“Location was great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

The location was great for us. It was right on Ocean Drive across from Lummus Park and the beach. But it was also quiet at night and low key. Easy walk to anywhere in South Beach. You have to walk through the restaurant to get to the lobby and elevator which is a little inconvenient. The staff wasn't overly helpful but they were friendly. Not alot of info on the facility or the area volunteered at check in. When we asked for extra blankets, the staff got our room number, but never sent the blankets. The room was very basic. Got a handicap room for some reason. The bed was very comfortable.

“My place for Miami”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

I like this hotel as it is on Miami South Beach! You can walk everything here and even walk to av espana and lincoln road. Starbucks is around the corner. Nice to sit outside and enjoy the view. Staff is friendly. I love the art deco style. The room is not too large and basic however I am not all day in the room so its ok for me. This place is more for tourists than for business travellers. Price is not so cheap but ok compared to other hotels on south beach. I also stayed at different hotels in Miami near South Beach and I disliked those a lot. btw via some booking sites you may actually get a good deal on the room.

“Just an okay place, lacking many amenities”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

The room was tiny is the most striking impression, and totally lacking in electrical outlets. You have to unplug something on the opposite side of the room to plug in your computer and/or phone. Bathroom has barely space to stand, and nowhere to put any toiletries, though the shower in my room (408) was actually decent-sized with nice water pressure. Only a double bed, and not a terribly comfortable one. Not up to Marriott standards at all. The only dresser (a quite small one) was shoved inside the closet and there's no coffee/tea service at all.

Most amazingly, there's nowhere to get ice. It has to be delivered from the bar downstairs. C'mon, Marriott, you can't find a place to put a freakin' ice machine somewhere in this hotel?????

Location is great, though, on Ocean and 14th, right across from the beach and with plenty to do nearby, especially if eating and drinking is what you like to do. Staff I encountered were quite friendly, though I didn't have too much interaction. One elevator, quite small, serves the whole hotel, and broke down when I was there.

And, as others have noted, the TV didn't function too well. Why should that remain a problem???

“Art Deco Hotel Interesting Building, good staff but lacks amenities and has some problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

Just returned from a business trip to Miami Beach. The Winterhaven is one of the "original" 1920s and 30's Art Deco style hotels that Miami Beach is famous for. Out door restaurant and expansive awnings greet you on arrival along with granite steps with the engraved round Hotel Winterhaven logo. Lobby is small/restaurant/registration is very small- but is made to appear bigger by the two story ceiling and and walls on three sides that are all window. It really is like stepping back in time- the lobby is preserved- rather than restored or updated- for preservationists this is a dream- but it does create some problems- like having the refrigerated wine racks for the restaurants right beside check in at lobby (mars the display of the art deco hotel).
Lobby itself was not what I would call nice- but certainly preserved the art deco look of the 1920s. I could be prodded into saying it was charming- but my view right now is that it simply looked dated.

Staff was very nice at check in- restaurant was okay for breakfast- I had free continental breakfast coupon- which was good for a very small danish of indistince origin and a cup of coffee. Sorry but I need my protein and had a $ 24 per morning breakfast of scrambled eggs and ham with no discount for my coupon. A real rip off- but I was to lazy to try to find an alternative in a day filled with busy meetings etc. This is not a good value in my view.

Elevator also preserved from the 1920s, apparently in 1920s it was acceptable for elevators to take 8-10 minutes to go from the first floor to the sixth and back- but perhaps I need to learn patience. Corridors to sleepy rooms were carpeted with dull brown reddish carpet.

Rooms did not have the usual Marriott style set up for business- desk with mutliple plug ins for Iphone, IPad, computer and my usual array of electronics. So I had to plug things in at a recepticle below the small working desk (unplugging a lamp and something else) and also in the bathroom. Room was sized like a Euro room- thank goodness I had a corner room with four windows. Closet was a surprise- large and spacious. Bathroom small even bby European standards.

Room HVAC when running would occasionally sound like a workman was in it with a jack hammer- this occured at three or four in the morning- fortunately I had my ear plugs with me. Made me wonder if the HVAC system was from 1929 as well.

Gym, given the age of this hotel, is non existent- however one can get a daily gym pass to Crunch gym about three blocks away. At the price of my room they should throw this in free. There is a running path on the boardwalk across the street- but for non runners like me you have to pay the $ 11/day.

At $ 299 per night I don't consider this hotel a decent value- the location however is great and it is convenient to the convention center.

I like older hotels especially those that preserve the flavor of the times but this is not Marriott's best effort- perhaps they are constrained by preservation laws- but one would think that they would upgrade the rooms and bring this hotel into the 21st century. The location does not outweight the super location in my opinion.

Important Disclaimer: This review is not intended to be a comprehensive statement about the quality or the experience that the establishment offers to customers. The reader should keep in mind that this posted review reflects this one reviewer's experience on a particular day(s)/evening(s) (or during the time period given) and is based somewhat on subjective factors that influence any customer's perception. The experience that others might have could, and probably will, differ markedly from what is written here based on many factors including both preferences, tastes, and price relative to perceived value delivered (the weighting of such factors will vary widely for each person). What is written above is simply this reviewer's opinion of the establishment on that particular day(s), evening(s) or time period shown and may not reflect the quality, service or other characteristics of this establishment on any other given day(s), evening(s) or time period. Therefore another customer’s experience may differ substantially from the one given in this review. Any decision about whether to do business with the reviewed establishment, or any establishment, should be based on a number of factors including taste, experience, price, other reviews posted on Trip Advisor, professionally written guide books, tour reviews, recommendations of friends and colleagues, and the advice of professional travel agents. The decision to patronize an establishment (or not patronize one), including the one reviewed above, should not be based on any one source whose views may be subjective (such as this one). Additionally the number of reviews given by this particular reviewer should not be factored into a decision to patronize or not patronize this establishment. It is important to note that Trip Advisor "awards" reviewers with star types (in the case a gold star) and descriptors (in this case the moniker “Top Contributor”) based SOLEY on the number of reviews posted by a reviewer. Reviewers have no decision on the type of “Star” awarded to them (in this case of this reviewer a gold star) or the moniker given to the reviewer (such as “Top Contributor” for example). These monikers and star types are given to reviewers by Trip Advisor automatically based on the number of reviews posted. Thus a Trip Advisor reviewer’s star type or description have not been not earned in any way by this reviewer, or any other Trip Advisor reviewer, other than by the number of reviews posted by a reviewer. Obviously just because someone posts a large number of reviews does not make the reviewer particularly qualified and, as such, this particular reviewer does not claim any expertise in rating establishments for quality and service or suitability and/or for recommending (or not recommending) patronage of an establishment . It is probable, and likely, that other reviewers, with far fewer number of Trip Advisor posted reviews than this reviewer, are more experienced, or may have under taken special training than the writer of this review. Therefore other Trip Advisor reviewers are probably better qualified to rate or recommend establishments for patronage than this particular reviewer. To summarize this review, and any and all reviews written by this reviewer and posted on Trip Advisor, should not be used to select any establishment for patronage and are simply written for entertainment purposes only.

Room Tip: Get a corner room if you do not want to feel claustriphobic

“Clean, good location but tiny spartan rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

The location is great but there is no pool or room service. The rooms was clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food is borderline. Overall it was OK for a business trip with no leisure time but would not go to Miami Beach for fun and stay there.
