“A special place on the Kinabatangan River”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2010

Our group of 3 couples stayed at the Myne Resort for 1 night at the beginning of May. We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay and loved the river cruises, looking for various wildlife. This part of the Kinabantangan River was very quiet and peaceful and we had a wonderful view from our chalet. All meals were included in the tariff and were very tasty and enjoyable. We had arranged our visit with Megah Travel Services in Sandakan and can recommend their professional and well priced service in arranging this leg of our trip. Thanks to Patrick (our tour guide) for his great knowledge of all things Sabah, including his wildlife 'spotting' along the banks of the river. We were the only guests staying at the resort, which made the experience even more special. The staff are genuinely warm and gratious. This part of our trip was a wonderful highlight.

Our family of five stayed at the Myne Resort for 3 nights end April. In total we spent 35 days in Borneo and the three nights at the Myne were the best of the entire trip. Here's why:

We were picked up from Sandakan in an airconditioned bus and taken to Gomantong Caves on the way to the Resort. The guide was absolutely fantastic; he knew the area well and provided us with exceptional information on the caves, Kinabatangan and surrounding area.
The resort staff were warm and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us during our stay
The food was absolutely fabulous; fresh, plentiful and of very good quality. We were told they have recently employed an Executive Chef to manage the hotel which shows as the food was great.
Our rooms were gorgeous. Several varieties of different wood have been used to decorate the rooms and the chalets sit harmoniously in the jungle.
The view of the Kinabatangan from our balcony was stunning.
The staff were brilliant; extremely accommodating and professional. After a few days our 7 yr old decided she didn't want to get up for an early morning river trip and the owners niece (who works at the resort) asked if she could look after her. They developed a wonderful relationship.
Drinks at the bar were reasonably priced compared to other resorts in Borneo.
The river trips were absolutely fantastic, magical and professionally run. We saw a male orangutan on Oxbow lake, crocodiles, monitor lizards, probiscus monkeys, macaques and many many other animals and birds.
My parents (in their 60's) came with us and also had a fantastic time.
The rooms are airconditioned and well maintained.
The staff took my husband on a guided trek at no extra cost, and several other activities were also thrown in for free. Having just come from Danum Valley where everything was an additional cost, it was a wonderful surprise.

All in all one of the best places we have stayed in all of south east asia. A fabulous place to stay for 2 or 3 nights. When not eating, drinking or taking the river cruises we played pool and table tennis, darts, played on the soccer table or used the games from the gaming room. There are also trails for the more adventurous.

An absolute delight and we all loved it.

Stayed at the Myne resort for 3 nights after doing a lot of research online. We just happened to pick a week between holidays and had the entire place to ourselves. From the moment we were picked up by Patrick for the two and a half hour drive we had a really pleasant experience. The staff were exceptional - especially Cynthia who organised a few extra activities for us in case we were bored and William the manager who catered for our every need.
We booked an extra river excursion each day as every time we went out it was different - sometimes getting within inches of the wildlife. Take along a pair of binoculars to heighten the experience.
The food was excellent and some of the best we had on our two weeks in Sabah.
The chalets are very comfortable and private with balconies and views of the river.
I was worried that the noise of airconditioners would drown out the sound of the forest - but they are very quiet and there are ceiling fans if you prefer them.
We checked out some of the other lodges on the river and this is by far the most luxurious yet is very reasonably priced.
What really surprised me was the free high speed WiFi available which enabled my wife to complete 3 Uni assignments in the middle of the Borneo jungle !
On the way back to Sandakan we arranged for Patrick to take us to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where he waited for us for a few hours while we visited.

Myne Resort
4/3-4/5

My husband and I stayed in this new resort in Bilit for three wonderful days. We were impressed by the attentive and personal attention we received. The food was fantastic. The chalets were clean, spacious, with air-conditioning, hardwood floors, in-room safes, and a large king size bed. We felt very safe and well taken care of. The boat guides were amazing--they could immediately spot wildlife from a great distance. We had a fabulous time and would highly recommend this resort to anyone else who is interested in a wildnerness adventure in Borneo in a quiet and friendly resort. The only thing that I would warn about is that there are a lot of stairs, which isn't a problem for us, but if it might be for you, you might want to ask for a lower chalet. Also, there can be large (though harmless) insects such as moths and beetles in the dining area as well as the public restrooms. If there was a way to prevent those bugs from being there, this place would be perfect. Still, I would highly recommend this place and definitely would stay there again! It's a great place to relax (we spent a lot of time reading during the day) and the river cruises are fantastic!!!

This is a new place, well located on a big bend in the river. The hotel manager is a great guy, with a true apprecation of service and willing to go out of his way to make sure you have a good stay. At no extra cost, he put on a special long boat trip down the river for us to try and see a herd of 80 pigmy elephants that had been recently seen.

There are a number of lodges to choose from along the Kinabantangan River in Sabah, Borneo near Sukau, and we had the good fortune of landing at the Myne Resort. The lodge is located at the end of an 8 km dirt road, which meanders through a palm plantation and a small village or two. The lodge itself is on the River bank, and is an excellent embarkation point for discovering the wildlife in this fascinating reserve area.
The lodge itself offers cabin accommodation, equipped with aircon, hot showers, and comfortable beds. A sojourn at the lodge typically will include 3 meals per day, all of which were very good. The food served was by and large Chinese style, with a good selection of tastes and ingredients (meat, fish, veggies...). The employees and management of the place are extremely friendly, always smiling, and very eager to please.
From the resort, one visits the river environment by longboat, and you can hire your own boat and guide, or do this with other tourists, which can be somewhat limiting. There is alot going on along the shores of the Kinabantangan....proboscis monkeys, macaques, orangutans in the wild, pygmy elephants, an incredible diversity of birds (all sorts of hornbills, eagles...), crocodiles, snakes, wild pigs....this is a river safari, so in order to see the wildlife you need some patience and the energy to get up at dawn. We stayed 3 nights, and were a bit worried whether there would enough to see....and on the third day we finally got to see the pygmy elephants, so the extra day paid off! We also did a "night safari", which essentially meant that we were in the back of a pick-up truck rolling with flashlights - we saw a 10 m python crossing the piste, and a number of civet cats lurking in the shadows.
In order to have a great time at the Myne, manage your expectations! The Kinabantangan is relatively removed from the mainstream, and the "resort" is essentially a place to eat, shower, and sleep. There is nothing to do there - perhaps if the mgmt introduced televisions or dvd players in the rooms, it would be a bit more entertaining. Maybe a karaoke machine in the central dining area?? While the resort falls short in terms of diversions once the boat trips are finished, the management does compensate in terms of their friendliness.
