“Comically Horrific”

Doubletree Ocean Point Resort & Spa - Miami Beach North

I went to this hotel with low expectations due to the service I had received in simply trying to book the room and a spa reservation for the one day we would be staying.

Checking in was about the level of service I was expecting (not great). However, I was pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness and appearance of the hotel (I found it to be quite the opposite of the run-down or dirty hotel some previous reviewers have described).

When we began settling in is when the disaster began. The room did not have a balcony, so we decided to lift the window shades so we could actually see our ocean view. THEY WOULDN'T STAY UP! We had to tie the shade strings to a lamp and to chairs to keep the shades open. We then decided to open the windows for some ocean air -- they also WOULDN'T STAY UP! After they all came crashing down (this was not for safety purposes, they were just broken), we had to prop them all open with books. As we opened the ironing board, it too WOULDN'T STAY UP! In 10 minutes, everything we had attempted to use was broken and kept falling down! Thinking we must be on Candid Camera, we decided to just ignore it and go to dinner - after all, we were just going to sleep there and leave after showering the next morning, how bad could it be???

The night's sleep was horrible - my boyfriend's feet were hanging off the bed it was so small. Then our faulty alarm clock kept going off randomly from 4am-5am until we finally had to get up, pull the bed from the wall to reach behind and unplug it.

We had spa appointments the next morning prior to checkout. This isn't a spa review site, so I won't get into it. But, it was one of the most disastrous experiences I've ever had: let's just say it involved, among many other things, a staff member CRYING in the spa locker room.

We had a wonderful time in Miami Beach, but it was completely despite this hotel. It is very safe to say we will NEVER stay there again and would never recommend it to anyone.

“Over-priced and Yucky”

Doubletree Ocean Point Resort & Spa - Miami Beach North

a few things you shold know before you decide to stay here:
i stayed here and paid 275 a night for a one bedroom suite, plus 20 bucks for parking and all i have to say is that it was not worth it. After ariving after 4 am due to airline problems i couldnt go to sleep without doing a bed-bug check, thats how gross the bed looked. to my surprise it was fine. the only thing that was clean (as it should be) was the kitchen. i took a shower with flip-flops on so that my feet would not have to touch the floating pieces of mold. needless to say i couldnt even think of taking a nice relaxing bath. i called the hotel in advance to ask to be placed in a room opposite the construction next door. didnt happen: i had to sleep with earplugs (very romantic) and even then i could still hear it. and i am not a light sleeper i have an 18 month old, i can sleep through all kinds of noise. the only reason i didnt rate the hotel terrible was because of the extremely friendly staff and great service and the fact that having a bedroom and living room was very convenient. i think you should feel comfotable on vacation, and staying in this hotel made me tense- it was just a little too yucky. if it would have been 150 bucks a night that would have been a fair price. (maybe)

never never land

This was our third straight year at the Ocean Point. We were in a two bedroom suite on the 24th floor looking straight out to sea. I keep reading people who have had lousy service but this has never been the case for us. It's always been friendly and prompt. Some people, I believe, just feel more "entitled" then everyone else. These are the same folks who get upset because not everyone in the world speaks English.

Anyway, while we managed to stay this year during a cool spell, still four out of six days were fine on the beach and on the two days that weren't we found other things to do. A highlight on our last night was the fact that we were able to watch the Kansas Jayhawks whip Kansas State on ESPN. Go Hawks!

We'll be back.

This is not the fanciest place in the world (furniture and carpet wise), but who cares. Our suites have always been comfortable and clean.

By the way, if you want a taste of what it is like to be in Israel, I'd suggest a dinner at the Bissaleh Cafe just a few blocks to the north on Collins. It has a huge menu and a more than interesting melieu (there is a word I never use). You'll want to check the hours as they are a little different than most restaurants.

“Dated Hotel with Rude and Inept Service in Nice Location”

We don’t usually write a review unless we have something nice to say, but in this case…

Yes, there is the nice beach-front location, but our stay at the Ocean Point the last week of this past January was marred by the consistently poor service, and often in-your-face rude behavior of the staff, from the front desk (Kathleen, do you what the word
“hospitality” means in the context of the phrase “hospitality industry”?) to the towel/beach hut. As an example, we had one incident on a warm sunny afternoon in which the team of 3 people “working” at the towel/beach hut absolutely refused to give us towels at 4:30pm, even though they close at 5:00pm (which in any case is too early). We thought they were just kidding, but their response to our politely asking a second time was for them to tell us they were “busy doing paperwork” and could not give out any more towels, even though they admitted to having clean towels in the hut. Inexplicably, they suggested that the people in the spa (back in the hotel) might give us a towel (they did). Absolutely incredible! But, incredible or not, with the exception of a few employees, this was the norm for the Ocean Point. We are really surprised that some have given this hotel a positive review. For $200+ per night, we expected better.

A few general comments: an umbrella and a pair of chairs will run you about $25 or $30 for the day; your room has about a 50% chance of being serviced, and the maid will forget to restock 50% of the items needing to be restocked (e.g., tea bags, another coffee filter, more soap, clean towels, etc.); if one of the staff doesn’t know the answer to a question, they will say “I don’t know” (period), and not “I don’t know, but let me see if I can find someone who does”; there is ongoing construction nearby; the rooms are dated, as is the hotel in general, though there are signs of some effort to update the common areas; the free apples were good.

My wife and I cancelled reservations at another hotel in the Miami area because of the Trip Advisor reviews and booked into the Ocean Point Resort. What a great choice! The ocean front room that we reserved was actually 2 bedrooms and 2.5 baths! The room is just beautiful and the view is perfect (I'm writing this as I'm sitting in the living room watching the sun rise over the ocean). You won't go wrong staying here.
