We just got back last week. We stayed four nights and had a nice comfortable king sized bed with balcony overlooking the Gulf. The shower was a little funky with the hot-cold in the morning. Nice sized pool with towels. The restaurant in the hotel was nice, had a good diverse menu and the staff were very friendly.
For $25 we rented a cabana and just hung out on the beach all day. After working up an appetite we walk to the hotel and had lunch on the deck, then it was back to work lying in the sun for the rest of the day, if you wanted you could also rent jet skis, kayaks and small catamarans.
We took the trolley to John Pass in the morning and walked back along the beach. The trolley will take you the whole length of Gulf Blvd from Clearwater to St Pete’s. $3 for a day pass and if your from Canada you need your picture taken so you can have a card made up verifying you a senior or you will not be able to get a seniors discount even though the couple we saw was well into their 70's and were made to pay full price.
We found a great restaurant called Guppy's about 5 miles north of the hotel in Indian Rocks Beach and highly recommend it.
The best part of the stay and the above average rating I have given is: Finding our accommodations through GTAHotels through Nextag for half the price the hotel was asking. Doubletree wanted $324 a night we got it for $166. We were a bit leery as GTAHotel is out of Istanbul Turkey. When I called Doubletree two days after I made the reservation they didn’t have us down as guest on the date we had reserved. After calling GTA I was told to call one week before our arrival. I did and our reservations were confirmed. Much to my relief.
It was an older crowd at the hotel (perhaps the price had something to do with that) a few families and some younger couples. It is a beautiful place to park it for a few days and enjoy the beach. It was hard to get a parking spot Friday night as the hotel has a great BBQ type cook out, and Sundays is the "world famous" breakfast buffet. I did not like the $10 a day internet room charge they want. That goes for any hotel charging a premium for the room as it is.
All in all if you want a nice relaxing time along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico with spectacular sunsets, then this is the place. I would recommend this for couples wanting time alone.
