We just returned home this week from 2 weeks at the Pop Century. While we were in the planning stage and trying to decide whether to stay at a Disney hotel or off the property, we read a lot of reviews and were even more torn on some of our decisions but here is how our vacation went, hope this helps.
Our kids are 9&1/2 and 6&1/2 perfect ages. Save yourself time, money and the hassels of going with kids still in diapers or even strollers. We saw a lot of exhausted people hauling around strollers, diaper bags, etc. our opinion, wait till they are old enough to enjoy it and walk through the parks themselves (5 minimum). Plus we didn't wear ourselves out, we were on vacation after all. We would get up, have breakfast in our room (cereal we brought from home and milk was $2.95 a gallon at the food court) go to the park till early afternoon, return to Pop Century around 1:30-2:00 and get something to eat and swim for the rest of the afternoon, then return to the park we were at early that day (this way we didn't need the hopper option) until it closed usually after the fireworks/show around 9:30. The break in the middle of the day refreshed everybody and I wouldn't do it any other way!! The only park we stayed all day was Animal Kingdom 'cause it closes at 6:00.
Room - not as small as some reviews lead you to believe. Comparable to a Holiday Inn. 2 double beds, table & 2 chairs, open closet area, iron & board, sink area seperate from the bathroom (good for a couple of people getting ready) dresser unit with a 27" TV, small safe. We did hear some tiolets flushing but not until the 2nd week and it never woke me.
Food - buy the refillible mugs, saved us a small fortune, coke products, coffee, tea, hot chocklate, water, apple juice, slushies at your resort for your entire stay. Kids meals were $3.99, (ex.4 nuggets & fries with a small bag of fish crackers) Adults - double cheeseburger with fries $6.59, chicken caesar salad with a bread stick $6.59, I thought the prices were comparable to any mall food court, plus they had salads, sandwiches, cookies, pissa, lazana, etc. (An added note: they had a microwave there and we used it a couple of times to heat up an easy mac, again brought from home, for our daughter)
Buses - ran like clockwork, never had to wait more than 10 minutes, even when the parks close, when the crowds are larger there are a lot more buses! Plus the new Magical Express at the airport was great. We never got our vouchers before we left but at the airport we just followed all the Disney people who are there directing you where to go and once at the desk we were given our return vouchers too. The only thing was our luggage never got to the Pop Century till about 5 hours after we did. We had enough clothes in our carry on luggage so it was not a problem. (Also, make sure to have sunscreen in your carry on's)
We walked around the resort a couple of times and really its only a couple of minutes walk from anywhere to the food area. But if you want to be really close to the food/gift shop area stay in the 60's era poolside. We stayed in the 50's bldg. A on the ground floor poolside and it was perfect. If you want a quite place I'd try for a top floor facing the lake, not the pool in any era.
We never had a car and didn't need one. If you are going to do Disney you don't need one. But if you want to do a lot of shopping, cabs can get expensive. A cab from Sea World cost us $25.00 US and the Premimum Outlet mall from downtown disney was $9.00 US, to the Wal-Mart on I-192 in Kissimmee was $25.00 but there was a super Target closer I saw on the way to wal-mart.
Overall it was great, I'm glad we did it the way we did and would recommend the Pop Century to anybody, especially families. Hope this helps somebody!
