“Tropics is overrated.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2008

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Tropics from 7 June to 10 June and we decided to give Tropics a try as it was recommended by Trip Advisor in their PDF brochure about Miami beach and it got quite good reviews from other guests.

However, we were super disappointed with our stay and we felt that it was not worth the money (US$80/nite). Firstly, for the price and the name (they call themselves a hotel), we expected slightly more from them. The towels that we got were thin and old and the blankets were nothing more than just a thin cotton sheet. The room is big no doubt but the bathroom is pretty old.

We are alright with the lack of basic amenities but what we are not very happy about is that we found insects such as ants and cockroaches inside the room, such as along the walls and coming out from the air conditioning. Basic hygiene should be a given esp a place which calls themselves a hotel. And i saw cockroaches throughout my stay there (maybe it's the same few cockroaches).

The staff that checked us in was also not friendly and didn't acknowledge us when we greeted him everytime we leave the place or come back at night. There was no free parking which made parking very very expensive for us each day. (there are other motels or hotels along Collins Ave which offers free parking for their guests).

The hotel's location on Collins Ave is good as it's just a short walk from the South Beach and all the action as well as Lincoln street which is the shopping district.

I guess for a hostel the tropics will be a good place cuz they have a kitchen where everyone can meet and make new friends but definitely it's not good enough to be called a hotel. I think you can pay the same price and get a better room along the other places in Collins Ave but if you're a lone traveller who just wants a bed for the night and to make some new friends, Tropics will prob be a good place for you.

  • Liked — The location, the big room
  • Disliked — The lack of cleaniless, the old rooms, the unfriendly staff we met, the lack of free parking for guest

The first thing you notice in Collins Ave is the amount of 5 stars hotels and in the same street there is Tropics.

Very good value for money. The location is central. 100m from the beach. The swimming pool is enough for swim (when I was there wasn't crowded).

The double room was pretty old. But AC and TV worked fine. The mattress was good. The bathroom was OK. Wifi for free in the lobby.

For the price was OK. Didn't expect better.

  • Liked — Close to the beach, wifi in the loby
  • Disliked — Building a bit old...

Loved the Tropics Hotel.
We had a private room with 3 single beds. The rooms and hotel are styled in the Art Deco period. So Cool.
Although it was hot while we were in Miami, the hotel was a pleaseant temperature and the rooms quietly airconditioned.
Our room overlooked the pool, so it was a little noisy in the evenings, but the pool closes at night, so no all night splashes, which was great.
The staff were friendly and helpful. Internet access was in the lobby only, but there was pleanty of room to sit and check your emails if you have a lap top or there was a PC for $1 per 10 mins.
LOCATION was fantastic... right on Collins Ave and one block from the beach. One block down from Ocean Drive and the South Beach night life.
I was very impressed with the hotel and it's location.

Location: Tropics is in a great location (Collins Ave) lots within walking distance. If you cross Collin Ave your on South Beach!! It's also opposite two v.nice hotels (Loews & The Palms) & beach is well maintained etc. You may want to pack your trainers- everyone runs along the beach.

Lincoln Road is nearby which is full of shops (Victoria Secret, O'neils, Rickys-fab retro wig & hair care shop! etc) & restaurants (all nice ranging from Pizza- sushi) In the evenings people do tend to dress up abit there. Can catch the S Bus ($1.50) from Lincoln Road to Aventura Mall (Mac, Abercrombe, Victoria Secret, Sears etc) & Bal Harbour (designer stores-Chanel, SAKS, LV, Chloe etc).

Hostel/ Hotel: We had a private room, the decor was interesting- fake marble design- bed looked like a tomb! But that's immaterial, the room was very clean (the maid did a fab job every day) Air conditioning was good too. The receptionist's Damien & Mario were v.helpful & offered great advice on where to go etc. The pool was clean too & a nice temp. We didnt use the kitchen but it seemed sufficient, Wallgreens about 5mins away so easy to buy food.

If you can visit: The art gallery on Lincoln & Espanola Way, Delano's (Hotel/bar- fab funky interior design & outdoor pool area's a fun place to go but bring plenty of $$-£25 for 2 double vodkas & cranberry..its also home to a good few posers!) Opium- cool indoor/outdoor club though bouncers can be selective about who/how they let you in (pathetic) Also if you can go to FREEPORT (Bahama Link Cruise £250 1 night stay) FAB GORGEOUS beaches. Can book through any tourist centre or the hostel. But take travel sickness tablets the journey can be ROUGH!!!!!!!
Enjoy!!

I spent last Christmas (12/19-25) in South Beach and it was just incredible. I was staying at the hostel by myself but after the first night I had made almost 10 friends whom all I now after two months miss!

The location is perfect, just 1-2 blocks away from the beach. It's also easy to get to by a public bus from Amtrak Station - no problem even with a bit of luggage.

The rooms are alright, although the first night there was a bit weird about 70 yo. lady with me in the same room but then I actually changed to same room with my new friends. Also, the shower was leaking so the toilet floor was wet all the time.

The backyard was great! The pool and the sunchairs were perfect cure for a hangover before going to the beach. Also, everynight around 6 pm people gathered to cook dinner and drink and one night I just sat there for 9 hours without going elsewhere. :)

South Beach magic combined with the great people in this hostel made my Christmas perfect. I hope it does the same for your vacation.

The hotel was ok, full of young people into partying. It was freezing inside though the weather was HOT!
Everything went fine and we didn´t mind the bugs etc.minor problems except that the last night we were styaing in the hotel someone broke into our room. The lock had been carved from the door and it was clear robbery.
Anyways, the hotel staff weren´t at all helpfull, just regretted they don´t have any observation cameras and gave us a new room for the night since we couldn´t stay inna room without a locking door!

  • Liked — it was realtively cheap

My friend and I stayed here for 10 days in July 2007. It was the best way to start our trip of the east coast, we stayed in a private room which was VERY spacious and had its own walk-in-wardrobe.

We were immediately welcomed by the staff who were more than happy to give us advice on where to go and what to do. We booked various trips through the hostel, all which were very memorable.

Its 2mins walk from the beach and a 5 min walk to lincoln drive, a stones throw away from all the busy bars and restaurants.

We met a lot of fellow travellers and made a lot of friends, everyone was really easy going and the outside kitchen was a perfect place to socialize and meet new people.

The nearby nightlife is amazing, even at 4am in the morning we felt really safe wandering the main streets and there is even a 24 hour diner a few mintues away to satisfy your needs after a good night out.

Were planning on staying here again in summer 2008, we recommend it to everyone. Its a no frills hostel but dont take that to mean its shoddy, we're two high maintenance girls and it was perfectly adequate for us.

Theres no place on earth like Miami. Southbeach is where its at!
