“Hotel and Marina have a strange relationship”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

We stopped at the Port of the Islands Marina for a couple of nights and ran into a strange business environment. The marina is a separate entity from the hotel and it would appear there are political issues that keep the two units from working together.

We could get a slip in the marina but there was no access to showers as the hotel controlled the only showers folks at the marina could access. They had a policy that you had to sign up for a months "membership" to access the showers. The folks at the marina felt bad and indeed went out of their way to help us. There was even a boater that offered us access to the shower on her boat - Great Folks.

We solved our shower problem by cruising into the mangroves and using our "Sun Shower".

With the state of the economy you would think that the hotel and marina would work together to maximize business to the benefit of each unit.

Thus, unless you want to work around the strange relationship at this resort area you may want to pass on this place.

Arriving in the wee hours of the night only after searching for several hours to find an available room within 150 miles of civilization. Traveling down a long winding road into the dark Florida everglades we arrived at a hotel half lit. Stepping up to check in with the toothless wonder at the front desk wearing a worn out fubu shirt from the early 80's I realized that the place I had read on line was not the same as described. I took a tour of 4 rooms and decided to stay in one of their best options for the night. I entered into the room next door because the door didn't work on the room they were suggesting but the room I had to walk through had no air conditioning. My wife and I stayed a period of 5 hours from 2am-7am sleeping with one eye open. Of course that was after her begging me to just sleep in the car. Also, please be aware that there is a nonrefundable deposit. I don't suggest this place to anyone.
Lastly, I was informed by the front desk the next morning that the hotel had been closed for the last 10 years due to a drug bust from the government. It turns out that the cartel had functioned their operations there for many years. If you plan on staying here...you do at your own risk but is not recommended.

Signed,
Very unhappy customer (with nightmares)

We stayed here for 3 days in November 2011 and having read the reviews were not sure what to expect, but this was the ideal location for our short visit to the everglade nation park so booked it, along with 3 trips.
The hotel is very quiet and its a shame that the restaurant and bar are no longer open but don't let this put you off, it didn't us. The room we had was within the hotel itself, access is by a balcony which goes round the main lobby area, which I have to say, is huge.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and our room was excellent, well equipped and clean. The maids attended every day and kept everything well stocked.
Wifi was free and fast, although wasn't working on our first day there.
For those of you that are into fitness in a big way, just off the upper balcony in a large room is a fitness suite with equipment you wouldn't normally see outside of a David Lloyd gym, they had some really top end stuff and it was all free to use. Just across the landing from the fitness suite was a Guys den ! but the girls could use it as well :-)
This was kitted out with large leather settees and chairs all facing an enormous plasma screen TV. Also in the room were 2 full sized american pool tables and 2 poker tables. Bookcases contained a variety of books, DVD's and games. Did I mention ! their was also a DVD player. This was all free to use by the guests.
So yes it is a quiet hotel but all the facility's are there that you would find in a good class hotel.
We used the hotel to explore the everglades area so only returned to sleep and relax in the evenings.
In the main lobby and open most days, is a small local tours company that can arrange, manatee, air-boat, swamp buggy trip etc.
If the bar had been open for an evening drink and chill I would have given this a 5 star review. I have also post some pictures so that you can see for yourself. I notice that someone has posted a few pictures of bad electrical fittings ? not really sure where these were taken because I certainly didn't see anything like this in the hotel ??

We took this trip primary for birding, and it was a fantastic location to go out and see the waterbirds of the area. The resort does not have a restaurant, but has a kitchenette so that you can either do some shopping in Naples and home cooking, or you can go into Everglades City for many dining opportunities. There were several tours offered from the marina and we took two, one was an islands tour, complete with dolphin and manatee sitings. My son and husband also took a kayak river trip and saw much wildlife including alligators. Even in December the mosquitoes on trails and near any standing water were annoying, but in the harbor no mosquito problem. The fish are unbelievable and plentiful. The price is right for an extended stay here. There is a gym and game room which we enjoyed.

Room Tip: Closer to the main building, or in the main building probably preferable, but it is all quiet and co...

We stayed for 2 nights while visiting the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. The mamager was helpful and changed our room for In the main building to a room closer to the water when we arrived. The room was fine, quiet with an efficiency kitchen. It is a good location for kayaking and trips into Big Cypress Swamp. We got a discount for staying 3 nights and this location was much better for us than Everglades City. The drawback is that there are no restaurants or anything else close by. We drove into Marco Island and Everglades City for dinner. So if you are wanting some nightlife this is not the place to stay. It is a good location for day trips many are arranged through the resort or check with Big Cypress Swamp for free ranger led trips. Otherwise it is very very quiet, and a drive to find food and/ or entertainment.

Stayed here with my wife in May 2011, we had a studio double room which was fairly big and nice and clean. Seemed to have the hotel and pool to ourselves which was good. Not to far from Naples. Staff were very helpfull. Enjoyed our 2 nights here. We ate out at night but got our own breakfast items for eating in the room. This is a great place if like your own space and you have Naples nearby if you need something more lively. Did not see that many bugs around the hotel to say that is on the edge of the everglades.

Be sure to bring your own food because there is no restaurant, staff is unfriendly, No Lounge, No security, No front desk after 5:00P.M. The pool is antiquated. The good this is that the Fire Department lives on site and had to hear the Fire Trucks come and go throughout the night. And, since there is no one to call and no room service; this family trip was a complete disaster. We are in the process of disputing the charges with American Express because the false advertisement on there web site.

Room Tip: Drive the extra few miles and stay in Naples. This place is a dump
