“Paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2010

We just got back from Miami with a group of High School students on their winter vacation. We stayed at South Seas and we could not have asked for a better hotel. The staff was very helpful, rooms were clean, the breakfast and food at the poolside bar was great and you can't ask for a better location. The Miami beach boardwalk is right behind the hotel and is great for walking or running. Beyond that is the beach, which was great to stay in a hotel so close. The students enjoyed their time very much. The hotel is one block from Lincoln Road, where you have tons of shopping. Two nights we went into Miami, and the bus stop was right across the street. For adults and kids this hotel is highly recommended.

Frankly, having read the online reviews and ratings on such sites as Expedia, in addition to TripAdvisor, I was dubious about whether South Seas is truly a 4 star property as self described. However, having stayed here 4 nights in Room 435 (Ocean Front, King Size bed) and sampled their restaurant, I can state without hesitation that "within the context of South Beach standards" South Seas is a solid 4 star hotel in a prime location.

I booked South Seas through Travelocity's Top Secret Hotel program, so I didn't learn the identity of the hotel until after my booking was made. Hence the research and skepticism as to whether this was in fact a 4 star hotel as Travelocity described.

My room, while small - typical, though of older South Beach properties, is well proportioned, with, being a corner room, large window expanses facing directly on the ocean as well as south. It appears freshly painted and both room and bathroom, also on the small side, but with a full tub/shower, are very clean and show absolutely no sign of mildew or odor, as reflected in some previous comments. (It should be noted that the South Seas is part of the Atlantic Stars hotel group - www.atlanticstars.com ). I arrived late, coming from Los Angeles, and was promptly checked in and informed of my upgrade. Though it was midnight, there was also someone available to help with my luggage.

The pool is very clean and the pool area nice, with a direct connection to the beach and boardwalk.

The food in their outdoor restaurant is excellent (do NOT make the mistake of dining across Collins Avenue at 24 hour Maxine's, which is quite mediocre - South Seas restaurant is far, far better). The small, but nice, bar is open until midnight, while food is served up until 9 PM. The free breakfast buffet is open until 10:30 AM and more than adequate, and the hotel's free wi-fi, is a welcome service in all rooms and public areas (and, from my own experience, quite fast).

Service at the restaurant and bar is welcoming and professional. I did not have reason to engage the front desk staff, other than check-in.

Clearly much effort has gone into upgrading this hotel to a 4 Star property and the results reflect this. (I would suggest avoiding rooms on the 1st floor, as people walking from the hotel entrance to the rear elevator may be noisy and, also to avoid noise issues, suggest not booking rooms facing Collins Avenue).

I stayed here in Feb 2010 with my 15yo daughter on a 4 day winter getaway from the snow back home.

The rooms are old and worn as well as small. The rooms were very clean - but ours smelled fairly moldy - we had to turn the AC down to 60 to get rid of the odor and damp wetness feeling in the room (in dry February!). The bathroom is old. So we were unimpressed.

The common areas were kept very clean and nice. An excellent feature is a strong WiFi signal in the rooms and common areas. The WiFi is free, which is great.

The pool area is the gem at the South Seas. There is a nice bar/cafe (Pilikia by the Pool) which served surprising good fare. The bartenders were attentive and nice - although it seemed like there was always some drama going on talking with the cook. The Pool area is awesome, surrounded by palm trees. Comfy lounge chairs and plenty of towels. The water temp was perfect. There is a sandy area with hammocks to relax in and a small workout room outside. The only negative about the pool was the loud pop music they were playing 24/7. On Sunday morning they were blaring 70s disco.

All in all, I don't think we'll be back to the South Seas. Even though the price was right, the value just wasn't there for me.

Stayed at this hotel in Jan 2010 with my husband for a few days, before travelling on to Key West. This hotel is in a perfect location with easy access to all local attractions, shops, etc etc The back of the hotel has a wonderfully peaceful 'chill out' area with hammocks, four poster bed etc etc and exits almost directly on to Miami beach. The swimming pool was beautiful, very warm and very clean. Plenty of sunbeds and towels etc Weather was excellent - between 74 and 80 farenheit. The room itself was lovely - very clean with maid service every day - no complaints. Staff were friendly and helpful. Apart from breakfast (cold meats, cheese, yoghurts and pastries) did not eat at the hotel as really only suitable for lunch / snacks etc but did eat a couple of times at 'Maxine's' across the road - great food and great service. Overall i would definately recommend this hotel and would happily stay here again in the future.

I stayed at this hotel several years ago and knew that the location was great. Unfortunately when we checked in it was extremely run down. There was a garbage can with food left directly outside our door. The room was old and smelled very musty, The pool area was just okay and does have great access to the beach. We decided that the room was so bad that we checked out after one night. Fortunately the hotel allowed us to check out early without penalty.

The hotel was in a very good location. We had friends staying at the Delano Hotel which was only steps away. The rooms are very small. The bathrooms are extremely tiny and it was tough for even one person to maneuver. There's no place to put any toiletries and the sink faucets didn't work properly, occasionally leaking, and the hot water was hot sometimes. The bed was ok but the mattress wasn't flat and sloped from the foot of the bed down to the head. The restaurant, Pilikia, was good. The girls at the bar were very nice and friendly - the service was excellent. The free buffet breakfast was convenient, but just ok. People are rude and inconsiderate. They walked through the halls stomping and talking loudly at all hours. We could hear the people upstairs clearly through the bathroom grate. We overlooked all of this since we were there to be with friends and weren't in the room that much. Otherwise, I would probably not stay here again.

Location is excellent - by the beach, near Lincoln road. To reach the beach, you walk though the pool area, which is OK.

Service couldn't be worse: front desk staff will barely talk to you - not even a good morning, housekeepers have very loud and long conversations in the hallway, so forget about taking a nap, will be awaken by them or by their radios. This is very basic, it only requires good training and supervision.

Room: very small. There is only a small area around the bed. Closet is good size, but sliding door was not sliding. It was reasonably clean - floor of the the bathroom, for example, had obviously not been cleaned.
