“Old Keybest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

Just stayed at this resort over Christmas using the Disney transport to and from the airport and to and from the parks. Now if you are looking for a lively full on Disney resort this is NOT for you and you will be disappointed, it's a quiet retreat to come back to after a busy time at the parks and to me this was heaven! I had a 1 bedroom villa which was very spacious with a full size kitchen area and balcony. I had to wait no longer than 20 minutes for a bus to the parks sometimes I only waited 5 minutes and they were never crowded unlike a lot of the other buses leaving the parks to all the other resorts. Downtown Disney was closest to the resort and there is an amazing 20 minute walk along the river which no one seems to use if you don't fancy taking the bus or ferry boat. All the parks are between 10-15 minutes ride once on the bus.

Room Tip: Avoid the following villas as they back onto the main highway 19-22 38-39 41-42 and 49-51.

This resort is the greatest! You can walk after dark and feel very safe. There are several pools and a really nice restaurant. The bar is good and the rooms are clean and spacious. Everyone is friendly. The parks are close and the buses run constantly. It is a dream vacation spot. You can park next to your room. Just the best!!

We treated the family to a Christmas trip to Disney and wanted to pick up the tab for everything including the meals. That meant staying at a resort on the Disney property so we could buy the meal plan. We had six adults and three kids in our party, and wanted to stay all together, so we booked one of the villas at the Old Key West Resort. The accommodations were adequate, the location was good, and the amenities at the resort such as the pool were good. It just wasn't as nice as we expected it would be. The unit was large but the layout was awkwardly designed, space was wasted, and the unit and furnishings seemed a little worn and tired.

On the plus side - it was great having the washer and dryer, the kids loved the pool, it was so convenient being right by the buses to the parks, and we really enjoyed having the little takeout restaurant nearby.

We have never stayed any of the other resorts so we are not sure how it stacks up with the other villas that sleep nine. Next time we would be tempted to spring for something that offered more comfortable and flexible space.

We booked a studio with a friends points. I have to say the room was spacious, nice kitchenette with a toaster, paper plates and washing soap, it was a quite resort probably because it didn't have an attractions or a big lobby to visit. It has a great pool. The resort had a boat to downtown disney which came in handy. I would definitely go back. The only downfall was the rooms are not cleaned every day, you have to empty your own trash and make your own beds.

Room Tip: Book a room close to the lobby so you don't have to walk far to fill your mugs.

My family (5 adults, 2 children) visited Walt Disney in December and stayed at Old Key West on the recommendation of a friend. We had a great experience and really enjoyed the accommodations. The unit was large and fit all of us very comfortably. Rooms were nice and clean, the pools and hot tubs were great and hardly used while we were there. The buses were efficient and regular. Even the water taxi to downtown Disney was fun (buses and boat were free). And the atmosphere of the resort was a lot of fun, nice trees, canals, and wildlife.

A few negatives: bathrooms seemed to be neglected with some mold and mildew in a ring around the bottom of the bathroom walls. The salt water and humidity is difficult to combat, but some of it was ignored. Dust and stray hairs of other guests on the first day (they cleaned every day which was nice). A few odd stains on chairs and couch cushions, one was almost certainly gum and cushion wasn't turned over. Dropped my phone under the couch, found a few years worth of crumbs and dust covering it when recovered. Some of the beds were old and worn out, and didn't include the fitted sheet for the pull out sofa (was given the second day when they cleaned and made the beds). Three of our party took the airport shuttle when leaving: their flight was 7am (domestic) but they were told to be on the bus at 3:20am in order to arrive 2 hours early, which seemed an excessive amount of time. Lastly, I know it's common these days, but I always cry a little inside when I see domestic beers on sale for $6 a bottle (this was in the resort's gift shop). Value is always relative to other options, but it's quite expensive.

12/5 - 12/12/12 - We are DVC owners and OKW is one of my home resorts. We have not stayed here since 05 and we were really looking forward to our stay here. Our studio was ready when we checked in at noon. Wow, I had forgotten how spacious and much bigger the studios are at OKW compared to the other DVC resort studios. The studio consists of two queen beds, kitchenette and balcony. Everything was clean and in working order. We had no complaints. OKW is a condo style resort. Since we did not have a car, we requested Hospitality House and we were in building 11 - directly across the check-in/restaurant/shop area. Having said that we did not have a car, we never waited more than 5 minutes for a bus at OKW (or the parks). We love the relaxed feeling. We usually had breakfast at a table outside from Goods to Go by the marina. Nice scene to have breakfast each morning. We had dinner at Olivia's twice - their sit down restaurant. We used the gym twice (treadmill) - while on the small side, it was more than adequate and there were always only two or three other people using it. There is a great community hall and lots of other activities here (rent boats, bikes, watch movies outside at night, etc.). OKW was decorated really pretty for Christmas. I miss it already. Great time to visit.

Now I know why my DVC friend likes this resort the best. Lucky me got to stay here with her for a few days. We had a one-bedroom on the first floor. It was perfect. There were three of us ladies; two slept in the king size bed and I slept on a twin sleeper which was very comfortable. The bathroom included a jacuzzi and big walk in shower. The LR/DR/kitchen combo was spacious and included everthing one would need for a longer stay including cookware & serveware. It also included a laundry room, even providing detergent. Although we didn't eat at Olivia's, my friend commented that the breakfasts are superb. She has been a DVC member for 20+ years, has stayed in virtually every resort, but always tries to get into Old Key West. I am so fortunate to be able to experience this excellent resort.
