We have always wanted to try Flying Fish Cafe at Disney but we often could not fit it into our schedule. The Boardwalk is just not an area we frequent that often. I am glad we made time for it as it is one of the better Disney restaurants I have been to. You can read all my reviews and you will notice that I am a big fan of checking these places out.
Atmosphere - The place is very nice. Has its own decor and definitely its own feel I does not feel at all like a Disney restaurant so if you are looking for a place to take the kids for a Disney experience, this is probably not what you are looking for. I love the ceiling decor with the fish on balloons. This is nowhere near street side and you will not see any cars in the area. Parking is ok as long as the lot is not full but its quite a walk for visitor as opposed to resort guests of the Boardwalk. Nonetheless, I don't mind the walk but for those whom have people with them that have difficulty walking, may I suggest you drop them off at the front of the resort. We had a table against the window but it really does not give a lot of view of the boardwalk. Needless to say that this is not a deal breaker as there is tons to see in the restaurant itself.
Service - No complaints here. Our server was attentive. We did not feel rushed whatsoever and he took care of everything we needed. Made some good honest suggestions. The waiter told us a story about how he studied up on the menu before he had started working here which tells me he takes it seriously. However, he did say that once he started working there, turns out that the menu changes constantly and often whats here today is gone tomorrow. Again a great point to make since it sounds like diners can expect a refreshed selection often.
Food - Very good. Unique flavors that will make the meal memorable. The portion is about right for what I expected. Not huge that you would have to be rolled out of there. Plus you want to be able to enjoy a bit of what the Boardwalk has to offer after your meal. One thing that we did order was the cheese sampler that came with a card describing the origin of each cheese and a bit of information on what to expect. I liked it a lot and definitely worth trying. The waiter offered us some more bread chips for the cheese but we didn't need it. I guess if I was really hungry, its nice to see that they allow for some refills. My wife, being a seafood lover surprised me when she ordered a steak. Her steak was done exactly the way I make it. A lot of restaurants shy away from charring the outside of the steak a little. I am a big fan of it since it gives it so many different flavors. They charred it just right. I am not talking just grill marks but some charring on the ends. Is it healthy for you... I really don't know but it sure does taste good. I had a white fish that was perfectly prepared with excellent flavor.
Overall - Looking for a nice dinner at Disney? This is a good place to go. Very classy and can be a very romantic setting. This immediate area of Disney seems to sport a lot of great restaurants that do not scream Disney as just on the other side of the lake is Yachtman's which in my opinion is tops. Perhaps the competition between the 2 has helped to improve their offerings. However, next time I am going to be around the Boardwalk area for dinner, I am going to be torn between these 2 restaurants.
