watched fireworks over the castle each night. It was truly a memorable stay.

The main pool area is stark by Disney standards, but sufficient with a large pool, smaller pool on the lagoon, water slide and sprinkler pad for lots of splashing fun. Our kids enjoyed the ping pong tables at the pool.

The food in the hotel was quite good. The concierge was very helpful with all of our requests and questions.

It is a fantastic option if you choose to stay on site and want a bit of a calmer, more sophisticated hotel experience.

Decor is reminiscent of the 1980s, from the pictures on the walls and the peeling wallpaper. Their free wi-fi is split between the one in your room and the one you use anywhere else on the property, and both are sporadic at best. The schedule for the buffets never worked out for us but their dining room, The Wave, has very good food at reasonable prices. After a day at one of the parks, a drink is in order. Unfortunately, their lobby bar closes at 9pm and we found the Wave Bar closing down early at 11:30pm when it's supposed to be open until midnight, which is still too early. This hotel conveniently has the monorail that comes through the center of the hotel and the pools are well maintained. A good choice for families, and there were zillions of them, but I think that next time I go, I would try Disney's Polinesian Village, which also has the monorail feature.

We just got back from a trip to the Contemporary. We had originally booked a garden wing room which was half of what we ended up paying for upgrading to a tower room with a theme park view. We had never been to this resort, so we figured we wanted the best experience. At some of the other Disney properties when you get one of the higher level rooms you get what you pay for, but we felt that wasn't the case here. While we were able to see the fireworks from our balcony, it wasn't worth the extra. I actually would have preferred to watch the fireworks from a ground level, looking up. As it was, it was just like watching fireworks from a distance. Not worth double the cost.

The rooms were spacious and the bathroom was very large which is nice. Also, the room was decorated pretty nicely, although there wasn't enough attention to detail in my opinion for a room that's over $400 per night. For example, the floor lamp in our room was lopsided and wobbled back and forth. Not a big deal, but I don't think I'd see that at a good room in a Hyatt Regency.

Oddly enough, we didn't find the usual Disney "magic" with the employees at this resort. Some were nice enough, but there were many that were unprofessional. We observed a couple of young employees at the front desk who appeared to be people watching and laughing, making faces, etc as people walked by. Again, not what you'd see at a nice, high-end hotel. Most of the store employees were nice, but at one trip we approached the counter where 3 employees were standing (without any other customers at the check out counter) and none of the 3 made eye contact with us or said anything. We literally stood there with our products on the counter for an odd many seconds until one of them finally looked up and acknowledged us. They were not busy, either, just standing there. While noone was that worked there was rude, all of this takes away from the experience, especially at Disney. At the other resorts we've stayed at (many times), these types of things usually don't happen.

A strange thing was even the guests here seemed rushed and unrelaxed. We were amazed every time we went to a surrounding resort (Wilderness Lodge and Polynesian) at the change in atmosphere where even the guests seemed more peaceful and happy. The Contemporary just didn't have that feel to it.

Another thing that we weren't happy with was the food. The counter service area is probably a forth of the size of the other resorts' counter service areas. Because of this, it was over crowded and hard to find a seat. The food was terrible there, although we aren't big on fast food anyway, but the other Disney properties have much better choices. We tried The Wave at night for dinner and were also let down. The food was not good. These are the only 2 places we ate at on the hotel property. After those experiences, we quickly made reservations for surround resort restaurants for other meals which were much better.

One of the nice things about the hotel was the monorail. It's nice to be able to wait indoors in air conditioning while going to a park. It was also very nice to be able to ride the quick ride rather than going on a bus. The service for the monorail was great and was fairly fast.

The boat to Wilderness Lodge was also nice. We made dinner reservations there after being disappointed with the contemporary's food. The restaurant there (Artist Point) was fantastic. It was great to take a boat ride to go to dinner, too.

All in all, the rooms were nice, but we probably won't stay here again. If we do it will definitely only be in the garden wing because the prices in the tower just aren't worth it for us. We will reserve those trips for the Animal Kingdom Lodge or Polynesian where there are many upsides to the stay.

We chose a Theme Park View. We've stayed at Disney on property 3 times before but never on the monorail line so we thought we would try it out. In a lot of ways, this hotel feels like the convention hotel it is. It lacked that Disney magic despite being in the land of Chef Mickey's and the ever present monorail. The pool is very dated compared to other hotels like the Animal Kingdom Lodge or Beach Club. Having a room that overlooked the Magic Kingdom was its own kind of magic. And being able to see the fireworks from our balcony was nice. I however wouldn't stay here again. If you are a family that plans on spending the majority of your time in the Magic Kingdom I can see how it would be appealing. But we tend to spread our time throughout the various parks. I must say the concierce staff is awesome. They went out of their way to make our visit special.

This year we were able to stay at a Deluxe hotel. We chose the Contempoary. It's a very nice hotel; rooms are clean and very nice. We stayed in the Garden Wing, as staying in the tower is VERY expensive. The walk from the Garden Wing to the tower is just one minute; and, the walkway is covered, so if it rains like typical Florida does, you'll be safe.

We ate at the Contempo Cafe a few times; food is okay. We went to other Deluxe resorts on the monorail and had a better experience eating lunch at the quick service restaurants there.

Service is great at the Contemporary; the people at the Check-In Counters were very nice. One lady gave us a free Fastpass+ because Mousekeeping forgot to come to our room on a family member's birthday.

Overall we had a great time at Disney. If you have thousands of dollars to blow on a Disney trip, try going to the Contempoary.

Room Tip: If staying in the Garden Wing, try getting a room that doesn't face the parking lot. There may b...
