“Not what we expected.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

We have just returned from a two week break at Old Key West. We were a little dissapointed with the accomodation, and the facilities on offer compared to Port Orleans, especially when it is rated as a luxury resort, and Port Orleans is a moderate. Don't dismiss it though, as it is a nice resort, but for us there was something missing. The rooms are not very well soundproofed, we could hear neighbours conversations, and traffic noise if near to roadways. We had to move appartments because of a maintenance issue. Disney were very good to us,and compensated us, but the room we moved to was near to the road, and we had disturbed sleep. That and the noisy A/C. We could have gone to Saratoga Springs for the same money, and we decided to have a look there. The ambience is more upmarket, and i suppose more of a hotel feel, which is what we expected at Old Key West. You might need a car, as the resort is over a large area. Olivia's restaurant serves very nice food with excellent service. The small cafe is very limited and we kept finding the Sprite was never available. I don't want to be too negative because we did enjoy our stay, and you have to go a long way to beat Disney for service and quality.

Room Tip: Rooms with a four digit number starting with a 5 seemed to be in a very peaceful, quiet area.

This was our family's first stay at a DVC resort, and first trip to Disney in 7 years, and we really loved staying here. We have four children 10 and under, so a standard hotel room is out. We booked a 2 bedroom suite, and were absolutely floored by the size of the rooms. You just don't see hotel rooms this size. Each room, family room, both bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms, were larger than you would expect or need. With six of us staying here, it seemed like there was easily room for several more. I had seen the floor plans online before we arrived, but you just have to see it to appreciate how oversized the rooms are.

Because these are condo-style rooms, parking is great--right outside your room. We stayed on the third floor, but it was no big deal to carry luggage up and down one time each. There is no noise from other neighboring units. Sure, we were on the top floor, but we heard nothing and there were no complaints about any noise we might have made. The buildings are very solidly built, so it is all just very quiet, and of course with condo-style buildings you don't have any hallway noise or elevators. Our view was beautiful, with a private balcony overlooking the water and a golf green. The units all contain a full kitchen, which saved us on having to eat out for expensive meals all the time. Even if you don't want to cook (and we didn't), it is nice to just have simple breakfasts and some snack food around. We didn't make use of the laundry, but it was there if needed. Also, a pack-and-play was included in the room, which saved us from having to bring one.

The resort grounds are very nice and the people were very nice and helpful as well. I saw all the grounds on my morning jogs, and the resort is nicely spread out. The kids loved the main pool, especially the water slide. They also participated in some of the afternoon games at the community center. The arcade was pretty weak (according to the kids). We did not eat at the restaurants at the resort. The theme of the resort is not Mickey-heavy, but I can honestly say none of my 4 kids noticed or cared a bit. There is plenty of Mickey Mouse fun to be had, this was just a great family resort. In fact, by the end of the week, the kids were asking to leave the theme parks early to spend more time at the resort in the pool.

Old Key West is very close to Epcot, and slightly farther from the other parks. However, there are buses dedicated to the resort that go to each theme park and stop in several locations through the resort. The Magic Kingdom one, in particular, was a huge time-saver because it drops you right at the entrance to the park (no monorail or ferry needed). Downtown Disney is extremely close, and can be reached via a nature path or ferry boat from the resort.

We really loved staying at OKW. The outsized accommodations will be hard to forget anytime we stay somewhere else. We visited some other resorts during our vacation, such as the Beach and Yacht Club. Those were very nice and had more restaurants, but it really stood out how much busier they were as well. After living in the peaceful calm of OKW for the week, the busy-ness of some of the other places was disarming. We found this to be an excellent place to stay for families, but I think anyone traveling to Disney would like OKW and I would highly recommend it.

We stayed here for 5 nights as DVC members for the first time and were impressed. Apparently the resort has fairly recently been refurbished so the rooms are spacious, comfortable and well presented. The resort is a boat ride from Downtown Disney, although it is a bit further away from the parks. Pool area is very nice. We enjoyed our stay.

Welcome to the Disney Retirement Village known as Old Key West. Definitely had the feel of a condo complex and not a Disney Property. Which is not the same as saying it wasn't a nice place, because it is beautiful. If you are looking to stay in Disney without feeling immersed in Mickey then this is your place.

Cons: check-in is a disaster, people just waiting on rooms, and no information from the staff except it will be ready by 4. Staff had attitudes. From the front desk, to the community hall workers, to the lifeguard who looked for any reason to blow whistle and yell at people. Thankfully I never was on the receiving end but definitely noticed a lot of it which I never experienced at a Disney Property. No elevators, have fun with those bags.

Pros: rooms are huge with large patio. Our room overlooked the golf course which is also another plus to OKW. Regular bus service with minimal waits and boat transportation to downtown. Olivia's restaurant is outstanding, one of the best prime rib I have had. The onion rings at the pool window were addicting. Running trail around the property and golf course, just watch out for the buses. Clean, clean, clean. Big pool, never really crowded, even in the summer heat. Beautiful scenery everywhere. There are also multiple pools spread out throughout the property. The property is spread out, but definitely can be walked.

For me, having a young child and still being a grown child myself, the resort was just not the right atmosphere. However, I can definitely see the appeal for those who wan't a little more serenity.

This was by far my favorite resort to stay in Disney. It's actually very quiet, yet full of families! The pool area is great and features an awesome water slide that even at 28, went down about 20 times! You can take a "ferry" to Downtown Disney which is A LOT of fun. Lots of shops, restaurants and entertainment. Loved it! The villa we stayed in was beautiful as well -- as far as cost, I can't say yay or nay to the pricing since my grandparents are part of the Disney Vacation Club and got it themselves, but I can say it was quite an enjoyable experience!

Room Tip: Get the Grand Villa if you have more than 10 people like we did -- it's HUGE and well worth it.

We were in Building 46 from Sat to Sat. Very large 1 BR condo that we agreed was liveable not just for a vacation. Building 46 gives you a view of and up the canal used by the boats serving the resort. The Hospitality House (main area) is about three tenths of a mile, and the bus stop is about half that. In over 30 years of time share exchanges, this was the best or tied for the best property ever. Very good fitness center and other amenities. Not sure how we could have had a better place to stay. OKW even has free WiFi now.

Room Tip: Time share exchange. We could not have gone for posted rates. Ask for a unit with golf course or w...

Back again to our favorite Orlando spot for some family.

We had to move rooms after the first night due to noise. The staff handled it amazingly well, and we were in our new room in no time.

Great community hall to hang out in when it rained, and a great pool to goof around in when it was sunny.

It was one of the most relaxing Disney trips ever - the resort was not crazy busy, and the staff were really friendly.

Room Tip: Try to get a room near the Hospitality House
