I'm not a South Beach expert but I know value and this isn't it. The location of this hotel is 1.5 blocks off of the beach. Its on 21st street which is a cab fare away from the best nightlife and ocean drive. There is a park across the street where street bums sleep at night. Parking is $35/day. They have recently undergone some renovations but only surface work. The bones of this building are as old as the city itself. Don't be fooled by the pictures on the website. The small lobby looks like a dressed up old Jewish community center. The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything going on with the guests in the room next to you at 4 am when the clubs let out. You can even see the light shining through the entire perimeter of the dividing door. Although they were loud and throwing up, luckily for us it was only 2 friends and not a couple doing something worse. We had ants and sand fleas all inside the room right when we got there. The girl at the desk asked if we wanted to switch rooms but then changed her mind. She tried to wipe the ants off the floor but that didn't help much. The renovations in the SBH are focused around a Miami contemporary high class look. But its done with poor construction. The shower leaks onto the bathroom floor and the hot water wasn't where the knob showed it would be. The floors are sloped. The hallway floors are newly carpeted over a loose and warped subfloor. The carpets look like they're never vacuumed. The entire remodel and painting looks like Harry Homeowner did the work. On the second day we had a major water leak coming through the air vent on the ceiling next to the bathroom. I would have hit the ground hard from slipping on the smooth tiles that were soaking wet if I didn't catch myself on the door knob. They also advertise that they have a pool. The pool is really on the rooftop of The Boulan which is next door, a much nicer hotel who has given SBH guests a pass to use it.
Here's the kicker: The SBH has a convenience store inside your room. When we first got there all we saw was trays of snacks, candy's, hard liquor, Fiji water, asprin, sunblock, prophylactics, bathrobes, sunglasses etc.etc.. all for a price that's about 6 times what it should be. You can't even use the refrigerator because its loaded with beer cans and champagne. There is also a sign that says if you smoke a cigarette in the room you will be charged $150 cleaning fee. Basically a setup for a paying guest who gets drunk. The only thing they could do worse was put a pack of smokes next to the sign. The SBH is a 2 star hotel that wishes it was 4.5 stars. No pool, no restaurant, no fitness center, no frills. The staff was very friendly and helpful but you can tell they are trained to never offer compensation for a horrible experience, only apologies.
You can get much better in South Beach for the price, including the hotel right next door.
