My family - 2 adults and 2 teenage girls - spent the weekend at the Sagamore at the end of a long holiday in Florida. We were looking for a bit of luxury and comfort to round off our holiday in style and we certainly found it here!
We booked a one bedroomed ocean front suite which cost about $400 per night but it was superb and well worth the splurge especially in a town where hotel rooms are very expensive anway. We'd paid $222 for a night in a Hampton Inn when we arrived and although it was ok, the Sagamore was far more than twice as good for twice the price - it was incomparable.
Location is excellent. Right on the beach and 1 block from Lincoln Mall. We dumped our rental car before checking in and didn't need a car again all weekend.
The lobby is a beautiful white open space with some excellent art work - more like an art gallery than a hotel lobby. The receptionist was very friendly and very helpful - no hint of attitude at all and this was true for every single member of staff we encountered. A big relief really because we were a bit worried about that. We're not exactly decrepit but on the other hand our days of wearing high fashion and going clubbing are long past - we didn't want to feel out of place.
The suite was - excitingly - on the penthouse floor and overlooked straight down the pool and gardens to the beach. Fantastic view. We had a long hallway, a loft style lounge with a kitchenette and a sofa bed, a large balcony with table and chairs, a superb bedroom with an extremely comfortable bed and a large and luxurious bathroom. We were not disappointed in the room at all. Linens were first class - everything was really top quality.
We spent most of our two days around the pool which was also gorgeous. Its got a walk in end and is plenty warm enough and great to just relax in. Around the pool are a variety of really comfortable lounge chairs and plenty of umbrellas and the pool girls cover the chairs with towel covers and give you extra towels for your heads - really comfortable. The pool bar also serves snacks and the staff are really friendly and fun. One waiter took the trouble to speak to nearly everyone and was just so nice. He chatted to the kids, to us, to the cool 20s and 30s that were hanging out - really made a good atmosphere.
There are also cabanas for more privacy which would be nice if you had babies.
To get to the beach you just walk through the gate and you're there. Each room gets a free pair of beach lounges and an umbrella and towels. You just sign a book and they set it all up for you. The beach was great for swimming and walking.
At night the hotel underwent a real change as Social at Sagamore took over the lobby and the gardens/pool bar. It was heaving with lots of beautiful people having a great time. The garden is set up with little outdoor "rooms" showing video art and looks very beautiful and of course there is music. The hotel restaurant looked great - it was also packed. They had a velvet ribbon out front keeping attendance down but as residents you are just ushered in. We grabbed some drinks and sat in the garden and enjoyed the music and watching the scene.
I was very glad that our room was on the 6th floor because when we finally turned in, it was absolutely silent and we got a great nights sleep. If you had a garden room you had better be a party animal but if you were - what a fantastic place to have a room! From your terrace you could sit in your own private area at one of the hottest lobby scenes in Miami Beach.
The concierge was superb - she organised an airport car for us and was just really helpful and fabulous.
It was just the most comfortable and pleasant place to stay - everything was good - we all felt we could easily have stayed a week and just had a wonderful time. Hopefully one day in the future we will do just that!
