Overall, I gave Pearl four stars carried solely by the quality of the barbecue. If you're looking for atmosphere with table service, drive thirty miles to Newberry.
Pearl is a restaurant of contradictions: The food is fantastic but it is pretty much a dump. As other reviewers have noted, it is a convenience store with a food counter. They bring your food to your table when it is ready but that's about the extent of the "service".
And cheap it is NOT. They're proud of their food - and rightly so. But they CHARGE you like they're REALLY proud of it. A large pork sandwich with sides will run you ten buck with a drink. Bit it is the BEST barbecue pork sandwich I've ever eaten. A rack of ribs is $24. The wife and I spent fifty bucks on lunch. Granted, we brought a bunch of ribs home with us. And we had beans, fries, cole slaw, and drinks. But if you think that you're going to get out of here on pocket change, forget it.
The baked beans are excellent and, although I am not big on cole slaw, I really like theirs since it is not mayonnaise-based. The fries are pretty generic but, when fresh, they're really good - except that a large order (plenty for two) is five bucks.
So bring your money gun with plenty of ammo!
Before you leave, grab a bag of their stone-ground grits. They're the real thing. And some of their pancake mix. It makes superb pancakes.
So, if your hungry (being rich helps, too), Pearl is the place. We make it a point to stop there when we are in the Micanopy area.
