“Don't be too fussy and you'll love it there!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2010

Hey,let's be honest here...It's a dump, for the most part. We've stayed here many times, and noticed the ongoing decay,so we got "the best room available" this time.We paid $130-plus for a room I'd balk at anywhere else for $45/night,but we had a terrific time anyway.

You just can't beat the location,if Haulover is your destination, and the staff is terrific, albeit a tad quirky.(Matches the clientele.)

I can only recommend this place to people who want to be within an easy walk to the nude beach, and who like to swim naked in the very warm pool late at night. If that's your thing, the Ocean Palm is a no-brainer.

I'll be back,for sure.

This place was good enough for us because we were on the go and also on a budget. It is close to the beach and really nice well kept ffacilities. The room was clean and recently renovated. The parking was tight but close to our room. It was also close to the main road as well which wasnt that great but it wasnt totally noisy either. I was a bit skeptical about the safety because it was only a regular door which opened to the carpark and to the right of my room was the road. But eventually it didnt bother me when i settled in. The high speed internet wasnt working on our comuter no mattter where i tried so i had to go somewhere else when i left. The floor had clay tiles so it was a lil cold. One of our beds were not comfortable at all but thank God the other bed had a good mattress! I really liked this place despite all of this. The staff were really really nice as well! I would recommend this motel!

Every time I visit this place, they say they're going to knock it down. But after this last trip and speaking to the front desk, it seems like it's not going anywhere soon. The building that "was" going up to the South of the Ocean Palm started construction but came to a quick halt when to owner had a crane accident in NYC and put them out of business. If you like visiting the nude beach, this place is literally a 3 minute walk from the motel.

Our 2nd trip here. Great location on the beach, but hotel has been allowed to go downhill. Rooms shabby. Fairly clean but the rug must have been filthy--walking around barefoot in the room lead to tar-black feet (and I'm as white as the underbelly of a flounder). Pool was nice. Staff at desk were helpful and nice but we were not told ahead of time that the rates would go up over the holiday weekend. I could have perhaps abided all that but there was NO ICE MACHINE on the property. I suppose the owners are not investing in it with an eye to selling it to make way for another behemoth cement slab of sun-eclipsing condominiums.

We stayed for three nights at the Ocean Palm. This was our first trip during the summer and the motel had lots of families. That's a first for our trips. We opted to upgrade from the $80 efficiency to the $90 "renovated" efficiency and it was worth it . The bathroom had been fully renovated to much better standards than when we stayed before in the cheaper rooms. I really recommend the upgrade.

The pool as always was clean as was the area. The families utilized the huge barbeque grill (charcoal) the whole time we were there.

Ok. From reading the other reports, you know its a little old run down motel, but the new upgraded rooms make this as nice as we needed for our trip.

Due to the families, it was sort of like staying at a Holiday Inn. There was no hanky panky going on.

The Trump towers on the north side were finished, but there was not a single light on in the two nearest towers and just a few in the most northern of the three towers. It was really strange seeing them completely dark at night. The lot to the south had a building on it this time with about four floors completed. It appeared to be abandoned construction. I imagine we have at least another year with the Ocean Palm before the Trumpets start moving in to the north and the building to the south gets finished. We'll be back in the fall without the families.

This property opened in 1949 and was reportedly the first two-story motel in the United States. Cheap, very close to Haulover Beach, heated pool that is occasionally nude, ridiculously tight but free parking, and continental breakfast is included. Recently, they have switched to individually-wrapped pasteries which means your breakfast is a lot more likely to be edible.

No nuiscance add-ons for things like safes and resort fees . Good selection of cable channels. Only hotel I've ever stayed at that collects a (cash) deposit for the room key and telephone but they do give it back when you check out. No automated reservation systems here! Your reservation is recorded by a piece of tape on a calendar on the wall and every receipt is hand-written.

Not fancy, but reasonably clean and did I mention that it's the closest hotel to Haulover's C/O Beach?

For an interesting experience, have a chat with Robert on the hotel staff.

Couple of things to be aware of. This area of North Miami Beach used to be all mom and pop hotels but has been taken over by condo developers. This is the last mom-and-pop left in the immediate area. The property to the north is now the site of 40+ story Trump Tower III currently under construction:

[--]

Immediately to the south, the 50+ story Solis Sunny Isles Residences is also under construction:

[--]

Construction starts promptly at 7:00am during the week. You won't be able to sleep in. But, did I mention that it's the closest hotel to Haulover's C/O beach? Visit the Ocean Market just down Collins, pack a cooler of beer, and head down the beach. You won't be disappointed!

There aren't a lot of restauarants in easy walking distance. But, there is fairly frequent bus service along Collins and a wide selection of restaurants can be found a mile or so north. The pizza delivery guys will also deliver here.

Recent reports are that the OP will be replaced by a 42 story Chi condomininium. As of this writing, the owner indicated that it might be another couple of years. We certainly hope so.

If you want amentities, stay somewhere else. But, for a short visit to Haulover, this is a great place to stay.
