Recently stayed at the Delores for two nights. Very cute from the outside, with a cheerful porch. The hotel is right on Collins and 14th, so, like all the older hotels in this area, it fronts directly on the sidewalk. Be advised that Collins is undergoing reconstruction, so there is copious dirt and dust. You have to be careful navigating the immediate neighborhood, because the sidewalks are gone in some areas, and there is a lot of sandy mud.
The hotel itself is pleasant enough, but very spartan. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are miniscule. I love the old deco hotels, so I knew what to expect. Be aware that the standard room is a full-sized bed, which is too small for some folks. The room has a fridge, and a safe, but no land-line phone or clock-radio.
The ac was not working when I arrived, and it took some time, but the staff did get it fixed by the time I was ready to crash in my room for the night. The tv remote was also not working, which was a pain, since the tv is located high on the wall. The room was not dirty, so much as worn. The linens were rather threadbare, and the bathroom had a lot of cracked tile. But water pressure was good, and bath amenities are provided. The hotel was very quiet, and the staff could not have been nicer, friendly and helpful. Since this hotel is only two floors, it was easy to run in and out during the course of the day. I also felt safe here. This is a great neighborhood - steps to Lummus Park, Espanola Way, and Lincoln Road. It would be nice if they offered morning coffee in the lobby, rather than a plug-in pot in the room. Although they do put out muffins at some point, I think it would get the guests interacting a bit, which is always pleasant.
In one previous review, someone mentioned the haunted glass shelf in the bathroom. I have to say that the shelf, loaded with bath items, is unfortunately placed just at shoulder height, so don't stumble into your bathroom half-asleep.
Like most hotels in SOBE, you need to book well in advance to get an affordable rate. If you are looking for location, convenience, and a simple place to make your base, without spending a fortune, this is an acceptable place.
