Having traveled to Disney about once a year for the past ten years and having always stayed at Disney properties (contemporary, animal kingdom, port orleans, boardwalk villas) I was really excited to stay at what I had always assumed was Disney's premier hotel.
From the moment I walked in, I was disappointed. The lobby was lovely but did not have the Disney wow factor that my kids love (nothing Disney, childfriendly going on). The atmosphere was boring and dull with the band playing only sporatically and the bars dead.
The room was not in the main hotel and was quite a walk away. Average hampton inn style room with pleasant view. The pool was under construction. The kid camp was depressing and not well staffed. The game room and cafeteria were small, dingy and actually the worse I have ever seen on a disney property. The breakfast in the buffet was cafeteria quality in both atmosphere and food and in the main restaurant a total rip off and again very institutional tasting.
What was most shocking was how poorly trained the staff was. I had an important dinner booked at Animal Kindgom Lodge. I called concierge TWICE to confirm how to get there and I was told NOT to take monorail to Magic Kingdom then bus to Animal Kingdom Lodge a I thought but to take monorail to transportaion center. When I got to transportaiton center I was told no busses to the lodge only to the resort. ugh. I had to get back on monorail and go all around again. The mistake cost me forty minutes and I missed my meal.
Also, DESPITE PAYING ALMOST 400 A NIGHT NO CABLE OR MOVIE CHANNELS. When I called to complain, they told me, and this is a quote, Disney wants you out enjoying disney amenities NOT watching tv. When I explained that it was 10:00 at night, I just drove for five hours, and I had two infant children, they didn't know how to respond. Apparently, the lack of a cable package is a common complaint because at my business meeting the next day I heard others venting similar frustration. (NOTE to Disney, if you are going to bill this as an adult friendly, business orientated hotel, you need to have cable)
Finally, I think it is outrageious to spend 400 a night and not be able to book a dinner reservation in your hotel at any time for any night of your stay!
The spa: outrageous prices, mediocre services
In sum, not inspiring, not luxury, not fun for the kids, showing its age, a big disappointment. Not a good hotel for adults either because you can't even relax after a big meeting and watch a movie if you so desire.
