“Perfect quiet hostel in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2011

If you're looking for great budget accomodations in expensive South Beach, this place is it. We booked 2 beds in a 4-bed all-female dorm with an ensuite bathroom for Dec 25-28. It was around $25 per night after taxes and there is a 10% discount if you book on their site.

When we arrived around 8pm, our beds weren't available for that night and we got a private room at no extra charge, which was great. The only downside was that it faced the courtyard and was on the first floor, so it was a bit loud until 10pm when people were hanging out talking there and in the morning when others were eating and hanging out. I would definitely recommend rooms facing away from the courtyard/pool area and/or on the second or third floor.

The next day, we moved into a 4-bed dorm with a private bathroom. It was facing away from the courtyard and we got great sleep. Sheets were clean and the bathroom had a great hot shower. There is also a kitchen in the courtyard area, a computer with free internet in the lobby, and a laundry room. We used all of the above and were very satisfied.

The staff doesn't have a lot of information on the public transportation options, but the hostel is very well located to all of them. So I would recommend looking things up online if you want to save a lot of money. Most buses stop a block away on Washington Ave. We took the $2.35 #150 bus to and from the airport (Concourse E). We also took 2 buses to/from Little Havana/Versaille Restaurant (#120 to #8 for $2 with a free transfer when using the Easy pass metro card). Otherwise, everything is within easy walking distance.

For inexpensive breakfast and lunch, head to Playa Cafe on Washington Ave around the corner.

This isn't a party hostel and there are definitely a lot of families and older folks staying here. So if you're looking for a big party, I'd head elsewhere. If you want cheap quiet clean accomodations in the center of it all, then this is what you're looking for.

p.s. The staff should fix some of the broken blinds covering windows of first floor rooms to provide enough privacy. But that's really our only gripe.

South Beach can be very expensive. This hotel/hostel is very reasonable and the quality is very good. Rooms are spacious, with big windows. Beds are comfortable. Hotel is centrally located yet rooms are quiet. Staff are very pleasant and helpful (big thanks to Joel and Jonathan for being so nice). There's a pool/lounge area in back, with a nice outdoor kitchen (gas flames). A five-minute walk from beautiful beaches. Jerry's deli, Washington Street restaurants, grocery stores very convenient. Very short walk to high-end stores and to Lincoln Road.

The atmosphere is amazingly friendly. You'll meet nice people if you want to This pleasant, practical, affordable hotel/hostel makes beautiful South Beach affordable! Thanks to everyone there and especially Joel and Jonathan!

If you stay at the The Tropics and your expectation is "hostel" - you will be pleased with what you find. There is a pool, rooms with private bathrooms, a friendly staff and a fantastic location. If you are expecting "hotel", you might be disappointed. The rooms are extremely basic but have a bed, shower, toliet, dressers - and little else. The artwork is horrible (in a laughable horrible way) and the shower is nothing to write home about. However, compared to other options on South Beach, we were happy with our stay here.

So I was put off by many reviews on here, so much that I manically tried to find another hotel last minute but failed due to the holiday celebrations that was happening whilst we were there!

I have no proper complaints about this hotel at all! Its set in a perfect location on Collins Ave, 5 mins walk from South Beach, walking distance to every club we needed to go to, slap bang in the between the upper class hotels (with bars/clubs) and the designer shops.

EVERYONE of the staff was friendly, from reception through to housekeeping, and answered all of our questions when asked, even at 4am!

Admittedly, the hotel was dated, especially the bathroom (although the shower had great water pressure and I found it difficult to get out each time), but importantly it was clean, and housekeeping came daily, unless you requested them not to. The bed was comfortable, and once I worked out how to turn off the air conditioning I enjoyed good 'night' sleeps. Extra blankets are available at request (In Miami, yes, I detest air conditioning!)

Communal areas to the front and rear of the hotel, with a large pool, and sun loungers. A BBQ area and kitchen with large fridges for all to use (although we ate out daily).

Would have been nice to have a kettle in the room, but got a fantastic walk in wardrobe instead lol. Rooms are so spacious.

All in all, great value for money. I believe when your on holiday you should be spending minimal time in your hotel anyway, and so this served us perfectly, would stay here again!

I stayed here for my birthday with a friend of mine. We had a minor issue with our card and the hotel staff refused to help even thoug it was THE HOTELS error. Eventually i got the problem resloved. Hotel staff including Joel was very rude apart form one guy who was very nice and helpful. The so-called manager was the rudest of all. The rooms were ant infested and very dirty. I hardly stayed in my room because of this. It is a cheap hotel so you really get what you pay for. I would NEVER recommend anyone to stay at this hotel. If you can pay a little extra and stay across the street or around the corner. This hotel really isnt worth staying at even if you are trying to save.

Stayed here with a group of friends during the Music Conference. The service was friendly and the staff do try and keep the noise down after a certain time so guests can get some sleep if they choose to.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, the bathroom did need updating but everything worked and the shower was warm - take your own towels tho - the ones provided are not great. There was decent wifi in the reception area and a couple of computers with free internet. The pool is fab and there is a decent poolside seating area to chill, drink before heading out and meet fellow residents. Ome of the friendliest places I have stayed although that may have been due to the time of year.
No breakfast included but in this location - that's not a problem. 5 mins from the beach - loads of places to eat and drink nearby including the 24 hours Jerry's Diner. The location and the value for money is unbeatable.
I would definitely stay at the Tropics again.
