“Great Hosts!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

Gerald and Nan Hill really know how to do it right! The main house is full of antiques and Victorian in style. Everywhere you look, there is something of historical interest, and Gerald and Nan have a story to go with it. Nan's homemade breakfasts, complete with fresh fruit, juice, fresh muffins and a main course, were delicious. We had some dietary restrictions, and she was quick to make something special for us. Dining and chatting with them and the other guests was a delight, and we all felt like their special guests and lifelong friends.

We stayed in the Frontier Cottage. Each cottage has its own theme and motif, and ours was cowboys and the old west. What a hoot! The decor was replete with cowboy paraphernalia from a gun and holster and a canteen on the headboard (with pony skin inserts!) to a saddle out on the porch. Every time I looked up I noticed something else in the theme and giggled. But, more importantly, the cottage was furnished with every possible thoughtful amenity from Q-Tips to a picnic cooler to a computer with high speed internet and a printer with paper. There was a complete kitchen, including coffee, tea and condiments, milk, cold cereal, orange juice; and a washer and dryer with detergent and fabric softener sheets included. They even included Cutter insect repellent and a citronella candle on the porch and a flashlight next to the bed in case of power outage. Great details!

We purchased a package deal that included use of kayaks and transportation to Blue Spring State Park, use of bicycles, chocolate covered strawberries, and sparkling white grape juice. Gerald and Nan know all the local haunts and have many suggestions and guidance. They are really wonderful innkeepers. We highly recommend Alling House for an escape to Florida as it used to be, before all the theme parks. Put away your cell phone, and set a spell on the porch, taking time to watch squirrels and cardinals darting around a wooded setting, and take a deep breath of fresh air.

Room Tip: There are five cottages, fully outfitted and three rooms with private bathrooms in the main house. T...

The owners are wonderful people. The breakfasts are amazing. the cabins are really small houses in new condition with full baths and kitchens. A computer with free wifi in each one is a very nice touch. Our family stayed in the inn and 2 cabins. In the evening we had a campfire in the center of the private courtyard, surrounded by the palm trees, stars everywhere in the sky. A truly special place made that way by the owners.

I stumbled on this as an alternative to a cookie-cutter hotel when my wife and I were going to spend a day at Blue Springs State Park. You could literally walk to Blue Springs from Alling House (our morning jog took us past it).

Gerald and Nan are a warm and gracious couple; you feel like a house guest rather than a customer.

The place is spotlessly clean, and all the extra touches (ice cream, sodas, and Twixt bars in the upstairs fridge). Gerald is an ex-IT professional, so there are three (count 'em) WiFi access points on the property - I spent a few hours one day working from the upstairs lounge and it was delightful.

Breakfast was delicious the one day we had it. The next morning, we headed out pre-breakfast for a scuba dive at Blue Springs. Nan saw us and asked if she could make us coffee to go. What more can I say?

Blue Springs itself is a great day of recreation. My wife and I did a scuba dive in the spring one day. It's a very different experience from any ocean dive you'll do. The next day we went back with two sons and a daughter-in-law and did the kayak thing, which was fantastic. We got up close and personal with a zillion birds and fish, and a handful of 'gators. Manatees were out of season, unfortunately.

Food tips in Deland:

* Taco stand next to the gas station was delicious, authentic, and cheap.
* Main Street Grill. Meh, not impressed.
* Thai/Sushi - Yum.

Breakfast tip in Orange City:

* Grandma's Kitchen. Breakfast for people who take breakfast seriously. Coffee refills were instant, food was just what you'd want from breakfast. I'm not sure what they'd say if you asked for an egg-white omelet, but you don't go there for an egg-white omelet.

Room Tip: Green Room is cozy for a couple (except the bathroom, which is huge). If you need "walking arou...

The Alling House Bed and Breakfast is one of the best B & B's we have ever visited. Nan and Gerald are so accommodating and made sure all our request and questions were answered immediately. We used the kayak to paddle to Blue Springs and enjoyed the peace on the river, the school of 6 manatees we passed and the mother and baby manatee we were privileged to observe. No other B & B we have stayed at provided so many amenities and extra provisions. Snacks were provided in the kitchen and the refrigerator was stocked with water, sodas, orange juice and other items not typically found B&Bs.We absolutely loved our visit and have scheduled another for out anniversary in June. Tom and Brenda

Room Tip: The Victorian Cottage is very romantic and great for couples.

We recently spent 3 nights in the Homestead Cottage while visiting some friends who were camping at Blue Springs. It was a most pleasant stay, very clean, plenty of room, well-equipped kitchen, & very personable hosts. We will definitely return if we get back to Orange City again.
Didn't get to try one of Nan's breakfasts but hopefully next time.

Room Tip: We stayed in a cottage & would probably do that again just because we liked the extra space &...

Alling House is the one of the best B&Bs I have ever stayed at. I was especially taken with the amenities not always found in B&Bs. I had a TV, wireless Internet and a desktop computer in the common area for my use, a full bath with a wide tiled shower stall and a refrigerator stocked with sodas and ice cream.

Nan gave me a tour of the cabins so I can attest to the beauty of each and every one of them. The same loving detail to comfort and convenience abounds in the cabins, as in the rooms of the main house. There is ample history to read of the house and the family who have worked hard to provide weary travelers a home away from home.

Breakfast is good too!

Room Tip: Three rooms in main house are named by their wall colors--Green, Gold and Rose. Green is the smalle...

This is our third visit to Alling House and it just keeps getting better! Nan and Gerald own and operate this traditional Bed and Breakfast with additional, non-traditional cabins! Each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, private bathroom and bedroom. Some even have a second bedroom. Each are differently themed: Frontier, Nature, Railroad, Victorian, etc. Magazines, videoes, books, games, televison, computer, bikes and kyaks are included so just bring your family and be sure to begin each day with a breakfast with the gracious owners. Very Affordable!!!

Room Tip: Cabins! All overlook a central courtyard so just find a themed cabin that reflects your interests.
