“Pool Refurb Complete”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2007

I'm surprised to read that some guests had not been informed about the pool work. We were told months ago and given options to change. We stuck with our original booking as our previous experience of this resort has been "Magical".

The resort is wonderfully themed as a National Park Lodge and the main lobby is often descibed as an attraction in itself. The Wilderness lodge is one of the most revisited Disney resorts and having visited 6 times now I'm hooked.

Our family just returned from our Spring Break in Disney. We usually stay in one of the 'Value Resorts' but this year, as Florida residents, and pass holders we were able to get a fantastic room rate. So we splurged!
Our room was spacious, and the beds were very comfortable. The Health Club was well equipped. The pool area was our favorite. There was one bartender at the pool bar that went above and beyond. Her pool side cocktails were the best!
Ask for Johanna if you can!
The only 'problems' I could write about would be the funny smell in the halls. I could never identify it, it wasn't bad, just funny.
The hotel has 2 sit down restaurants, and 1 'food court'.
The food in the restaurant was just ok, and it was pricey. For what we paid, the food should have been better. The atmosphere was great, especially in the Whispering Canyon Cafe. Our kids had a blast. Their food court offered quick food for families trying to get to the theme parks. They need a little more variety, after a while the chicken strips, cheese burgers, and pizzas were tiresome.
They should also have more than 2 cashiers working at a time. Sometimes the lines at the registers were longer than the rides in the parks!
Transportation from a 'Deluxe' resort is considerably better than at a 'value' resort. The boats to the Magic Kingom were timely, and the walks to the bus stop in the parks were considerably shorter, and the buses came more frequent. I guess you truly do get what you pay for when it comes to convienence.
Overall we loved our stay, and can't wait to go back.

We were at Disney in March and were disappointed to arrive at the Wilderness Lodge to find the main pool closed for "refurbishment." The source of our angst was that at no time during my frequent communications with both central Disney reservations and Wilderness Lodge directly was this fact mentioned. For our family with young kids, the pool was a major reason for choosing this hotel and not to be informed was infuriating. However, upon request, the helpful manager found us accomodation at Animal Kingdom Lodge for most of our stay (which was lovely). We did have to return to WL for part of our stay and found the property to be lovely too, but the absence of the feature pool is a significant thing. Overall our stay was great but I would caution future guests to be very specific in asking what amenities are working at any given facility.

My boyfriend and I stayed there the first week of March and had a great time.

Check-in was fine and quick, the guy was polite and competent. Our room was nice and spacious- I did see the odd sinks (not in my room though) and there are really odd!! So ask for a room with a king size bed; the sink is different.

The pool is really nice and we even had ducks coming to our door every afternoon!! Talk about wilderness.... !! The bus service was super efficient and convenient. The boat was nice and quick too we were so close to Magic Kingdom!!

I highly recommend staying on property. You get the full Disney experience and the convenience and customer service is just amazing.

For those who said the halls are looong; I say yes. But there are many ways to get to one destinations; you just need to find out the best way.

  • Liked — the convenience and beauty of the property
  • Disliked — the fake king size bed (two single beds!!)

Just returned from our 2nd stay in the Villas at the Wilderness Lodge (3/10 -- /3/15). This is a great place for families. My kids love the "Lincoln Log" look of the place, the stream flowing through the lobby, etc. It was completely booked with families on spring break while we were there, but it never seemed too crazy or overrun with people. We had a family group of 5 and stayed in a 2-bedroom villa. This was plenty of space for all of us. Master bedroom has a nice 2-person whirlpool tub. Please note (we found this out just the day before our stay!) that the main pool will be closed through the end of March. The smaller pool is still open; we enjoyed it, but it was pretty crowded. Drinks are still available at the main pool's little bar, but you have to walk over and fetch stuff and bring it back.

