“Great location for universal plus free fast passes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

The rooms are average size and seemed clean, nothing fancy. The main reason to stay here, location and free fast passes to universal! Parking is close and easy, no reason to valet. (Would even recommend parking here when visiting the parks and not staying at the hotel). Pool and food/drink service closes at 10:00pm. Good customer service from all employees I interacted with. Roll away's are available for $20 a night and can be added to a 2 queen room. Good location for older kids, but "old school", the theme is based on a lot of classic rock. Seemed a little scuzzy but was worth it for the free fast passes and location.

We just spent 3 days at the hotel and I regret to not spend more time with them. Rooms are with lot of space for a family of 4, very clean and amenities are best. Staff are unique, always smiling and willing to provide you the best time ever during your vacation. We stayed over X-mas and was great !!
Next door to Universal parks and give you a vip pass to avoid lines. Great rock everywhre !

Room Tip: Any room !!

Stayed at both the Disney and Universal resorts. I actually was able to enjoy myself as an adult here, versus the Disney resort, where I am about to put a gun to my head. Big thumbs up for slightly older families.

Minor ding was that Disney had free WiFi and Hard Rock didn't.

..This hotel is very expensive for what you get. The only reason we paid nearly $400 a night, was for the included Express passes, (for a family of 4) which were definitely worth it. The Express passes saved us about 5 hours of standing in lines, and also got us early access into the park.

The hotel itelf was pretty average, with the exception of it was very noisy. We choose the Queen Deluxe, (500 sqft) and the room was very spacious for a hotel.. The restaurant was expensive, but the food was pretty good.

The valet parking service was nice. Our rental van reeked of smoke, so we saturated it with Fabreeze. When I handed the keeps to the parking attendant, he offered to leave the van near the hotel lobby with the windows open, in order to air out for awhile.

The water taxis were nice, but if you chose to walk, Islands of Adventure was only about a 10 minute walk.

If I planned to go to Universal Studios again, and needed the Express passes, I would probably choose the Portofino Bay, since from the reviews, it seems that it is a quieter hotel.

Couldn't decide if i should rate this 5 stars or 1 star..and ended up with a 2 star vote.
..Whilst we had a fabulous room, and it's a great hotel in a great location, with great rock memorabilia and a cool pool area and gym, and every photo you see on Tripadvisor is accurate,... we had approx $300 dollars stolen from the room and my wife's VISA debit card stolen. We were in room 7127.
We hadn't used the in-room safe because it was locked shut on arrival and we had no code to open it. Big mistake. i should have complained there and then !
I hid money inside a cardboard folder inside a plastic packet under a load of clothes in the back of a chest of drawers. On second or third day the money was stolen. Passports and my own credit card were left untouched in the same folder. . My wife's purse was taken out of her handbag which was hidden in another part of the room, so we lost £50 sterling cash and her debit card.
Someone had looked carefully through all our stuff to find these items. We rang the bank instantly and were told that the VISA debit card had been used 7 times in local petrol stations and 7-11's for a series of minor purchases, within a few hours of being taken from our room.
We reported it to Troy (hotel security) and Chad (head of security). They said they'd do an internal investigation and speak to staff. . . said they'd arrange for our room to be cleaned only by the manager from now on....
in fact our usual cleaner continued to attend daily and she said she knew nothing about it, and no one came to fix our faulty safe.
Trouble is, so many people are in and out of your room during the day, Cleaners come in at various times, an engineer came to change remote control batteries, a mini-bar stock-up man comes daily, a turn down service comes at night....
The learning for us is... we would stay at this hotel again but we would not leave any valuables at all in our room, we would lock it in the car, in a safety deposit box or something more secure, The room safes are really small anyway,

So... it would have been 5 stars,,, BUT.. if you can't leave things in your room whilst nipping out for a few hours, it's no good at all is it..and so maybe it is a 1 star after all.

I've never had this trouble ever before, as my other 40+ reviews will show.
Enjoy your stay but please take my advice.

We spent Thanksgiving Day at Universal Studis and walked over to The Hard Rock Hotel for dinner. We ate out on the patio, and enjoyed an absolutely wonderful buffet dinner. The food was delicious. There was never a wait at any food station. The place was full without being "packed". The waitstaff was pleasant, and the setting was perfect for our family. We rode a water taxi back to our parking area. Cinderella ending to a perfect Thanksgiving Day.
