“Nice place, good food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

Service was good and the chef was friendly. The food was delicious but the steak was perfect. The chef cooks at our table with the usual show of tricks. It was very particular the fiery volcano of onion. Nice! The staff could be a little more helpful to explain the menu.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

We are Naples residents and have gone to DaRuMa for pretty much every birthday in our house for over 10 years. Until recently, it was typically a good experience. The last 2 times we have been, however, have been quite disappointing. First, i will say that the manager has a serious attitude problem and is NOT welcoming or nice at all. Seems to feel that customers are an inconvenience. When I made the reservation for my daughter's 17th birthday, I indicated that it was a birthday and that we'd be ordering the birthday package they have offered for years. Upon being seated, I let my server know that we needed the birthday package added on and he told us "no birthday packages tonight" because the manager said so. He said he'd "try to get her to do it" but not to expect anything. He later came back to tell us "she wouldn't budge." Seriously? you're not allowing us to PAY YOU MORE $$ for a happy birthday hat, dessert and song that IS ON THE MENU and that we have done 4 X a year for the last 10?? In addition, our chef was as boring as could be. Would have had more flair and entertainment cooking at my own stove. On a good note, our servers were good and the food was good. Think we're done with DaRuMa.

“Rushed, Rude, and Ridiculous!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2014

Recently we had dinner with family friends who we hadn’t seen in over 10 years. One was celebrating her birthday. We also had 5 kids between the group, one who is only one years old.

We arrived early even though we had a reservation at 5pm to ensure we could get the baby’s high chair set up and get everyone settled. The hostess was not pleasant in the way she greeted us (not a smile, high or welcome, just a sour look!!), nor the way she stated she wouldn’t seat us until whole party was there even though we filled the entire table (so obviously no other groups would be waiting on us, just our own). Meanwhile the only other table occupied there was allowed to be seated small group by small group at a time until the table filled up and they started cooking. So seems to me due to the lack of crowd and the fact that we were our own table and no one relying on us, we should have been seated. Plus 12 out of 13 of us were there, so really? One person you won’t seat us?

Our server was friendly and efficient. However, our chef had none of the usual flair a hibachi chef usually has. No showmanship, no interacting with us. We have been to many hibachi restaurants in our travels and picked Da Ru Ma because we thought the kids would enjoy the show, but nothing really happened and we were all disappointed.

Then the food came. The prices were the same as others we have been to, but the portions of meat (shrimp, filet mignon, etc) were sooo small that it didn’t seem to warrant the hefty price tag. We were also disappointed that we had announced to the server that it was our friend’s birthday that day and nothing was done for her – no dessert, no singing Happy Birthday, not even WISHING a happy birthday. We also wanted to finish our drinks and continue our conversations but once we finished eating our food we were being pressured to leave. They didn’t even ASK if we wanted dessert (which we all did want).

I wanted to go here for my birthday in 2 weeks and had even made a reservation, but after this experience will be canceling that reservation and going elsewhere. I am a 13 year resident of Naples, so I can definitely recommend some much better places to eat where they will appreciate your business and make you feel welcome (even in “season”)!

“fiery volcano”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2014

Made reservations for a Sat. night. Great atmosphere with a piano bar. Seated with strangers. The chef cooks at your table with the usual show of tricks and of course, the fiery volcano of onion. The staff was great and the food was delicious and plentiful. Highly recommended and will come back for sushi at a later time.
