“Magical as always”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

This was our third visit to the Grand and our third time concierge level in the Sugar Loaf building. Our room was a renovated one and it was the first time we got to experience the Magic Bands. It was as magical as always from the service of the staff, the cleaning, the food in the Sugar Loaf building etc. Our room was beautiful and we truly enjoyed the orchestra in the lobby each evening.

In the last 14 years this has been our eight full week visit to the World, so what we didn't like was the first question we got when we arrived at the Grand and were greeted by our our personal concierge: have you been with us before? Shame on Disney Parks & Resorts and learn from your sister Disney Cruise Line that does have a system with their Castaway Cay club that recognizes returning and loyal guests.

After a week in the Grand we continued our trip to San Juan for a Southern Caribbean Cruise with the Disney Magic!

For years I have been going to the Grand Floridian Hotel at Disney World. In my personal opinion, it is the very best hotel in the Disney World Resort Area.
I usually stay in a Executive Room, at the Sugar Loaf building.
The rooms are nice, the maid service is great and , of course, they have the advantage of serving a really good continental breakfast, which even includes Nespresso Coffee, plus various snacks all day long. If you travel with children this becomes very importante because they can stop at the dining place and eat whenever they feel like it. In the evening they serve a very good pastry together with wines, brandys, liqueurs of the very best brands.
An additional advantage is Citrico's Restaurant which I consider the best restaurant in all the Disney World facilities. Not to mention a very nice coffee shop opened all day long. They have two lovely swimming pools, one for adults and the other for children. The maintenance is perfect and the in-house concierge is quite helpful with reservations, etc.An added attraction is the jazz orchestra and pianist that play daily in the main lobby. If you can afford it, I strongly reccomend the Grand Floridian.

Room Tip: Stay at the Sugar Loaf Building

We first visited when my daughter was 3; she is now 30. Everything has remained well preserved. From the cast members and employees to the delicious food to the impeccably appointed rooms to the main lobby with its orchestra and pianist---all combine to create an experience that is certainly expensive but surely worth it. We continue to marvel at the beauty and grace this hotel exudes, and I would recommend it to anyone. "Simply the best," to quote Tina Turner!

Room Tip: Ask for any room facing the pool.

Perfect room, view of the marina. Fireworks visible from porch. Great room service. We were here for an annual conference, our first at Disney. Flowers, beauty everywhere. Even found a box fan for noise in my room! Disney cast outstanding. All promises kept.

Beautiful property and grounds. Convenient on the monorail stop. Looks like rooms have recently been updated. Stayed in the concierge level building and the service, food, snacks was wonderful. It truly amazes me the level of service Disney provides. A notch above any other hotel I have stayed at. Lots of families (haven't seen this many little princesses in one place before) so be prepared for strollers and little people. Rated good/ not great as it would be nice to also have more options for adults. The one small lounge/ bar seems outdated and has no character.

I loved staying there because of the facility of taking the boat from magic kingdom to the hotel, or the monorail, the rooms were clean and comfortable. When you are with kids you want a kid friendly place. For staying all adults, I think there are more interesting choices around.

The GF was chosen over the Four Seasons because of its being on the monorail and having a club level lounge. (Big mistake).

We had a party of 8 with 3 club / concierge -level rooms in the Main building, one on the 3rd floor & two on the 2nd. Our room was #4301 and was supposed to have a "park view" for the fireworks, as would the rooms through 4309. However, our view was almost entirely obstructed by palm trees. Our family members on the 2nd floor had slightly better views, and it became a running joke to "watch the fireworks" each night. Note: If noise at 10pm is going to ruin sleep for you or your kids, avoid these rooms.

We stayed over the long Presidents Day weekend, when the hotel was at 100% occupancy & the parks were wall-to-wall crowds. As such, pre-booking dinner reservations was a necessity. When we needed to make changes with the Club concierge, they were unable to help because the computer systems (including Fast Pass at the park & via the app) were down, and the staff at the restaurants were not answering phones. The outage was frustrating all day long, and it apparently happens with enough frequency that the concierges were not surprised. It didn't keep one of them from complaining to me ad nauseum, though. Unexpectedly for all of us, all but one of the concierge team were less than friendly and assisted us only begrudgingly. Forget about being actively greeted & having your needs anticipated! It was not acceptable, and came as a shock to us. If you are accustomed to typical club / concierge level service, you will be thoroughly disappointed. For that matter, if you're used to a lobby-based concierge being happy to go out of their way for you, you have a headache coming to you after you've banged it on their desk!

