“Great family getaway!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

We stayed in a Harbor side water view room. The room was big, bright, clean with a nice view of the sound/gulf. Bathroom was huge! Great location near water sports (got to do the banana boat ride!), pools, scoops ice cream shop, and close to the beach. Our vacation was one of the most relaxing I have ever had, very laid back atmosphere. My son (14) said there wasn't much to do... until he realized that that was the point!

Our friends stayed in one of the Land's End villas - 3 bedrooms, 3 baths with views of the golf course and water. These are exceptional and well appointed. Great for large party, with wrap around porches - gorgeous!

All charges are made to the room keys - no cash. Except for the guys who set up the umbrellas and chairs on the beach where we tipped them with cash. Remember it is a resort and thus you will pay resort prices for everything. There is a "general store" which was near the Marina/Harborside and they had EVERYTHING, including some great bottles of wine! But you will pay for it. Boars Head sub for $11. But hey! it is a vacation, right?

We mostly experiences great service - the Harborside restaurant for breakfast however, was very poor. Service slow as well as very poor quality of food. Skip the buffet and go the store for a bagel.

We will be going back next year for an end of the summer getaway...booking now even! We didn't rent a golf cart, but will definitely spring for it next year!

We go to South Seas every summer for about a week. This year we noticed that they have done alot of updating to the rooms and property- painting, etc. We always stay in the Harbourside Hotel rooms with the waterview. The room is right on the bay. You can hear the waves at night lapping on the shore that is feet from our room. We called as the email suggested when we were crossing the big bridge to Sanibel. When we arrived, they had numerous staff members available for check-in (this was an improvement over past years). We gave our name and all of our keys etc were already ready. We were checked-in extremely quickly. Upon arrival to our room we immediately spotted 3 pods of dolphins feeding a short distance from our balcony. At the beach, the attendants were happy to direct or set up our chairs and umbrella. Note- there is one maybe two guys, so if you go at a peak time you may have to wait your turn to be helped. Also, the later you get there the farther back from the shore you will be. We arrived before 10:00 each morning and had no problems getting a first row umbrella. They also have a big storage bin full of sand toys etc that I presume have been left by previous guests that are available for use. Thank you to previous guests who decided not to take thses with them. When we wanted a break from the ocean, the pool offered another option. At the pool, we found the staff very friendly and attentive- also an improvement over years past although we have always been happy with the service by the pool. It was just a step up this year. Our food was also very tasty at the pool. I have seen some comments on friendliness or the lack there of on the part of the staff. I suggest being friendly first- you may be surprised that you get back what you sow. Try treating them like people and use your manners and you will be very satisfied with your service. Our room did have a couple of issues that were resolved quickly and politely. During a rain storm water was coming in from one of the sliders due to a maintenance issue. They came quickly and repaired it on the spot. The AC in the bathroom was dripping, again maintenace came, cleaned it up and determined the cause. We love nature so we would take regular walks around the Tdock, beach and Redfish Pass. The scenery and wildlife are amazing. South Seas will continue to be a summer destination for our family with something to do for everyone.

Room Tip: For families of 4 or less opt for the Harbourside Hotel rooms for the most economical selection. Ch...

We stayed at the Plantation Beach Club III on the grounds of South Seas Island Resort. The unit is direct golf front, the verandas face the ocean and are totally screened in. The units have been very recently redone and are perfect for a beach vacation. These units have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, very nice sized kitchen, a dining area and a living area with sleeper sofa and tv. There is a pool, grilling area and laundry room just a few steps from the units. But the best thing is the beach is also just a few steps from your door.

South Seas offers a "package" that is purchased separately which includes wi-fi, free use of the trolley that runs through the resort, charging priviledges and admission to the "water park" pool area. The "water park" area is 2 tunnel slides going into a pool and another area with a pool and some other activities on another beach. It was a bit pricey and we didn't use it very much - probably won't purchase it next time.

Overall, we extremely enjoyed the time spent there and will definitely return.

Room Tip: All units at Plantation Beach Club face the ocean, no elevators but the ground floor is parking with...

There is many choices of accommodation but as we'd booked through Trailfinders & wanted 2 bed accommodation we found ourselves in the Marina villa's. These are 2 storey buildings with 2 bed villas, they overlook the marina which is lovely and the location is great, being near the pools/shops/restaurant and gorgeous beach for shelling. I'd read reviews about some of the accommodation needing updating so had requested a modernised villa before we arrived. Ours was fine, I wouldn't say ultra modern but decor all ok. They had nice balconies and a good kitchen area, which allowed us to cook for a few evenings and then one time we had take-away pizza from 'Scoop's', one large pizza at $28 easily fed four of us so good value. Unfortunately for us 2 out of the 3 days absolutely poured it down with rain, so I don't have the best memories! This was a bit troublesome for the cleaners as we weren't out the room much (there's not a lot to do when it's thunder & lightening!). One day I did ask they come back in 30mins (this was at 10am) as we were going out but instead they came back at 5pm! not the right time to be in the villa cleaning! so the 2 days we were there we didn't get a cleaning service, it just seemed very 'laid back' - they didn't seem bothered that they weren't cleaning our room. My only other gripe is that this accommodation is 'privately owned' and as a result despite us having our own little pool there were no beach towels. If you went to the resort pool you got towels but you weren't allowed to take them out that pool area! we did and then used them around our little pool but seems rather petty to me when it's marketed as one resort? Overall Captiva island is lovely and I think they have done this resort out really well. I would recommend it and just hope you get lovely sunny weather, I know it would have made all the difference for our trip there.

