After an enormous amount of research my fiancé and I decided on the Laplaya over the Ritz Carlton and the Waldorf Astoria for our baby moon when I was 8 months pregnant. The main reason we chose this resort was because the reviews were great, the hotel had awards, and it was possible to have a room that was oceanfront and not need a ride to the beach or a 10 minute walk to the beach like some of the other resorts.
When we arrived, we asked for a nice view and the front desk person giggled and told us we have and excellent view.
When we reached the room our bags had already been delivered by the bellman and he was no where to be found. Now that's service! We open our door and almost fell down when we saw the view. There where 2 sets of double all glass French doors and when you open them, you are immediatly on your patio and about 10 steps from the beach. It was amazing on so handy! The best part was that you could see the water and the ocean and sunset fron laying down in the very comfy bed. It was so beautiful.
The room was very pretty. The food at the main restaurant was a bit pricey and not that great. The valet personal where some of the best I've ever been attended by giving us great tips and pointers about where to eat breakfast and dinner. The front desk employees were so nice.
When you go out n the beach, an attendant brings your chairs and umbrella with a table to wherever you want to sit! The cold towels delivered beachside, ice water, and the beach waiter were a great touch. ( Especially for a pregnant lady!).
The beach was not very busy at all and was just beautiful.
The room was beautiful with a very large sitting area and couch, mini fridge and drawer full of goodies if you wanna pay for snacks. We brought some food and snacks also. The only problem was that there was a definite ant problem in the room. They were all over the desk close to the mini fridge everyday. The other minor mishap was when I fell coming out onto our patio which was wet after a rain shower and hurt my knee very badly and a bit of a scare being pregnant and all. It was parly the hotels fault because they didn't have a mat outside the door, but the managers of the hotel were very nice, brought me ice, called to check on me and even emailed me when I got home to see how I was feeling.
The spa was very expensive so we did not partake in the services even though we normally do a massage when on vacation.
Overall it was a great hotel, very nice staff and the beauty of our room and view far exceeded any minor issues.
Go with the first floor oceanfront if you can, you won't be disappointed. In fact, it definitely will exceed your expectations when you see it in person. and, the customer service overall exceeded many 5 star hotels we have visited. It is absolutely perfect for couples and golf buffs. That being said, I did not see many children.
First floor, ocean front was amazing view, and so handy to get to and from the beach to your bedroom...
