North Captiva is a fabulous secluded island with lots of beach and no crowds and well worth the hassle of getting there (taxi followed by boat).
We just completed year two at North Captiva Island club. Avoiding Easter week was a big boon. The small laid back staff were friendly and helpful, including the manager. All of our problems and quetions were resolved.
Although our house (a five star house at more than $4000 a week) had gotten a bit run down since last year, the houses are really first class accommodations. Where else can you have a large house overlooking the beach with a private pool, big screen TV and all the amenities for such a good price? Obviously, some owners take better care of their homes than others and some get regular care and updates.
The club provides you with a golf cart and has bikes and kayaks available. There are a couple of pools (not very impressive), 2 nice tennis courts, a small store, a new souvenir shop and two restaurants-one cafeteria style (order in the store and eat outside) and a white tablecloth "fancy restaurant." That's it other than an ice cream hut, a restaurant and a small souvenir shop on the other side of the island.
The casual restaurant had very good food-long wait because it was freshly cooked and because you have to stand in line at the general store to order. Eating late (1:30) proved to be the perfect time. The nice restaurant, the Boathouse, was a disappointment this year. Although ambience, service and presentation were great, all of our food was overcooked (included filet mignon, chicken and fish) even though we were the first ones there. For around $50-$60 per person, one would hope for better. Also, the menu on the website and in the brochures is last year's menu. We and several other tables asked for last year's peach chicken. Too bad the chef from last year left!!
If you want to relax, want pure beauty and lots of peace and quiet, this is the place. However, much as we loved the peace, we really would have liked to do a bit more since we stayed more than a week. It would be great if the resort could get groups together to go on excursions since the rate for an individual is astronomical. We tried to go on the trip to Boca Grande but 10 people are needed and it was not publicized by the resort. While we understand that people come here to do nothing, a weekly sheet given to the guests with listings of available excursions and activities would be super.
The lack of activities affects the tween/teen crowd. Despite warnings, the major past time is illegally driving the golf carts, doing wheelies and coming close to crashing into others. How about teen mixers by the pool and other activities during peak weeks? I realize this isn't the Westin or the Four Seasons but those sandy roads become mighty dangerous when a 10 year old is driving unsupervised!!! Simple things such as a barbecue, dance, smores or sundaes by the pool would benefit this group as well as the rest of the guests on the island. Skim board and snorkeling rentals, game library and video system rentals could also alleviate the problem. There are any number of easy inexpensive solutions that don't require hiring more staff.
In sum, this is a super place. A few changes and it could really be paradise.
