We stayed at the Alling House B+B a couple of weeks ago whilst visiting Blue Springs and some other nearby State Parks.
Initially, we had intended to stay at one of the cabins that are inside the Blue Springs park but on searching Tripadvisor, we came across the Alling House. It also offered cabin type accommodation that seemed much nicer for around the same money.
Eventually we decided to stay at the main house and were very pleasantly surprised. The house is a 'mock Victorian' type of place and is beautifully decorated and furnished inside. On our arrival we were shown around by Gerald who with his wife Nan, own and run the property. They live on site and run a very good operation. Gerald told us of the history of the place. Mr. Alling, who had previously owned the place was a prominent local resident. He also told us of how they have built up the business from scratch and we really admire what they have done. There are many thoughtful touches throughout the property. Examples include a pair of binoculars left by the swing seat on the porch. There are saucers of candy throughout the place - now a little depleted following our visit! They have put together local guides of eateries and places to visit. WiFi is provided foc and in addition, Gerald has provided computers for guests to use. Having previously been a software engineer, Gerald has set up a very comprehensive arrangement. They offer free kayaks and bicycles for guests to use. Gerald will take you to the nearby St Johns River or other nearby places using his SUV. All is included in the price. There is an upstairs guest area where you can sit and relax. They also provide a large fridge with complimentary soft drinks and snacks. Downstairs is a large dining room where breakfast is served and a drawing room with baby grand piano. Musicians will find themselves at home here!
The room itself was very well decorated in the same 'mock Victorian' style as the rest of the house. Some might argue that it was a little 'over fussy' but we were comfortable. All rooms are air conditioned. My only slight grumble is that the door to the en-suite bathroom would not latch shut and there was no bolt fitted. Privacy is required at times.
Breakfast was included in our deal and it was one of the best breakfasts that we have ever had. Nan certainly knows here stuff here. It is served at a large dining table which is shared with other guests. We had fruit salad, eggs benedict, sausages, bacon etc. The list just goes on and on. Whilst enjoying breakfast, we got to chat with Gerald and Nan a little more. They are charming company and clearly care very much for the welfare of their guests. It was clear that they have strong religious convictions but did not appear to mind that we do not share their convictions. They did not proselytize.
In terms of location, Alling house is just off the main highway 92/17. It is easy to find. There is large brown road sign pointing towards Blue Springs State Park. You just turn in the opposite direction to the arrow and Alling House is second house on your left.
Having stayed for a couple of days, we were sad to leave. We have really got to like Gerald and Nan. They are the sort of people that we would include amongst our friends, were they nearer to us. We were delighted by the numerous 'thoughtful touches' throughout the property and we really wish them well in their enterprise. This is one of the best, if not the best B+B that we have ever stayed in. If you can get a reservation, you won't get a better place to stay.
