Firstly, this hotel is a great place to stay and I would return here again. However, there are a few issues.
When we arrived (2 adults) we were looking to get a tower room, we were not given one, which my partner was extremely annoyed about. The guy said he would "upgrade" us to a king size bed, almost to make up for not putting us in the tower, he said this "upgrade" was free..the only difference in the rooms was the bed, so it was barely an upgrade. He said tower rooms were charged at $30 per night, which over a 2 week holiday adds up, so we took the king size bed room. Apart from this, check in and out was quick and easy enough.
After that, most things ran smoothly. The hotel is well situated on International drive, it is not right in the hustle and bustle looking on to I-drive, just a short walk. You can go out the back gate and walk across the car park to Seaworld, and Aquatica is also walking distance. However, if like many you don't walk, I highly recommend getting a 2 week pass or however long your there for the i-ride trolley. $17 per person unltd for the entire time. It is stop 29, and the stops run from 1 north to 42 north and vice versa on south, so your in the middle of the main route. Lynx buses are also easily accessible, right outside hotel at $2 per person for one way. I heard that the hotel does do shuttle buses to universal etc, but we were not told about this. I would say this is where this hotel downfalls. They issue you with very little information about how to get about unless you expressively ask. When we asked how to get to universal easiest, the staff at reception told us get the i-ride to wet and wild and walk across the bridge which was about a 20 min walk in blistering heat. On our last day, we actually found out you can transfer on the i-ride route to the green route i think it is..which will take you right to universal. Adding on, there was overall little information provided by the hotel about how to get about, so I would ask the conceirge or front desk, but ask the cheapest, easiest way and ask about all bus options, as its as though they give the info, which isnt always the best.
Also, as we were in one of the "motel" like rooms around the resort, the maid carts in the morning are noisy to say the least. We used the key biscayne pool (there are 3 pools at resort, 1 kids pool), one day a conference full of teenagers were at the resort, which its fair to say does not bother us if they play their games in the pool, however, my boyfriend had not been in the pool that day and came back to the room soaking wet because a teenager had constantly been diving and bombing in the pool, and constantly soaked guests, which meant everyone left the pool due to this. I phoned the careline to see if any of the pool were adult only to which i got the reply if there are teenagers on the resort, it will be noisy..fair enough, but they caused a pool full of people to depart, to which nothing was done about, or the teenagers even approached by staff to reinforce the big no diving signs..so staff were little help there.
The rooms...NOT all rooms have safes..ours did..a motel type one, but im not sure that tower rooms do. We did NOT have a bath, microwave or fridge. Another room we visited was the same as ours and did have a bath, so if your taking kids, please check your room does have a bath and not just shower if need be. Also, this hotel has no balconies, so if your used to drying clothes off the balcony, this wont work. In saying that, we did see some closed off balconies further through the resort, but ground floor and 2nd floor motels normally dont have. There is guest laundry area, $3 to use and $1 to buy detergants etc. A big issue I didnt like in the rooms, were the adjoining doors to other rooms. I do not like this design, there is no need for it..make sure it is constantly locked and double check it!
Rooms have hairdrier and tv with cable also.
Staff are friendly and helpful, overall, especially deli, house keeping etc. Hotel is clean and well maintained. Pizza hut and shop on site for breakfast etc, for 2 adults about $12 or so. However Village Inn across road is good, good selection, cheap, and 10% if you say your staying at doubletree.
Overall, I would stay at this hotel again, but request a tower room, as I think they are the ones with micro/fridge etc. This would be alot better. Free wifi in lobby is good, but should be complimentary in all rooms in this day and age. Generally, good hotel, recommend to all, families, couples, kids etc. Would return in future!
