“Better than expected”

I was disappointed at not getting Jambo when we booked this. Now I would always choose this, the pools were lovely and the children loved the splash area, my hubby also liked the parking as it was under hotel.
Rooms seem bigger and we liked the 2nd bathroom.
So once you get over the lobby not being as impressive as Jamob I am sure you will love it.

After not being able to get Jambo we booked Kidani, on first arriving I thought the lobby not any where near as impressive as Jambo.
Then after the first day driving to the under hotel parking area it started to grow on us
The lift up to room or lobby was much better than trecking from a car park.
The pool was better as warmer and had a nice splash area for children.
The food here does lack counter service but the bar snacks were okay, then in the evening the bar inside served lovely bites and the cocktails wow...

Room Tip: Savannah view is not really needed as plenty of animals can be seen from other areas, although I did...

We have stayed at this hotel many times since it opened in 2009 most recently in June, 2014. We belong to DVC, and this is our home resort. The rooms are dark, in order to reduce light pollution for the animals. It is a wonderful trade off to wake up to see animals outside the room. There are two savannahs at Kidani, the Sunset, which has giraffes and zebras, and Pembe, which has various antelope and okapi. My favorite thing to do at AKV is to sit out on the balcony first thing in the morning to enjoy my breakfast watching animals. The hallways are long, but the end rooms are blissfully quiet. Parking for the hotel is under the hotel, so, it is usually not a long distance to your car, no matter where the room is. I have spent entire trips without going to the lobby, when we were in an end room, so, sometimes the amenities like refillable mugs are not useful, since the refill station is in the giftshop in the lobby. Our most recent visit, our room was near the elevator which was close to Sanaa, a very unique restaurant at Kidani.

Room Tip: avoid odd numbered savannah view rooms if you want to see zebras and giraffes

This hotel is fantastic! The windows throughout the hotel had awesome views of the animals walking around the property. They had night vision goggles available for night time viewing. The one bedroom villa was very roomy. It had a nice sized balcony which ran from the living area to the bedroom. A pull out couch which was actually fairly comfortable, a pull out chair and a very comfortable king sized bed. There were two full sized bathrooms (the one in the bedroom could have fit another bed in it), one with a large jacuzzi tub and separate large shower. There was a kitchen with full sized refrigerator/freezer and a washer and dryer. There was a sit-down style restaurant in the hotel with a bar but the menu would not be good for picky eaters. The quick service restaurant at the main lodge (Jambo House) had a decent selection and decent food. This was a quick walk down a lighted path (maybe 5 minutes). The other great thing about staying at Kidani was that the bus stopped here first for pick up and drop off and the two Animal Kingdom properties were the only stop for that bus. The people that worked here were very friendly and helpful. I would request a room near the lobby as we did because it could be a very far walk if you are located in one of the rooms at the ends. Also, next time I would probably get a Savanna view room (we had a standard) My only complaint would be that it is about a 15-20 ride to Magic Kingdom.

Room Tip: Request a room near the lobby.

I'll start this review by mentioning that we are Disney Vacation Club members and that Animal Kingdom Lodge is our "home" resort. This, however, was our first stay at this location! We chose to stay in a standard view studio because my husband and I do not spend any extra time (beyond sleeping) in our room so we didn't want to spend the extra "points" to stay in a savannah view room. We staying on the "third" floor which is really the second floor because the basement is a no access/cast member area and we were the first room off the elevator. This is a great thing in this hotel because the hallways are LONG (to allow for more savannah view rooms!) and since the "view" wasn't a focus for us it was perfect (especially after long days walking around the parks). I could see how the walk time might be difficult for families if they were further down these halls. This also kept us close to the front desk since it was a short distance from the elevators making our access to it easier. Kudos to Disney for creating a hotel that had minimal elevator/crowd noise! We were never overwhelmed with noise at any point during our stay. This is a great resort if you like a quieter retreat. Since we didn't stay in a savannah view room, we took advantage of some of the viewing areas which still allowed us to enjoy the animals. One thing we didn't do that the resort offers at night are night vision viewers! This allowed guests to enjoy the animals as late as 9:30pm in the dark. The resort is well themed and decorated with African art throughout every hall. As far as the Disney theme, the rooms have a Lion King flair! Our room only had the Lion King characters in the window sheers and the "hidden Mickey" leopard carpeting, but the larger villas have Lion King accent tiles in the shower, a Simba/Nala carving bed, and other little touches.

Pros:
Quiet, well themed, scenic, and this is the first pickup location for the Disney buses at AKL so we didn't have to wait long for buses.

Cons:
Proximity to the parks (it took about 20-30 minutes by bus to get to the Magic Kingdom), dimly lit (to help with the ambiance), and there isn't a lot of shopping or dining options at this location (you have to travel over to Jambo House)

Some of the "cons" can also be "pros" depending on how you look at them. The long bus ride back to the hotel can be good if you get a seat and want to rest and you can do a lot of walking in very scenic areas by staying on resort.

Thankfully we only had one tiny issue on this trip, we arrived around 8pm and were told that it could take up to 3 hours for our luggage (we used the Magical Express bus service from the airport) and when we returned to our room at 1am our luggage hadn't been brought up. We called the front desk and they brought it up right away. Tiny issue in my mind, but it was worth mentioning.

Would we stay here again? Absolutely! Not just because its our "home" resort, but because we feel like we have so much left to explore. For us the proximity wasn't a huge issue. If we had kids, it might have been a different story. On the other hand, having the animals on the savannah make it a cool resort for "kids" of any age!

Room Tip: If you do not want to walk more, ask for a room near the elevators. The hotel halls are long and do...

We stayed here for three nights and had a Savannah View 1 bedroom. Family of mom, dad, daughter 22 and son 11.
We asked for a room on the 2nd floor. We were given room 7228 (I believe), we had the best location. We had a giraffe feeding box right outside our balcony and three bushes where the other animals liked to eat from and play in.
We especially loved the giraffes, zebra, Thompson Gazelles, Ankoli Cattle.
I love staying at the lodge and Kidani, but I always find the rooms to be dark. I know this is the theming, so I can work with it, but I would like to see more ample lighting for when it is needed.
Our room was spacious for us. Daughter stayed on the pull out sofa and said it was ok for comfort. Son stayed in the pull out arm chair and said it was really comfortable (he asked if he could get one for his bedroom at home) and we had a king bed in the master bedroom. Our main bathroom was the highlight of the room...kids loved trying out the huge Jacuzzi tub, ok, I LOVED it too!!
We used the pool a few times and it was nice. We all took a turn on the water slide and this was fun and seems to last for an ok amount of time. The hot tubs were very good as well.
Tips:
1) ask for a room close to an elevator, near lobby. This resort is VERY LONG, and it would be an extremely long walk at the end of the day to get to your room.
2) ask for the second floor, this will bring you a little closer to the eye level of the giraffes.

This was our first stay in a DVC property since becoming members last year. The hotel, the room, the grounds were fantastic. We had a great experience and highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Disney.
