Probably a little overpriced but navigating the Miami Beach hotel scene can be a minefield.
It seems you get either the super expensive high-end resorts or total dives - finding good value in a mid-price hotel is very hard. The Catalina is a semi-renovated older property on Collins Avenue at 17th (1 block from the beach).
The good: great location - very close to beach and the wonderful Lincoln Rd pedestrian Mall, hip lounge and bar area, and nice patio restaurant. The eggs bene was huge & hearty and the fresh squeezed OJ was very good. Beds were very good -TempurPedic mattresses. Nice pool area.
The bad: dimly lit hallways and thin walls, somewhat musty smell in hallway. Overpriced smallish rooms, bathroom could use up-dating. Rooms in general need updating.
To be fair I was there in high-season and during the BCS (college football championship) so everywhere was expensive that week. Not a bad place but still looking for better value on South Beach.
