“Lovely, but not for everyone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2010

We were placed into this hotel last minute by the booking company we had used for our vacation to Miami Beach because the original hotel we had booked (and prepaid for) had lost our reservation and was fully booked. I was very pleased to be relocated to the Richmond as it is located right on the beach with direct beach access, a much better location than our original hotel which would have been two blocks from the beach.

First the positives: The location of this hotel is IDEAL. Not only is this hotel located directly on the beach, but also close to nightlife and shopping. There is a gate with direct beach access. The pool is very nice and warm enough to swim in, even in January. The pool, restaurant, (although we never ate there) and lobby of The Richmond have a very serene, quiet and upscale ambiance. The hotel is a nice looking hotel and is well maintained. The staff was very polite to us. Our room was clean, nicely furnished with extremely comfortable bed with very nice all white bedding, and larger flat screen TV. We were on a corner and our room was totally quiet. Our room was on the 6th floor and overlooked a nicely landscaped private deck. We never heard our neighbors. One huge positive is that you can open the windows in the room we had. All night long all we heard was the sound of crashing waves and the smell of the ocean breeze was very refreshing and made our stay tolerable.

Now the negatives: The first negative is fairly minor. This is an older hotel, so expect older fittings, and plumbing. The water pressure is pretty good until your neighbor flushes, then you get scalded. This happened to me the first day, then you sort of hear it coming and step back to avoid it . All in all, it's to be expected from an older hotel. Even though the bathroom was very old (I'll include a pic) it was also very clean and well kept up, I found it charming.

The second negative is also minor. Being that this hotel is directly on the beach, you would think that they would have beach chairs and umbrellas. They don't. You can however rent them from the Catalina for $10 a chair. The Catalina has their chairs and umbrellas on the beach right when you enter the beach from the Richmond's private gate, even though the Catalina is not directly located on the beach, it is on the opposite side of Collins, across the street from the Richmond.

The third and final negative will only be a negative for some, a positive for others. This is an ALL SMOKING HOTEL. So, if you don't smoke (we don't) and mind the smell of smoke, don't stay here. after the 2nd day of having our windows open, the smell of smoke started to fade. but our first night in our room was like sleeping inside a dirty ashtray. We had booked a non-smoking room for our vacation. When the booking company relocated us to the Richmond our booking stated "non-smoking". The minute we got off the elevator on the sixth floor, the strong odor of cigarettes was present and there was a floor style ashtray with butts in it next to the elevator. I hoped that it was just the hallway, and that our room would be OK. When we entered our room, it was as if someone was smoking in it that minute, the odor was very strong and very thick. We immediately went back down to the front desk and told the man working there that we booked a non-smoking room and were given a smoking room by mistake. He told us that the entire hotel is a smoking hotel, and that there are zero non-smoking rooms. Just to clarify, he told me that they allow smoking in ALL of their rooms and if he moved us there was a good chance it would be the same or even worse. This was a first for me, I have never heard of such a thing. I guess this is a hotel that CATERS TO SMOKERS. So if you don't smoke, and can't tolerate smoke, stay someplace else. If you do smoke, then by all means go here, everything else about our stay was lovely.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Richmond over the weekend and all I can say is thank God we're not high maintenance! I should have known from the outdated website that the hotel was going to be a little outdated, but even that didn't do it justice!

The hotel is small and it appears that only the lobby has been updated since the 50's. The rooms are VERY old - think holes in the sheets, very worn carpet and furniture and a very in need of updating bathroom. The pool as pretty as it looks in the pictures is covered with overgrown palm trees allowing no sun to get through.

I will say that every member of the staff - from front desk to house keeping was extremely nice. It was refreshing to get that type of welcome - especially in South Beach. That and the fact that it's right on the beach, is 3 blocks away from Lincoln Road and surrounded by really nice hotels with great hotel bars is pretty much all I can say positive about the hotel.

If you can get past the staleness of the hotel then the price outweighs the experience. I could not.

I've never heard of paying for a room and being told I didn't have one when I arrived, but this is what happened at the Richmond. We booked this hotel online after several days of searching specifically for an older Art Deco hotel directly on the beach. We arrived at the hotel a few minutes before check-in time and were told we did not have a room in the hotel but they could put us in an apartment across the street. They told us a storm the day before had knock power out on a complete floor and that was the reason. (We talk with guests in the lobby that said it had not rained in days.) 600 miles from home on a Saturday afternoon with no bed to sleep in is not my idea of a vacation. The apartment across the street was actually a block further away from the beach that I would be afraid to come back to at night. The room had a mattress on the floor, no headboard, no end tables and a pitiful 19" TV that didn't work. Needless to say we went back to the desk to complain and ask for our money back but they refused. BTW they were giving the same spill to another couple when we got back to the desk. Fortunantly we were able to contact our booking agent and they handle the situation for us and put us in a better hotel for less money. My advice...stay away.

The remodeled Art Deco buiding is a jewel. This owner operated hotel is a hidden paradise on the ocean. The entire staff was friendly willing to assist with our every need esp the chef of twelve years. If you are looking for personalized professional care in paradise, The Richmond Hotel is it.

We had a great time at the Richmond. Daniel at the front desk was very friendly, the bartender was great, but the hotel is the true star. A great location with beach access, pool, spa and gym. Vintage Miami and very well kept. We have stayed in many hotels in Miami over the years, this is our new favorite we will be back.

After viewing many choices on the internet, we finally chose this hotel because it was on the beach and close to the Lincoln Road Mall, Ocean Blvd. and other attractions. Plus, the price was better than the others. We booked a standard room, which was more than sufficient. It was very clean, great bed and bedding, good closet space, and the overall staff was courteous and helpful . It was an older hotel which the hallways revealed, but the rooms, exercise area, cafe, pool area, outside grounds were all wonderfully kept. The only downside was a $35 per day parking fee, but that is fairly common for that area and any hotel. We truly enjoyed the fact that we could walk out the back of the hotel gounds gate and be on the Beach Walk and then over a boardwalk and be on the beach. We would definitely go back to The Richmond!

I am a very experienced traveler and I can tell you that this is a very nice hotel on South Beach. Keep in mind that dollar for dollar South Beach hotels are not as nice as other hotels because you are paying for the location not just the property. Don’t expect your room to look like the Weston or Hyatt that you paid a similar price for in Pittsburgh or Detroit. That being said this is still a very nice hotel and we had a great stay at the Richmond. I have stayed at several other South Beach hotels and this is probably the best value on South Beach, this is the hotel that I plan staying again the next time I visit South Beach.
The hotel offers a very nice breakfast and lunch menu with small snacks and bar service in the evening. Dinner is as easy as walking a block or two to many nearby restaurants and you can walk to Walgreens within a few minutes and purchase any food, alcohol or personal items that you may need.
The hotel is certainly Art Deco and has a neat retro flare. The grounds are meticulously maintained and the pool area is super clean and very private. The property is privately owned and I seen one of the owners dining while I was having lunch one day. A very rare occurrence in today’s world of corporate hotels and you will appreciate the family owned touch when you visit this property.
