“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2012

We stayed in the hotel for one night in transit from London to Costa Rica.  After a long and tiring flight from London the hotel staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful.  The rooms were spotless and beds extremely comfortable.Special thanks must go to Tyrell Yerby the Concierge who was a mine of information on where to go and what to do.  Thanks Tyrell!  Happy hour was also great. The fact that we have just booked for two further stays says it all!

Room Tip: Higher floorsare better!

Good Afternoon John,

Thank you so much for taking your time to post your wonderful feedback on Trip Advisor for all of our future guests to read. I am extremely glad to read that you had a good time while staying with us! The beds that we have here are Tempur- Pedic and they are absolutely amazing! All of our guests have nothing but good things to say about them and how good they sleep. I am also glad to hear that you were assisted by Tyrell and that you got to have some drinks during our complimentary cocktail hour from 7-8PM. We hope to have you stay with us again soon!

Kind Regards,

Katrine

As a meeting planner I am very particular when it comes to hotels. I found the Catalina to be in a perfect location near the convention center. The pool on the rooftop was fabulous as was the bar and restaurants. We were in a very nice suite that overlooked Collins Avenue. I enjoyed the boutique hotel feel and the fact that I did not have to walk for miles to get to my room.

Room Tip: Definitely get a suite.

Good Afternoon Judy,

Thank you so much for taking your time to post your wonderful feedback on Trip Advisor for all of our future guests to read. Glad to read that you enjoyed the hotel and what we have to offer! :) A lot of the guests that we have staying here love our location as well since it is so close to the convention center and just steps away from many other great restaurants, bards, stores, attractions, etc. When will we be having you stay with us again?

Have a wonderful day!

Kind Regards,

Katrine

We recently stayed at The Catalina for three night during the Sobe Wine & Food Fest. We stayed in The Dorset Building in a B room. Our room was clean had plenty of space and the bed was great (The website clearly tells you the size differences in the rooms, so it is important to check before booking). The location of the hotel is also very convenient to Linoln Rd and many other hotels, shopping and nightlife.
One should keep in mind this is quirky boutique hotel and not a luxury resort, but that being said, there were quite a few amenities at a very reasonable price. Although we did not take advantage of it, there is a nioghtly happy hour in the three bars. The hotel also offers free wifi, bike rentals, beach chairs and towels. This is included in the $15 a day resort fee. This is extremely cheap compared to many other hotels in the area. We did eat at Maxine's, the food was very decent, large portions and very reasonably priced (an 18% gratuity is added to all bills, as it is everywhere is SOBE). We did not eat at Kung Fu, but did have a few cocktails after returning from our events. The bartender was very friendly and poured a great drink.
The most pleasant part of our stay however was the rooftop pool and the staff. Robert was by far the most personable helpful staff member I have come across anywhere . He went out of his way to make sure everyone was comfortable and happy. He was quick to clean up anything that people dropped or discarded, was always making sure guests had fresh cold water and towels. Anything anyone asked for he did his best to make happen. Robert was also very funny and made our time at the pool very enjoyable. He is an exceptional staff member. I would also like to say how great Steve and Diana at the rooftop pool were. Both were quick with drinks, food or anything else you needed. Both also were fun and made sure everyone was having a good time. This staff was what really made our stay great.
We will definately be staying here again in the future.

Room Tip: Check the website to choose a room, they tell you the sizes it should be no surprise how big or smal...

This is the fourth hotel I have stayed at in South Beach and it was by far the worst. Luckily we were only staying here for one night because the hotel (I would call it a hostel) was horrible. The rooms are shoe-boxes and reminded me of a strange retro looking brothel. There were stains on the sheets and very poor lighting. The bedroom lights consisted of 2 bedside reading lights (size of a flashlight) and a red cylinder pendant light that was basically useless. The service was also pretty horrendous. After calling/visiting the front desk to request towels for the fourth time, we finally gave up and used our beach towels. The only positives about this hotel are the location (though it is NOT on the beach) and access to nearby rooftop pools. There are other places you can stay in South Beach if you are on a budget. I definitely recommend looking somewhere else.

