“Fine, but overpriced.”

Nothing "wrong" with this restaurant, but at $50 pp, without wine, I expected more. I also felt like we were being scammed, as they wouldn't disclose the prices of the specials. The king crab legs appetizer, for instance, was $30pp. The appetitzer platter which they were pushing on us would have been over $150 (for 10 people).

As it was, the atmosphere was nice, food was fine (but not memorable), and I'll definately try somewhere else next time.
(I had the swordfish.)

“better service at Denny's”

I researched dining in Miami for weeks and all reviews I read were good, I was so looking forward to this place, only to be sadly dissapointed. The food was just ok. I enjoy seafood and work in a seafood house, this was no big deal and did'nt seem all that fresh. However the service is horrible, we had to grab the waiter for everything, to order, ask questions, another drink, more water, to clear plates etc. The atmosphere and entertainment were the only thing good about this place, that and the fact that I was on vacation and this experience was not going to ruin my evening, but don't waste your time or money. The following evening we had a great experience at Sushi Samba, it was great!

My wife and I were staying in the Avalon hotel so it made sense to try the restaurant during our stay in Miami (A Fish Called Avalon is located within the front of the hotel.) The restaurant had also been recommended to us and each time we passed through it there were always a good number of people eating there which is normally quite a good sign.

The front area of the restaurant is an ideal place to watch the world go by. There are two eating areas out there, one on the street and another area slightly further back and just away from the street. I wouldn't recommend eating on the tables situated on the street unless you like eating your food while loads of people walk around you. Being in South Beach the area in front of the restaurant gets very busy with numerous people walking past. On the night we ate there a strong wind was blowing so we decided to eat inside. The Inside of the restaurant is very pleasant; quite softly lit with a nice atmosphere that is not too noisy but not deadly quiet either.

The wine list is extensive but also, in my opinion, expensive. We selected a modest bottle of red wine which cost around $60 and that was one or the most cheapest on the menu. I was also slightly disappointed with the size of the menu; it was not large but am aware that generally this means the food being served should be really good.

My wife and I ate three courses and the food for each course was good but not exceptional. The crab cakes we had as starters were of the smallest I've ever had. I also thought the portions of the main courses were not that large.

Despite what previous reviewers have mentioned, we experienced very good service. Our water was regularly refilled when requested, the waitress was attentive and pleasant and we didn't wait long for our food.

Overall, I would rate the restaurant as slightly above average. I've certainly eaten in better and conversely have eaten in much worse. I did think the food was overpriced and if I went back to Miami I would not be put off eating there again but certainly wouldn't make it a priority.

Great people watching on the porch, but overall the food and service are not great. This place seems to be the victim of its own good reviews--it's too busy and seems to have lost any attention to detail. We couldn't get our water glasses refilled despite asking and all the food was bland. Usually tripadvisor reviews are right on, but I have to disagree with the majority on A Fish Called Avalon.

A terrific restaurant - good food, good wine and great service. We were a party of 18 and ate out front - which was nice on a warm night - and great for people watching! Many places are fazed by serving so many at once, but the helpful waiter suggested we have a shared starter platter which was excellent and plenty of each sampler to go round. The mains were excellent - and we were served up to us all in quick succession. I had an immensley enjoyable seafood risotto. Only one word of caution - if you order the Surf 'n' Turf main, be prepared for a mega-portion - big enough to feed an army! I heartily recommend this restaurant if you're in Miami, tho' can't comment on the prices as someone else was footing the bill!
