“Bring lots of bug spray”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012 via mobile

Great campground but the mosquitos are enormous and hungry. The campground offers very nice trails and the staff is very friendly.

We rented a cabin for 2 nights and loved it! The cabin is very spacious, you feel like being isolated in the forest, without roughing it. It was fully equipped with fridge, microwave, linen, and a fireplace which the kids loved. In the daytime, we tried all the short walks of Silver Spring State Park, and also drove to Juniper Spring where the kids had a quick swil in the chilly pool.

Florida State Park rental cabins located in silver River State Park are a great option to roughing it.

The cabins have two rooms, one bathroom with tub, a living room with gas fireplace (operates in winter months only), and the cabin has duct heating and Air Conditioning. It's a bit pricey, but you get a lot for the money.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, the second bedroom has two twin beds. The living room has a couch that folds down into a bed, and two chairs near the fireplace. The fireplace starts with a flick of a switch and adds a nice touch to the winter evenings.

When you arrive, the rangers at the state park entrance will give you your key to the cabin and a map on how to get there. Each cabin has paved parking spaces, with a lamp post near the paved walkway to the cabin. The light is operated from inside the cabin, so if you want total darkness, you have that option. The cabins have a fully screened-in porches that stretch the entire length of the cabin, and then some. Our porch (in cabin number 9) had a double rocking chair and two additional rocking chairs. The porch had lighting, fans, and a full sized picnic table. The space is bug free and a great place to hangout.

The cabins have a dining room between the living room and the kitchen. The interior ceiling in the main living space is vaulted, giving the space a much larger feeling. Our cabin was probably around 1,200 sf including the porch. That's my guess.

The kitchen has everything. It's not fancy, nor are the items, but it works and it was clean. You'll find a dishwasher, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, and a full oven, not just a stove top range, but a full working oven. Bring on the pizzas or turkey! The pans are basic as well as the utensils, but everything was functional. In the corner is a full dishwasher. There are some dish washcloths and they had stocked the kitchen with some dish soap and dish washing detergent.

The bedroom linen is stacked on the bed, so when you arrive you'll need to make up your beds. They have all the linen, pillows and towels in the cabin. Nothing fancy, but better than expected. The beds are adequate and we didn't complain.

Just off of the cabin porch you'll find a fire pit complete with wooden benches to sit on. Wood is available for sale at the park ranger's office. The wood we bought was some of the best campfire wood we've ever used. I have no idea what type of wood it was, but it made for a great campfire.

There are no phone, tvs, or electronics in the cabin. We did have cell phone service. Spending the weekend in the peace and quiet was quite a change from our electronically charged house. The setting was very tranquil and restful.

Activities around the cabin include nice hiking trails, canoe rentals, and a historical homestead exhibit. The canoeing is great, just make sure you go upriver to the head of Silver Springs River. We saw rhesus monkeys in the trees while we were paddling upstream, and a few gators, too.

The cabins are spaced apart from each other with lots of trees filling in the ample space between the units. You won't feel like you're camping in your neighbors font porch.

If you're looking for something fun to do that's above rustic, but comfortable, consider these cabins.

Just an FYI, the limit of people in this cabin is six, and no pets are allowed.

Spacious pitches for tents or RVs. You will need steel pegs if tent camping due to gravel base. Pitch had water and power hook up. Surrounded by forest so very private and quiet. Showers were hot and very clean. The infra red lights and fans in the shower block suggest there is a mosquito issue here but not when we were there as it was below freezing. Amazing trails, particularly the "swamp trail" where we saw deer, armadillo, foxes, lots of water birds. hard to believe how near the camp is to the main road, you wouldn't know. You will need to take all groceries in as there is no store.
