“Best value on South Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2009

This is a great old Art Deco hotel right on Collins. About 2 minute walk to beach. Nice big room with full tub. Great pool. Beware these are not modernized rooms and they have room AC not central. For $59 ($79 weekends) maybe best deal. If you're snooty and need "new" everything go to Loews accross the street and pay triple.
I'd go here again.

Stayed here with a few friends. The room was disgusting. It was so dirty, we wore our flip-flops while in the room. The bed was very uncomfortable and the comforter had a huge hole in it. The rooms themselves were damp and empty. Just a bed pushed in the corner and a few old pieces of furniture. The window was broken and would not open so it got really stuffy. The staff was rude and did not help at all. After 2 nights, we moved to a different hotel down the street.

You want to stay in South Beach, but you're not independently wealthy. What do you do? You look up the Tropics Hotel and Hostel on Collins Ave., right across from the Royal Palm and Loews, a couple of places that require an arm and a leg at check-in. The Tropics has private rooms at about $75 per couple (they charge per person, so do the math), and you can stay even cheaper in a dorm room with bunks. No, it's not ON THE WATER, but between the Palm and the Loews across the street is public beach access. Also, it's probably one of the few hostels you'll find with a pool and cabana. You can cook your own meals outside, but don't forsake the great cuisine of Miami Beach - my wife and I ate at a great Peruvian restaurant called Chalan on Washington Ave. There are great restaurants all along Espanola Way as well. If you're a real night owl, go to Mango's. Always a good time at South Beach.

Our stay was suppose to be 3 nights but due to an error by the desk worker gave away our first night reservation .The manager took the 3 of us to another hotel north of there and even though the cost was higher Tropics took care of the cost. The next 2 nights was great! Located perfect on Miami Beach and within walking distant of everything. Price is very affordable and the hotel was fine. Looking forward to next falls visit and will be longer than 3 days for sure!

We had a wonderful stay in this hotel because it is close to everything is South Beach. The good thing also is the price. The best surprise is that there are fridges where you can storage your food and a great place to cook outside close to the pool, which is also very nice and big. It is not expensive and has everything you need if you don't want to spend to much and be well located. Bless

This is an affordable hotel located near Washington avenue for clubs, and espanola way for some good food and a night out. It is 5mins walk to the beach and also has a big pool to cool down in.

We booked into a private room with a queen bed.
It is more comfortable and roomy than the similarly priced Clay Hotel on espanola way.

Stayed in this hostel for 3 nights in September, in a mixed dorm. Room had ensuite bathroom, only reduced rating due to it not having a lock. Room was very clean and spacious, hostel clean and mostly quiet at night besides a rowdy group of young UK/NZ people. Location could not be beat - so close to the beach, very short walk to Lincoln Drive, convenient to Washington and shops, and also very close to Ocean Drive. Amazingly low price for dorm rooms. Right in the Art Deco district.

Tip: if you are travelling as a group book a private room, or as a solo traveler see if other travelers want to share one, as they are a bit nicer than the dorm beds, and when shared, cost about the same.
