We arrived early on a Sunday as we have gone later in visits past to find the place swamped with no seating available. This small cafe is in the Target Shopping Plaza on Pine Ridge and 41, tucked away where if you were not looking for it you may never find it.
As we entered having had a previous experience we knew the routine of filing through the tables that are uncomfortably close to each other to wait in line to place our order. I don't drink coffee often but when I do I certainly enjoy it and Sunburst has some nice coffee selections. This morning I decided upon an omelet with asparagus, onions, portobello, and cheese with a side of fruit. My partner ordered the Sunburst Skillet. Again having been there before we knew to grab our silverware as we headed to our table to have a seat.
As we waited we people watched and nibbled on one of their gigantic muffins (banana & chocolate chip). The Muffins have a nice flavor however they are dense and occasionally the ingredients ie chocolate chips are not throughout but rest on the top only more as decoration. The place was filled with young families and children at that time. It was clear many of them were regulars as the gentleman behind counter (owner) knew many of their names and orders before they even made their way to the counter.
Food is brought out using a name calling system. This is one area Sunburst could use some improvements. Whether they use a table top sign/number they give you as places like Panera or just get a young lady with a little more loud voice. The place is by no means quite, so as the young lady who was carrying food walked around quietly saying the name on the ticket people often did not hear her so she wondered around inside and outside continuing her gentle name calling.
We we on the look out for our food so stopped her as she walked by. My dish looked wonderful just as I ordered, the accompaning fruit was of a nice selection (very tropical) and a reasonable portion. The Omelet looked delicious. My partner was a little surprised that a skillet did not have any sort of potato. The dish appeared to be more of a scramble with all the ingredients scrambled some eggs.
Taking our first bites we were reminded that Sunburst does not season their dishes which I guess makes sense for the operation they are running with the varied Naples clientele. We found salt and pepper on our table and sure enough a few twists later the flavors all jumped and the meal was very enjoyable. For such quality food and home baked goods it is always disappointing to find such cheep cardboard like bread that accompanies dishes. In spite of it being buttered and toasted I couldn't help but think we are eating wonderbread.
In short if you enjoy a truly local experience at a small cafe I strongly recommend stopping by Sunburst. Great people watching opportunities but be aware the place is regularly packed especially on Sunday's after Church.