The room itself was at the level of a recently-updated Holiday Inn, which is fine if that's what you're expecting and paying for. The renovations a couple years ago were cosmetic and didn't address the poor bathroom quality: plastic showerhead; peeling paint; light that automatically turns on a very noisy, dusty-bunny-spewing vent; RED heat lamp that makes for a horror movie feel; round toilet bowl/seat from the '70s that feels so small compared to modern versions... The beds thankfully no longer have those germ-farm decorative bedspreads that are pictured on their website, and the bedding is what you find at a good HI or a Mariott. Not bad, but not Frette.

The room had a small fridge that we could use to keep cool the bottles of water or beer that we got from the lounge. (We needed to ask the attendants for water, as only soda & beer were stocked in the lounge refrigerators). That was nice to have, as opposed to the usual mini-bottle-stocked type. The TV was fine, though the technology was such that no "guide" was available to click through quickly, leaving you to watch a slow, scrolling program list. Having a LodgeNet or similar setup that can be controlled via smartphone would have been welcome. The rooms are very permeable to hallway noise, be it from other guests or from staff & their radios.

The hallways showed the housekeeping situation clearly. At check-in (at the room, via a staffer's iPad), there was a pile of crumbs next to our door; they stayed there until the next evening. In a service nook, some dirty service items stayed in clear view of anyone walking to their room for more than a day. Piles of dirty plates and glasses were left outside rooms for hours at a time while rooms were made up. A gross sight that shouldn't happen at "Disney's finest resort." Rooms often aren't serviced until after Noon, so don't plan on returning for an afternoon nap if you want your room cleaned. And what was with the wood-smoke stench that permeated the hall?!

The pools were nice, and kids seemed to really enjoy the water slide. So did some parents! Rebecca at the pool bar was patient & friendly while we took forever to decide on 6 gin-tonics.

The only on-property restaurant we went to was the 24hr Gasparilla Island Grill, a quick-service place that makes your food to order. Alix the cashier was probably the sunniest person we saw the whole trip. Very good experience there.

I think the biggest bummer of the stay was the general tone of service, which made a good hotel seem just ok. Expect to wait 20+ minutes for towels to be delivered (couldn't have our room made because our daughter took a 2pm snooze one day). Don't expect staff to actively greet you in the hallways, or to give you right-of-way. Many (not a couple lovely ladies in the mornings) of the lounge attendants are more interested in talking with other staff than refreshing the food & beverage displays so guests don't have to ask. ***Kellie, the lady who checked us in, was very nice, though there were some technical difficulties at first that were beyond her control and that she handled with aplomb. She knew that we were meeting up with family, and offered to bring our functioning Magic Bands to us in the lounge so we didn't have to wait.

With regards to the two main factors in our foregoing Four Seasons for the GF:

1. MONORAIL. Being able to access the monorail from the 2nd floor was convenient for going to Magic Kingdom, but we preferred to take the quick water taxi back to avoid a 20min loop through other properties. The only other park the monorail takes you to is Epcot, and that involves a transfer. We elected to take taxis: $15 to Epcot, $20 to Animal Kingdom, $16 to Four Seasons (We had dinner at their rooftop restaurant Capa). We also chose car service over the Magic Bus so we could expedite our airport trips.

2. CLUB LEVEL. A club lounge is normally a convenient place for people in multiple rooms to get together at various times to have a nibble, grab a coffee, and talk. But with the GF main building's lobby being packed with guests of the hotel & restaurants and also people there just to hang out & take photos, it was most welcome on this trip! The 3 generations were able to relax and hear each other speak, which would have been impossible in the lobby. The food spread was nice, though we had hoped the hot breakfast options would consist of more than oatmeal. The evening desserts were a hit, so even though we had desserts included as part of our meal plan dinners, we opted to skip them. Note: I was told by a concierge that Club guests typically don't fully utilize meal plans because of the food in the lounge, and we also found it to be a waste of $ because we don't eat desserts at every meal and preferred to dine off-property one night for a break from Disneymania.

At the end of the trip, we decided that the only way we'd return to Disney World is if we stayed at the FS...and steered clear of the GF lobby spectacle.
