“Great mini-vacay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

My fiance and I have looked at tons of places to get married, and after doing a quick site tour we decided to stay over for a night to get the full experience. We were very impressed! The subtle elegance of the resort is what I liked the most. I feel like many resorts turn out to be ostentatious, but South Seas has kept to the Captiva lifestyle and really done a great job at keeping with the theme. We stayed at a waterside room and had the most incredible views from our balcony. They added a great touch to give us a bottle of wine and chocolates to celebrate our stay and out of all the places we have stayed and looked at, we really felt like they cared we were thinking about spending the most important day of our lives with them. I loved how open and spread out the resort was, but it was also a quick and pretty walk to the pool, the docks and to the beach. It really has a little bit of everything you could want, but without the crazy tourism that we can't stand over in our area in Tampa Bay. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere with the island lifestyle, this is a great place to be.

We have vacationed at South Seas for the past 27 years. it is a fabulous resort with wonderful family memories, but each year it loses something....getting more "corporate, commercial" This year the $17 a day amenities fee per person seems to be discouraging people from using the facilities. there was no one in scoops and slices. The trolley was empty...why would a resort charge a fee to have the privilege of eating in their restaurants, Harborside, the main one was closed! and whose brilliant idea was it to make guests wear a plastic hospital band to be able to use the facilities? i hope the management considers its guests and gets back to the quality resort it once was!

I have been coming here for years as has my family. Since new managers have taken over, the changes have been for the worse. Simple items like soap and toilet paper in the bathrooms have been replaced with bargain basement alternatives (like sandpaper!). Key restaurants, like Harborside, are closed. Prices for food and drinks are higher - Breakfast for two people cost $75.00 as a Bloody Mary in a tiny plastic cup filled with ice costs $10.00 (and drinks in plastic cups are low budget). Lastly, the new wristband system is ridiculous. I cannot believe at a place like South Seas their new policy is making adults wear plastic wristbands. I have been on cruise lines with more class. New management is making poor decisions and it cheapens the experience here. No class in this poorly thought out decision. By the way, the staff complains about new management as well and it shows in their apathy. The service was the worst it has been in ten years.

Thank you for staying with us and sharing your feedback. I am disappointed to read that this visit did not live up to your expectations and I appreciate the opportunity to address comments.

The management and brand specifications of South Seas' in-room amenities and resort programs have remained constant since the resort's reopening in 2006, and our guests and members welcome our commitment to creating fun and enriching programs and amenities.
The closing of Harbourside Bar & Grill is only temporary, as it was due for a renovation, both front and back of house, and should reopen within the next week. In the meantime The Pointe, located within the Resort Pool Complex, North Pointe, is serving the same breakfast and dinner as Harbourside offers, while continuing to offer its traditional lunch service. The opening of Doc Ford's Rum Bar & Grille has been a wonderful addition to the dining options at South Seas for both Captiva visitors and residents. With its two bars, outdoor seating, live entertainment, and Caribbean-infused menu, Doc Ford's is dedicated to revitalizing the space that was once Chadwick's restaurant.

The new wristband procedure is an initiative derived from the feedback of our guests. Guests told us they did not like having to keep keys/charge cards for all members of their party in order to gain access to the resort amenities like the pool complex, beach equipment, and trolleys. The matter of convenience is addressed as now instead of digging through your pockets/purse to find keys for the entire group, a quick flash of the wrist will identify guests that are eligible to utilize the amenities they enjoy so much, while also controlling who has the ability to charge items to their room. I'll never forget the day a mother brought her son to the reception office to discuss the $30 worth of candy he purchased at Scoops & Slices. And finally, with the feedback from our guests, we will address any opportunities that arise with this new system.

In closing, again I thank you for returning to Captiva and I trust your next visit will provide an experience above and beyond your expectations. If you would like to discuss further, I am happy to do so.

With warm regards,
Anthonia Smith

South Seas covers a large portion of Captiva. There are privately owned units, time shares and hotel rooms. We stayed in the Harborview Hotel area. Our room was on the second floor and had a balcony overlooking the harbor. Three of us fit comfortably in the room which had 2 double/queen size beds and a good size desk. The bathroom was quite large and included a closet area with a safe, a fridge, an ironing board and iron and a few shelves and a closet. There were double sinks, a toilet in a small room and an oval tub/shower. The tub would have been improved if it had grab bars on the walls since you had to climb in and out. The room was a cool white....a few colorful accent pictures would have been nice. There was a small coffee maker in the room and a flat screen TV.
I had balked at paying a daily resort fee, but after staying here I realized it was worth it. The resort hotel area includes: 3 pools, a beach, a family play center, a sea school nature center, a store with a small deli inside, two restaurants, a pizza/ice cream cafe, water sports rental dock, and a golf course. You can also rent bikes or a golf cart. There is also a free trolley that will take you around the resort.
The resort is very family friendly and offers free family and child activities as well as a camp for a fee. Two of the pools have child friendly features---one with two big water slides and one with shooting water, The pools all have shallow areas.
Towels and chaise lunges are available at the pools and the beach---and umbrellas. At the pool you can order drinks, sandwhiches , salads and snacks pool side and the beach has a small snack bar. We found the chips and sals and guacamole and the french fries to be very generous portions. The pool servers were very pleasant.
The beach was a little walk from our room but you could drive to a near by parking lot. We did find some very nice shells on the beach. A shell cleaning area would have been a nice touch.
The resort is beautifully landscaped and well maintained. It was a pleasure walking around the grounds.
South Seas also includes Chadwick Square where there is a Starbucks, an upscale food store and shops. This shopping area is across the road from the resort .
On the resort grounds you use your room key for purchases and this is a very convenient system.
Oh, we watched dolphins from our balcony---very magical!

Room Tip: While there are elevators, if you have mobility issues, ask for a first floor room as the steps are...

Overall a great resort and great experience, but don't expect to get connected to WI - FI and if you do don't expect it to stay connected. That was the only issue, as unfortunately when I travel I do have to conduct some business.

Thanks for staying at South Seas Island Resort, Dan. I apologize that you had trouble connecting during your stay. On October 25, 2013 we upgraded our bandwith to 150mb, which should help drastically improve load times and the overall online experience for our guests. We also will be improving other infrastructure that will improve connectivity. We also have a complimentary business center which is open 24/7 and is located in the reception center.

Again I thank you for staying with us and I hope your work wasn't too impeded during your stay. We look forward to your return.

By far the best family vacation ever!!! The resort is amazing, the staff was great - we loved everything about it! We traveled with two 4 year olds and a 21 month old and everyone was fully entertained and had a great time. No one wanted to come home. We rented a golf cart and did the scavenger hunt - a great way to see the whole resort. We can't wait to go back. There's so much to do that our short 3 day stay wasn't enough time to fit it all in.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 2 bedroom Marina Villas - close to the beach and resort pool. Great location if tr...

My husband and I recently stayed at the South Seas Resort, and it was one of the best vacations we've ever had. The rooms were spacious and clean. The resort staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Loved all of the amenities. The pools and beach were amazing, and everything was easily accessible from our room at the Harbour Side. I would highly recommend visiting this little piece of "South Seas Paradise!"
