We spent a couple of months preparing for our trip to Orlando. We checked out books from the library, bought The Unofficial Guide to WDW, and asked questions on the Orlando Forum to gain insight as to how best to tackle the parks. All of our planning really payed off! We had a fantastic time in Florida and came home with no regrets. We did everything we wanted to do and even had time to spare.
The key to our success was getting to the parks before they opened. We studied the layout for each park and made a list as to what rides we would ride and those that we would get Fastpasses for. Upon the park opening, my husband would go get the Fastpasses while my son and I would stand in line for another attraction. We found that when you get there first thing the times between Fastpass distribution was shorter. If we got a Fastpass at 9:00, we could get our next one after 10:00! As the morning progressed the time span increased to the 2-hour span.
Also, you do not have to use your Fastpass within the hour window on the pass. You can use it anytime after it begins. As an example, my husband got Fastpasses first thing in the morning for Space Mtn while the rest of us waited for him in line at Big Thunder. The Fastpasses were valid from 9:10-10:10 and we could get our next Fastpass at 9:10. As the two rides are on opposite ends of each other, it didn't make sense to go back over to Tomorrowland. We rode Splash Mtn, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, got a Fastpass for Peter Pan, watched Philharmagic and didn't get back to Space Mtn. until after lunch. We were still able to use our 9:10 Fastpasses and by-pass the horrendous line (we even picked up another set of Fastpasses to use later that evening)!
We had read a lot about taking afternoon naps but we never did that. We finished Animal Kingdom and MGM by 2:00 and then jetted over to Universal Studios to take in some of the rides there. Universal lacked the magic as WDW. I also didn't like the fact that they charge you if you want their equivalent of the Fastpass (I believe it's free if you stay at their resorts). Their queue lines were horrible - not much story going on and you enter a lot of different staging rooms. We had afternoon showers that really helped with crowd control.
All in all, we had a great time and definitely created memories that will last a lifetime!
