“Amazing wildlife”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

Spent 2 nights at Myne resort last month with our 2 children. The location right on the river, in Bilit, is great, and worth the slightly uncomfortable trip down a gravel road. The staff were friendly and helpful, food was nice and rooms were comfortable. However, the highlight was the river cruising looking for wildlife. On our first cruise, we saw orangutans, proboscis and other monkeys, hornbills, and about 30 elephants. We found the elephants bathing in the river towards the end of our cruise, and although we were due back at 6 pm, our guide let us stay an extra half hour just to watch them.

Next morning, we had our second cruise and came across another herd of elephants, including a mother and baby, very cute.

That night, our last cruise and we were fortunnate to see a family of proboscis monkeys crossing a high rope across the river.

Our guide was very knowledgable and observant, he managed to spot crocodiles, a snake, monitor lizards and lots more. I would highly recommend a stay at Myne, ideally 3 nights. Take a book though as there is not much else to do and although we did a couple of cforest walks, it was stifling, and we did not see much on either walk.

No noise from renovations as others have mentioned, we did not notice them.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2012

I travelled to the Kinabatangan River in in early June 2012 on a trip arranged by Downbelow (See review at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g298307-d1157034-r131717830-Downbelow_Marine_Wildlife_Adventures-Kota_Kinabalu_Kota_Kinabalu_District_Sabah.html#REVIEWS ).
I stayed at the Myne Resort at Kg Bilit for 2 nights. The resort is a relatively new addition to accommodation in the area.
The resort is in a great location on the edge river, overlooking a natural regrowth jungle environment on the edge of part of the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.
The whole resort has a very rustic atmosphere but is very well set up and comfortable.
The lobby, includes a check in area, a small bar and the restaurant. It is open with an outside deck and views over the river. There is access to the jetty and to the chalet
I had chalet 10, the nearest to the lobby. On the first night I was the only guest, after a large group checked out soon after my arrival. There was only ever a maximum of 7 guests. As a result service was excellent and I suspect it would always be very good.
The chalet was large with a king bed, desk facilities, a large flat screen TV (which I did not use) and a basic bathroom with wash basin, shower and toilet. Towels were reasonable but no face washers (towels) were provided. The was no hot water supply at the basin and a localized hot water service for the shower with only warm water. This was not a problem as far as a shower was concerned, as the weather was warm. However if men want to have a shave using a blade razor, you will have to boil the kettle to get water that is hot enough. There was no plug in the basin. As I was there only 2 nights, I did not bother shaving.
The room was air-conditioned and also had a ceiling fan. A room fridge was not provided. There was a balcony, off the bed room, overlooking the river.
The meals were on a fixed menu but were excellent with plenty of variety and more than enough to eat. The Croc Bar had a limited supply of soft drinks, beer and spirits. Only one type of red wine was provided and no while wine.
River trips, from the resort were from the jetty at the resort in their own boats which were comfortable and modern. The boatman I used was excellent. The package I arranged included two evening trips and two morning trips.
Considering the location and the environment the resort was very good.
The only real problem with the resort is that is in no way either senior or disabled friendly. All the chalets are staggered up a hill with a lot of steep stairs to climb for access. Management need to realise that, certainly in the case of Australians, a lot seniors are travelers with good disposable income. An improvement in access would be beneficial.
Whatever you do, if you get an opportunity to visit the Kinabatangan River, don’t miss it. The wild life experience is incredible. You will see a lot of proboscis and other monkeys plus a lot of bird life and a wonderful environment. My whole trip was worth while just for the experience of seeing a herd of Pygmy Elephants in the wild.
A final comment that has nothing to do with the Myne Resort other than I was staying there when I visited two facilities operated by the Sabah Wildlife Department. These were the Gomantong Caves and their station on the Kinabatangan River at Sukau. The public toilets at both of these locations are disgusting and unusable. The ones at the caves were the worst I have ever seen in my many years of travelling. If they want to attract tourists they need to fix this now.

Room Tip: If you don't like climbing steep stairs make sure you get a room close to the lobby

The lodging at the Myne Resort can only be described as “adequate.” The real reason you are travelling to Sandakan and to this river retreat is to get up close and personal with animals and nature.