In terms of the Disney transportation system from the Wilderness Lodge, a few things:
1. Magical Express worked great for us -- no complaints or glitches.
2. The ferries to Magic Kingdom and the other resorts took a long time. Allow yourself plenty of time to get places ! Including waiting time, it took us 30 minutes to get to the Contemporary Resort for dinner one night, and it's right next door and the ferry's first stop.
3. With the buses to the other parks (Epcot, Animal Kingdom, etc.) -- again, allow yourself plenty of time! We got there, but it always took us longer than we thought!

My husband and I had a drink in the Territory Lounge one night -- pretty mellow, nice selection of single malt Scotches (according to my husband). We used the food court for breakfast -- they have some healthier options available, which was nice (cereal, fruit, skim milk, bagels). My kids went the pancakes & bacon route and enjoyed that, also. There's a few tables outside where we loved eating every morning (newspapers, including the NY Times, are available in the gift shop). I've eaten at the other moderate restaurant in the hotel (not Artist Point, the very nice restaurant), and let's just say that I chose not to return on this trip.

Room was always very clean, plenty of towels & nice h20 plus toiletires, and always made up pretty early in the day. With all the kids and people, it was still quiet enough that I slept great every night.

All in all, I find this hotel to be a nice retreat from a lot of the Disney hustle and bustle, with enough Disney theming present so that my kids enjoy it.

Stayed in a 2 bedroom villa with another family. Altogether there were 4 adults and 4 children, ages infant-4 years. The Wilderness Lodge & villas are perfect for families with young children. The Lodge lobby has a stream running through it with a footbridge over the stream. Our 2 year old's favorite part of the vacation, by far, was running back and forth over this bridge. If you have kids and want a little privacy the villa set up is key. Nothing like having a door that closes between 2 sleeping areas...kid(s)can nap in one room and life can go on for the rest of the family. The villas are very quiet, as well. We never heard room noise from our neighbors or even the other family when the room's internal doors were closed. Iv'e stayed in rooms right off the lobby at the Wilderness Lodge proper, and the lobby noise is impressive and will wake up all but the heaviest sleeper starting as early as 0630! Not cool at the time, as I was on a romantic getaway with husband only.

It's very nice at the villas to have a full kitchen to store milk, juice etc... or just do a night of Kraft mac-n-cheese. Also utilized room service on several ocassions which was prompt and professional. As always, room service is expensive, but the cost was worth the convenience of not having to convince 3 toddlers to behave for one more sit down meal.

A one bedroom villa is perfect for a family of 4 if you have 2 children willing to share a queen sleeper sofa. A one-bedroom villa is significantly less expensive than 2 adjoining rooms at the lodge with more space and more amenities.

Bad things? "magical express" luggage arrived well after 1 am--although this was within 3 hours, as we had arrived in our room about 11pm. Had to call THREE times to have crib delivered despite requesting in advance and confirming request by phone on the day prior to my arrival. It also took some doing to split the hotel bill (down the middle) between the 2 families' credit cards, but it was worked out before we left.

All, in all, a perfect resort for families with young children. Reserve it, with as much square footage as you can afford. You won't be sorry...but if you're on your honeymoon, ask for a room well away from the lobby noise.

Just got back from 3 nights at the Wilderness Lodge (03/01/07-03/04/07). Everything about the resort was great. Rooms have recently been refurbished and are tastefully done. Flat screen TVs in all the rooms, just like the Contemporary and Polynesian. I was undecided beforehand if the Wilderness Lodge would match up but it exceeded my expectations and I ended up liking it better than the other two hotels. Both the Contemporary and Polynesian have had the rooms redone also, but the Wilderness Lodge seems nicer in the common areas (lobby, hallways, etc). Transportation was also good, with a boat to the Magic Kingdom (about 5 minutes) and regular buses to the other parks/Downtown Disney. I never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a bus. All of the staff were very nice and helpful (lobby desk, housekeeping, room service, etc). Overall I was impressed and will stay their again in the future.
