Apparently, my last review of the Village Antique Mall was TOO glowing as I see now, it was never published. They are not relatives or friends. Just great storekeepers: The competition: Rettinger's is only open weekends....the Village Antique Mall is open, pretty much, ALL the time. "Laura & Guy" are an adorable (what I call) 'Hippie Couple' that do a great job running this great "little?"( see other review) Antique Co-op. It's an old food market store (10,000+ sq. ft.!) converted to booth after booth of Antiques blessed with Air Conditioning (Rettinger's Antique Extravaganza's are for the most part all OUTSIDE, while the big building houses the 'regular' tenant Antique Shop Keepers. ). This building houses, what seems like 200 booths, owned by 190(?) different people and vendors. I have been shopping / buying there since 1998, way before, I even moved to town in 2001. I personally think they have the best buys and a fabulous selection of just about every kind of antique : furniture, vintage clothing/hats, stain glass, pottery, books, signs, all sorts of glass (Lalique & occasionally Tiffany), EVERY kind of antique or collectible imaginable. Yes, there's always that garage sale junk that creeps in but, nothing like the average alleged "Antique Store" of nowadays. I have purchased MANY of the items for our Museum Gift Shop 'General Store' there and many decor items for our classic cars like Steamer Trunks, Signs, some rare auto options, even birthday / Christmas gifts, mirrors, vintage store displays, antique radios, Cola merchandise, Taxi Driver Caps, and an electric guitar. "Guy" is a talented musician and can counsel your resident Eric ClapTone on buying everything from a used guitar to lava lamp and save you a fortune. "Laura" is a qualified Jewelry Expert and has vast knowledge of many antiques as well. I see her at estate sales and auctions in Mount Dora skillfully buying treasures all the time.
Ladies, check your bags at the entrance into a personal locker- pilfering is always a problem at any better Antique Store and these folks work way too hard to loose it to a common thief. I'd say Best Antique Store within 50 miles ~ decent prices, great selection. Despite the fact they have been "too busy" for 11 years to visit our business practically across the street...I give them a hearty 'Thumbs Up" !