However, for the prices they charged at this place I do not think you get the full value for the money you are paying. They are pretty expensive for what you get…

Cons: Very basic rooms (chalets), which can be a loooong walk away and up many sets of stairs depending on which one you get. The bathrooms are just horrid. The sheets smelled like mold and mildew. The food they served was weird to be honest. They tried coming up with some western dishes that just ended up tasting pretty bad. We mostly just stuck to the rice and beers, they were safe.

Pros: The location. You are right on the river bend so you can see up and down the river, the views are amazing from the hill behind the resort. Aircon in the rooms. The service was great, the people so friendly. We loved our boat guide…he had one tooth and didn’t speak any English but we were all able to communicate just fine. He pointed out so much wildlife that we had to request to head back to the lodge cause we were tired of seeing so many monkeys, birds and orangutans. The deck facing the river. We sat our here both nights drinking beers and enjoying the sounds of the river flowing and nature surrounding us (that is until kids came down and starting playing on the fooseball table!! Annoying…). Oh, and the wild pigs will most likely come at night while you are there. They are so freakin’ adorable, but spook easily.

The river is just absolutely stunning, and again, this is the only reason you are here. But this lodging and the others in the area didn’t look too great either. There aren’t many places to stay in this location, so they may have a monopoly on the pricing. As soon as you get more resorts building, the prices will become more competitive. I wouldn’t ever want to stay in a place like this again otherwise, it was good for two nights to put our heads down and really enjoy the wildlife of Borneo along the river.

We booked this because accommodation is important to us. We had no real problem with the accommodation and stayed close to the reception as advised by other because of the layout of the chalets. Bathroom facilities average. The one irritant we had was the incessant noise during the day from renovations ( its not as if you can escape it) but this was dealt with very efficiently once we raised it as an issue. The food is a set lunch and dinner with adequate helpings but little variety. They obviously play safe and cook for conservative palates but it was enjoyable enough. We had two afternoon cruises and an evening cruise and saw elephants, orangutan, hordes of monkeys and the most amazing array of beautiful birds. If I was to return to the river I would probably stay somewhere different as I think I expected a little more for the price we paid. The rooms are not that much different to some other less costly accommodation so it is the location we are paying for.

We booked through dive down below for a 3d2n package. Our guide was also Patrick and I would like to reiterate the review of the previous poster, I'll try not to repeat what has already been said. Patrick was excellent and really made our trip, such a genuine person with huge passion and knowledge of his country and it's wildlife. Ask for Patrick, you will have the best time!!
We also found sepilok a bit disappointing. As the orangutans are more or less wild it can sometimes be hit and miss to whether you see any, we were waiting for ages and in the end only two showed for about 5 mins before disappearing back into the forest. The rasa ria is much better for viewing quality.
It is a bit of a depressing drive to the resort - miles and miles of plantations where the jungle used to be. Because of this you never feel truly in the middle of the forest as there is only a tiny amount left around the river :-(
Myne resort is lovely, wouldn't stay anywhere else, location is fab and staff are great, very friendly and attentive- we were the only ones there when we visited, they said we were their VIPs! I would agree about the flies around the food though.
Chalets over looking the river are nice and adequate - thank god for the air con and fan!
Wildlife is excellent. We saw four different types of hornbill, two different types of kingfisher, birds of prey, a herd of Pygmy elephants, primates including proboscis monkeys, crocs, snakes, monitor lizard, wild boar, various insects and a glimpse of a wild big male orangutan. you can opt to do night cruises Or a short trek through the forest.
We also did a city tour of sandakan which was great, although we did stick out like a sore thumb walking round the local market with everyone pointing and following us being the only white European people there!
We had a brilliant time and would love to go back one day. Thanks to Patrick who made our trip special! Take the shot!!!

