When I lived in the Orlando area, I was so pleased to hear about Beto's Mexican restaurants. There was one in Fern Park in Seminole County, which was fairly close to Oviedo, and this other location near Florida Mall. Since then, the Fern Park location has closed.
I've loved fish tacos ever since visiting Southern California and Beto's has really good fish tacos. The drawback with this location is that the English is limited, and my Spanish is more limited than it was four years ago when I lived in the area and used Spanish many times each week.
When approaching this restaurant, you'll think the worst. It's not chic, it's quite tacky looking, and inside, it's worn. However, I go to restaurants mainly for the food, and if they're not dirty, what else matters, really?
The ladies at the counter and I got through it somehow, though when I asked for a certain drink, they would just point at the drink machine.
As fish tacos require frying breaded fish, it took a while to get the food. One plate barely held two tacos. They come (quite properly) in soft, fried white corn tortillas--not those flour tortillas other places use because they find frying tortillas an extra pain. The lettuce was fresh and the sauce was excellent, and the fish, quite rightly, was tasty.
When I was in the area, I'd go to the other Beto's location about once a week. This location is more convenient for travellers, and it's open 24 hours each day. I'd caution being out late at night, though, if you're going to be in any restaurant along South Orange Blossom Trail around there.