Good Afternoon,

Thank you so much for taking your time to post your honest feedback on Trip Advisor for all of our future guests to read. I am sorry to hear that you did not have an amazing experience while staying with us! We have several different size rooms to accommodate every guest. To me it sounds like to could have used a room that was a bit larger in size. In regards to the lighting, we are working on adding more lighting to the rooms. It is constructive feedback such as yours that allows us to make the necessary changes we need to, in order to make The Catalina a better and more enjoyable place for our guests. I would love to offer you a complimentary 1 night stay to use in the future so you can come back and experience the hotel without any kind of issue or inconvenience. Please contact me personally(catalinamarketing@southbeachgroup.com) and I will send you a gift certificate immediately.

Have an amazing day!

Kind Regards,

Katrine

All I have to say is... If you want the Loews, stay there! And dont complain about this hotel at all. Me and my girlfriend stayed here for The South Beach Wine and Food Festival. This place was great! And I have stayed at the other High class places before. The people here were down to earth and very respectful! You treat them nice and you will get the same back. Upon check in the staff at the front desk was great and respectful.
Now let me begin with the rooms: We got the B-room which was perfect in size! We suggest getting that room. The decor was great, bed was awesome, and turn downservice was on par. The only con was lighting was not the best but oh well. Oh and the shower was the best thing! Just thinking everyday when newly dating couples arrive here, this will make you or break you. So be prepared. Now to shut the haters up.....You have a chioce of rooms with descriptions and sizes. Dont complain about the room especially when you picked the small one and you expect bigger!! They give you the sq footage on their site. Read it!! Also those people who go thru Groupon, Living Social, and those internet discount hotel brokers. Please read the room you are getting or paying for because if you dont clearly know find out so you arent surprised and mad when you arrive. Those sites and companies are known for pulling stuff like that. We directly booked with hotel and got the same price as all those sites.
Now to the restaurants.......You have a choice here of two restaurants. Maxines and Kung Fu. Maxines was great! Food was awesome and their burgers are pretty damn good!! And for the first timers to SoBe, every food establishment charges an 18% gratuity, so get used to it. Kung Fu was average with their sushi. Nothing crazy. I eat alot of sushi and Nobu is down the block so go there and you"ll be happier. Now to shut the haters up.... This is not the Setai or Ritz so if you want 5 star food go there! But Maxines was a 3.5 outta 5 and Kung fu was 2.5 outta 5. But I also kept in my mind that there are alot of places in SoBe to eat. I could have went to those places instead and not continued to eat here and then complain about it.
Now to the pools.....We were at the rooftop pool all day long! It was great!! A lil small but it was awesome because not everyone and their kids were in it. It is mostly adults there. Most families walked across the street to the beach. The staff here were phenomenal! Robert is the man! He sets your day bed up, get drinks and food! He is the one man gang at this pool! Steve and Diana, the bartenders, are great, funny, and very personable. They had no problem making sure everything was perfect!! The whole roof top pool made everything nice and easy. Now to the haters......they post pics of pool on the site and as you can see its not Olympic sized. Yes there are only 11 day beds. So get up at 8 am reserve yours and come back at 11 am and relax. This is procedure anywhere you go. Actually those daybeds would cost you between $100 and $200 a day at the bigger hotels. So wake up and reserve it.
Now to the bar at Kung Fu.....It was awesome, great feeling of being relaxed. Good place to chill out. Drinks were strong and really good. DJ Chris was awesome as well. We nightcapped there every night. Yea the music could be loud especially the rooms over the bar but you are in South Beach. Thats the nightlife here!! You dont sleep here! Party Party Party! Really not more to say about it was there for a drink and back to room to sleep.
Overall this place was great!! Please keep in mind that 3/4 of SoBe is older buildings and some prices have shot up dramatically due to renovations. So if you want a great hotel at great prices stay here and remember dont compare past trips to your other vacations at bigger name hotels cause obviously you looked at those and saw their prices. And decided to save some money and come here. So leave the negativity back where you came from! Just come here with an open mind and you will be fine.

Just got back home from a bachelorette party in Miami, stayed at the Catalina Hotel. The hotel was nice enough, but Robert up at the roof top pool made our trip awesome! He went out of his way to make sure all us girls were having a good time- set aside beds for us at the pool, got us fresh towels, water, and even tried to hook up our ipods so we could listen to our music (system didn't work, not his fault!) Robert even took me on a motorcycle ride around the block and back to the hotel one night when he saw us girls walking back! Robert truly went out of his way to make our stay awesome. Possibly one of the best "service" people I've ever encountered. THANKS ROBERT!!!!
