“A return visit...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

We used to stay at the Gulf Surf in the 80's and early 90's when visiting my mother-in-law who lived in the area. We had to be in the Sarasota area for a weekend so decided to see what it was like 20 years later. I wanted to rent unit #7, beachfront with two bedrooms, two baths. This was the unit we stayed in when we used to come down. When I called to make the reservation, I was told that unit was not available, so we booked two smaller units. (We were traveling with our now grown children.) The first night we were there, we were the only guests. Another room was rented the second two nights we were there--but not the room we had originally asked for. That unit stayed empty the whole time we were there. Apparently the housekeeper was on vacation, so the room couldn't be cleaned for us to use. Seriously? Other than that, our stay was great. The rooms have been refurbished since we were there many years ago. They are very clean and bug free. The beach is fabulous, the Gulf of Mexico was very warm. We were hoping to observe some turtle hatching, but that didn't happen while we were there. There were several marked nests on the beach. All in all, I would recommend the Gulf Surf to anyone. It isn't fancy, but it is comfortable. My only complaint was not getting the room we wanted, and that had nothing to do with the place itself--maybe just a bit of laziness on management's part.

This is a traditional Florida Resort of the past. If you want the Hyatt or Marriott facilities, then stay there - not here. It is a beautiful location and the people are very friendly. We meet there every year at the same time and have met people who have been coming since they were kids and they are in their 50's now. Turtle nesting, dolphins, shells and shark's teeth are among the features.

Noisy window unit which leaked. Very hot in unit because window unit was no where near adequate for the space. This was the beachfront on the right side. Cleanliness average & needs updating. They really believe nothing needs to be changed because of the location.

we called this hotel 3 weeks prior to out visit to ok that my family with 3 children would visit. We advised them that we are driving an rv down and would need to park it there. They said no problem. We drove 2200 miles to go to this place! When we arrived the hotel manager diane was so very rude, she told us her toilets couldnlt handle all our kids and we could not all shower in her place ($700) to stay there. She also told us not to "bother her other guests" what??? First thing the next morning as my kids were very quietly trying to get ready to go swimming the manager diane told us to pack up and leave. She said she wasn't a camp ground and we couldn't park our rv...so we packed not even 24 hours after she said it was ok to stay. The room was dirty broken glass on the floor that my kids cut their feet. Cracked paint and old bathroom fixtures...I guess I can see why she asks her guests not to shower or use the toilet there...never had that happen at a hotel. Never been treated so rude. I will make it my personal goal to let everyone know not to visit this place! Its too bad because the location of the place is simply breathtaking! It seems kids and families are not welcome..how terrible..my kids were crying as they packed their toys and we drove away. Shame on you diane!

Wonderful old Florida motel right on the beach. Time is occupied by watching nature (tons of different birds, dolphins dancing, bait fish jumping & rays going by) or collecting shells & sharks teeth while guessing hatch dates on all the staked out turtle nests. QUIET place that seems very non commercial & more couple / adult oriented.

Brought our bicycles & enjoyed the trip from one end to the other of Casey Key - multimillion (billion?) dollar mansions. Pick up the fixings for frozen drinks & kick back with a good book for a great day. Other renters brought fishing poles to pass the time and grills are available.

Staff is very friendly & truly wants you to have a great visit. Renovations have been ongoing & the finished units look great (not ours on this trip but that was OK). Most of the other guests have been coming there for years....we now know why & will (hopefully) be back again.

Room Tip: Room 1 & 7 have porches directly on the gulf, 6 has a porch that can look out to the gulf &...

Stayed at this hidden gem with my sister and brother-in -law. Tucked away among homes of the rich and famous, the old Florida style motel is a hold out to simplier times. The rooms are small and "old style" but well maintained and sufficient. The screened in porches are a nice touch. The true treasure of this motel is the location - you are right on a pristine and unspoiled stretch of beach.....l literally steps away. There are several "locals" that come to visit - a blue heron and several white egrets. The beach is a shell collectors paradise. The motel is in a wonderful location for local restaurants, Venice, and Sarasota. If you want a place to simply kick back and chill out - this is the spot for you. The management of the motel treats you more like family than guests, and its nice to see that still exists!

Our family has been going to Gulf Surf for years. It is a very small Mom and Pop motel with no frills. But it sits directly on million dollar beach front property. The location is out of this world! The beach has lots of shells, sharks teeth and so much wildlife that it is a protected Key. We had turtles nesting when we were there. We saw manatees mere feet from us and one bumped into my son! Every day we were in the water we saw dolphins and had egrets, ibis and all sorts of birds inches away from us. If you stay at Gulf Surf there is an egret that comes to the door looking for handouts. It is a quite, private place with the most beautiful beach. Perfect for families.