Room Tip: We were top floor on the marina villa's - nice for the view but there's no lift so be aware...

Great location. Generous accommodation. Pricey. In addition to the room charge you pay a resort fee, that includes your beach chair, umbrella, use of pool, WiFi and other stuff that should be included. There are three pools and a jacuzzi, but they are overcrowded and screaming and playing children take over all areas. The drinks are expensive and so is the food at the resort's stores. The rooms are very clean and very generously laid out but the plumbing is poorly insulated and the walls are very thin. You'll be a part of your surrounding neighbors.

My husband and I returned to South Seas Island Resort after 12 years July 2013. Many changes have been made there since our last stay. Once again, we stayed at the Beach Villas at the South End of the Resort and were grateful we did. We were a bit tentative about what type of accommodations we would be placed in based on others reviews, but took suggestions to request an updated unit, which we were fortunate enough to receive! We stayed in building 2500 unit 23 (2523) which had attractive, well maintained furnishings and was very comfortable for just the two of us (we had a 1 bedroom unit). The views to the gulf are unobstructed though there is quite a bit of tropical vegetation before the shoreline so don't expect to see gulf waves lapping at your door. The South end of the resort is DEFINITELY where I would stay again if you are traveling without children. The North End, which has far more activity, is clearly more geared to families with multiple resort style pools available. While we did ride our rented bikes up there and enjoyed one late afternoon swim, it was more 'activity' than we wanted on our kid-free trip. (Had our son been with us...well this is no doubt where HE would have wanted to be ;) .

South Seas sophistication has improved over the years, and their offerings of amenities have expanded too. The bike rental for $5/day was a must and was a blast! We enjoyed leaving the resort to grab some fish at the island grocery store on Tuesdays and Thursdays from the fish truck, riding our bikes to the post office to mail a card or two or just ride to the North end to explore the activities up there. There are two marinas now, as opposed to only one and both are lovely. Golf cart rentals are available, and while they are a lot of fun, they are pricey. There are several restaurants at the resort as well, but smaller local restaurants are within walking distance of the South End of the resort as well.

We fixed most meals in the unit, which had a full kitchen with bar stools, living room, separate bedroom with King bed and a screened lanai with dining table and lounge chair. The kitchen is VERY sparsely outfitted and that was at times difficult. There was not even a cookie sheet/baking pan in the unit. While the unit is designed for a maximum of four people, it is pretty silly to only provide FOUR forks/knives/spoons/plates etc. It seemed wasteful to have to run a dishwasher daily with only a few items in it just because there were only a few forks. It seemed to us that the kitchens were not intended to actually be used, except perhaps for breakfast because any real food preparation required MacGuivering due to the lack of basic kitchen necessities.

The grounds and property of this resort are beautiful and well maintained, include several pools (a nice smaller pool at the South end of the resort that is far less crowded than the busy North End), has several restaurants, many planned activities, etc. Beach side umbrellas, lounges and towels are available to guests and the Gulf side North beach area has music, a bar, water sports rentals such as kayaks etc. There is a nice 9-hole golf course that we did not use during this stay (though we did on our last) which is spectacular.

If you have the resources, consider renting a boat for a full day or half day excursion. We have done that both times down here and has by far been the highlight of our trip. Boat rentals can be had right at South Seas for either half or full day, or at Tween Waters Inn Marina. Fishing license is required if you want to through out a line, but those are also available right on site. We enjoyed sea trout for dinner after catching them on our excursion, and spotted a loggerhead turtle and several manatees in the water near cayo Costa.

South Seas is not an all inclusive resort and you can rack up some hefty additional costs if you are not careful.

There is a Costco, Fresh Market and Publix all on the mainland just before the causeway and we did make use of them before we hit the island. We were also careful to plan our meals and outings so that we made the best use of the resort without spending more than we were comfortable (which also made the boat rental viable.)

We have enjoyed both of our stays to South Seas and would definitely come again, if there weren't so many other places to explore too!

I would recommend South Seas to either couples or families, and would steer families to the North End and couples South based on our experiences here. We loved the Beach Villas and would stay there again, over any other location. There is plenty to do, the staff is friendly and polite, and the resort is well run. Watch your expenses carefully, as sundries are expensive and can add up quickly.

Room Tip: Unit 2523 in beach Villas is updated and very comfortable. Stay South if you are traveling without k...
