We loved our stay at Fort Wilderness. Our family of five (kids ages are 7, 4 and4) had a cabin in the 2100 loop and things couldn't have been easier or more comfortable.
The best part of Fort Wilderness for us was that it was a great respite from the busyness of the Disney parks. It was so nice to return to our quiet cabin in the middle of the day and let the kids rest in their own bedroom. Even though there were people in the cabins around us we never had any problems with noise. The cabin was clean and housekeeping did a great job every day. The kids loved coming back to the cabin and finding the cute creatures that housekeeping had made out of the towels.
In reading other reviews, we've noticed that lots of people rent the golf carts. We personally didn't find them necessary at all. We walked one block to the bus stop and never waited more than ten minutes for a bus. The pool and the general store were about three blocks away.
Fort Wilderness offers great transportation to the Magic Kingdom via the ferry. Epcot is easily accessable from the Magic Kingdom. We didn't go to Animal Kingdom or MGM so we don't really know how long it takes to get from FW to either of those locations.
Trails End restaurant had a great buffet. Plenty of choices for everyone and all of it good. There was a snack/lunch shop set up by the pool that was great for quick lunches.
If you have kids, definitely take in Chip n' Dale's Campfire. Our kids loved meeting the characters and roasting marshmallows.
One of our nicest Disney experiences was watching the MK fireworks from the beach at FW. If you want to avoid the crowds and the chaos of getting out of the park after the fireworks, this is the way to go. The fireworks were proceeded by an electric light and music parade that came by on barges. Probably not as spectacular as the parade at Disney, but a great alternative.
As a final word, our best Disney advice would be plan, plan, plan. We were there in July, a very busy season, and because we had a plan we never waited in line more than 20 minutes. Most waits were less than ten minutes. Buy Bob Sehlinger's "Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World" and use one of his touring plans. If you are going to spend a lot of money going to Disney (and let's face it, it's going to be a lot of money no matter what you do), use your time there wisely and get the most out of the whole experience. We had an absolute blast!
