There is a huge area of the park that hosts Beast's Castle so it was surprising to find that this restaurant is the main attraction. There is Belle's story time just outside the gate, and Gaston's tavern for quick service food, but that's it! So we had to experience it! My thoughts are that the food was ok to good, seeing the ballroom once is enough, and that I wish Disney had made a ride to tour the castle so there was more to do with this beloved set of characters.
I couldn't get dinner reservations and I hear they are booked for months. The only option was to wait in a very long line for lunch, which does not accept reservations, so that is what we did. We got in line by 10:30 am and waited a very long time because the line moves slowly.
While in line, they pass out menus so you can decide in advance what you want to order. Eventually you move into the castle where you order your food at kiosks. The kiosks are not manned, but there are people roaming the room if you need help. The kiosks have pictures of each food item. What we picked out in line changed when we saw pictures of the actual dishes come up on the kiosk. I think this is why the line moves slowly.
We ordered 2 of the carved prime roast beef sandwiches with horseradish, one with green beans and one with french fries, and one order of the braised pork with mashed potatoes and green beans. For dessert we ordered a lemon meringue cupcake.
After ordering, you move further into the castle to select a table for dining. The restaurant seats over 500 people in 3 different rooms. The ballroom is obviously the biggest and we found it to be a perfect re-creation of the movie scene. Very beautiful! Although 2 story and large, we did not find it overly noisy or congested. The West Wing was "dark" and "scary" to us, and quite small. Belle's library was also small, but upbeat. We did not have much choice of seating but got a table next to the windows in the ballroom which was perfect! They have recreated snow falling outside the windows.
The most magical thing about the dining experience is the servers who are able to find you at whatever table you pick! I still can't figure out how they did that. Some people say it is the wrist bands you wear that have a location beacon. While I love the idea, it scared me a little to think that Disney can track my every move if this is true!
The meals were generally delicious. My only complaint was that the green bean medleys were very "peppery". If I can't eat them as an adult, how are kids supposed to get them down? Also, the lemon meringue cupcake was just so-so. Very filling portion sizes. My girls wished they had split the sandwich, but my boys would have eaten the whole thing.
My advice is to use the bathrooms before coming in. We waited in line so long that by the time we ate, we were ready for the restrooms. The ladies restroom has very few stalls, like maybe 5 (I should have counted to know for sure). I don't understand why Disney would build a 550 seat restaurant with so few stalls. Major mistake! The line wrapped outside the door with a substantial wait.
This was nice for a visit, but once you have seen it once, you don't need to go back unless you love the food. I wish Disney had made a ride of some type that toured the castle, instead of just having the restaurant.