We had booked a bit of a package with divedownbelow which was really good. We were picked up by our guide and driver Patrick Thomas from Megha Travel who stayed with us until he dropped us back in Sandakan. Our first stop was at the Sepilok Sanctuary which we found diappointing(only 1 mum and bubs showed up). Most of the driveto the lodge is on pretty good roads for Sabah but the last 8kms had to be seen to be believed. It had rained quite heavily as we were driving in and none of us was prepared for the last bit. We parked up and transferred to a 4WD and literally slugged our way through very deep clay like mud at about 1km/hour! the driver did a good job. Apparently this is a cut through as the new bridge that usually connects through on tarmac had failed. I feel sorry for the locals whose ordinary cars are stuck on the wrong side.
Patrick was the absolute highlight-a genuinely nice guy who very obviously loves animals and was extremely good at spotting them. And spot them he did. On our first cruise we saw a herd of about 50 pygmy elephants right on the river bank-amazing sight. The day before there were none and the day after just 3....We also saw macaques, proboscus and hornbills, crocodile. The second day we found a pregnant orang utan who put on a great show for us, then a huge mob of macaques balancing on branches so close they could have gotten into the boat and then to top it all off a lot of proboscus. Every cruise was fantastic. The boat man-Captain Jack Sparrow also did a good job zooming in on sightings.
OK I know this is supposed to be a review on the Myne Lodge but a large part of the reason for being here is the wildlife and most people will be on packages.
The lodge itself is in a lovely location with a large deck fronting onto the river where you eat your meals. We joined with 2 other couples and ate together sharing dishes. These became our cruise buddies-very sociable. The food was very good-hot and freshly cooked. But we were the only guests at the time.
The cabin we had was no.9 -second one up the stairs so not too far to walk but I would reiterate what others have said-if you have mobility problems ask for a cabin that is close to the reception. By the way us and another couple had read about the "karaoke incident" and joked about it while there but we had absolutely no problems(as they had cabin 10!).
The cabin itself was spacious and comfortable with a balcony overlooking the river. The bathroom was adequate. Bottled water was supplied and there were tea and coffee making facilities.
The Resort is family run and we met the owner, his brother, niece etc and all wanted to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The staff were also great. Only one criticism-the staff sit at one end of the deck smoking and talking and we were placed right next to them-not so good. Also LOTS of flies at breakfast/ lunch. Staff had covers for the food but guests didn't.
But would I go back again?-absolutely and I would skip Danum Valley-we saw much more at Bilit.
On the way back to Sandakan Patrick took us to the Gomantong caves which I found quite amazing. Nothing can prepare you for the cockroaches scuttling around on the metres deep bat and bird poo.The walkways are slippery and you dare not put a hand on the rail as it is also covered in the same stuff. Amazing place though. On the way back to the van we were lucky enough to see Red Leaf monkey up close. Then we were taken to a restaurant at which Patrick bought us a series of dishes-local curries. As an aside when we came out we saw Patrick sat with an old man-obviously poor and he put 10 ringitt in his pocket as we left. When I asked about it Patrick did not even know the man but just wanted to help him out. Thats the type of guy he is and I was very impressed.
Then we did a city tour-to the Sandakan Memorial, water village, Buddhist temple and then dropped at our hotel.
The entire package was perfect-we saw everything we wanted to see and more than we expected. A huge thankyou to Patrick for being the perfect host and for all the laughs we had-we will have fond memories of him saying "take the shot" "get the face" etc.Highly recommended trip.

Room Tip: Choose a room close to reception if you have mobility problems

We stayed for 2 nights in early April, it was to be one of the highlights of our holiday. We booked the Borneo part of our trip with Dive Down Below, and Sarah Jane cannot be faulted for the tour she arranged for us. The river trips from Myne Resort were awe-inspiring, we saw lots of primates, including one Orang, and a great many birds, but the best thing was to see pygmy elephants swimming across the river. They had two babies with them and this sight is the kind of thing holiday dreams are made of.
The rooms were clean, bathroom was adequate, food was ok, views from the chalets across the river were great, some fantastic sunsets to photograph. The location is great because it is at the head of the river and you can see down both sides. Communal areas are comfortable and we were lucky enough to see wild pigs outside at night! The birdlife is very good in the area, lots right outside your bedroom window.
As has been said before, there are lots of steps up to the chalets, the further away from the main area, the more steps there are, maybe something to consider if you have any mobility issues.

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues, remember to ask for a room near reception.
