This hotel is located just north of Orlando International Airport. It's a good location, in a business park with several restaurants you can walk to.
I arrived very late, after a long day of work. All I wanted to do was check in and go to bed.
Unfortunately, as I arrived, I discovered that the parking lot was being seal coated the next day, so 2/3 of it was blocked off and unusable. There were signs posted suggesting that guests park in the parking lots of the surrounding restaurants instead. Ordinarily, no big deal, but like I said, I was tired that day, and the last thing I wanted to do was schlep my luggage an extra 50 yards. (Incidentally, the parking lot looked fine. I don't know why they were coating it).
So, I got inside and went to the desk. The desk clerk was on a personal phone call and I had to wait for her to finish. This WAS annoying. Finally she got off the phone and gave me a room.
One of the reasons I stay at Wingates when traveling is that they are all 100% internet accessible, which I need. However, the first room had a problem with the internet. I came back to the desk, talked to the clerk about it, and called tech support. After a while, we concluded that the internet in this room was just not working and there was no way to fix it. So, I lugged my bag back down to the lobby again, got assigned to a different room, and moved.
This second room had working internet, but was dirty! There were hairs all over the bathroom and looked like someone had spilled something on the desk and it hadn't been cleaned up properly.
At this point, I was so tired I didn't care. I checked my email, and went back to the front desk to drop off the internet cable, with the intention of just going to bed.
The front desk clerk, who had been too busy and unfriendly before, actually became nice all of a sudden; when I came to return the cable, she asked how my new room was. I mentioned offhand that it wasn't clean, but that I didn't intend to make a stink about it because I was tired, I didn't want to move again, and I was just going to go to bed. She was apologetic, and I assumed this was the end of it.
All of these things were very annoying. I think I probably caught the property on an "off day" because it has a lot of positive reviews, and frankly if it were this bad all the time it could not stay in business.
When I went to check out the next morning, much to my surprise, the morning clerk mentioned that the night clerk had told her about the problem with my room, and she had gotten the manager to give me 50% off the room for that night. She tore up my bill and gave me a corrected one for half off. Because of this, and the fact that they were very apologetic and accommodating, I would consider staying here again and giving them a chance to do better next time.
