This is an upmarket hotel in a fantastic location - right on the beach, half a block from Lincoln Road Mall shops and restaurants and 5 - 10 minutes walk from Ocean Drive. The decor is cool and white, which is stylish, but not cosy.
The rooms are well equipped and big. We had booked a suite, expecting this to have a view and or balcony. The suite itself was great - particularly liked the big L-shaped sofa and the kitchenette. The bedroom and bathroom were also fine, with a comfortable bed. A coffee machine was also a nice touch. The fridge was broken, however.
The downside was that what was not mentioned (booked via Expedia) was that what Americans call a 'Limited View' in this hotel actually means a wall of a (much taller) hotel next door being refurbished about 6 feet away from your windows. If you stood on the sofa and really craned your neck then you could catch a glimpse of the ocean, but in a high-priced beachside property I expected better.
Second gripe was that on checking in you are offered the option of paying a daily fee for 'Breakfast, Wireless and beach chairs' at just under 20 dollars per person. If you wanted breakfast, wireless and beach chairs every day, this would not be bad, but only wanting wireless I felt ripped off. The hotels wireless for one device per day was 11 dollars by itself.
Valet parking is also expensive, off site but presumably in an uncovered lot, judging by the appearance of the car when returned
Last negative observation was that only the beach bar appeared to be open, none of the other bars. Not a huge obstacle, as the location means you are in the thick of things in South Beach.
Now the positives: Having negotiated an upgrade rate to one of the bungalows, we were able to spend our last three nights in one of the upper tier bungalows. Still no real beach view, but two balconies overlooking the outdoor area between the pool and the main hotel. Excellent accommodation indeed. A very relaxing stay, in spite of the endless pumped music from the neighbouring hotels.
Many other reviewers have noted the service levels at this hotel, and I would totally agree. The staff are without fail cheerful, courteous, attentive and helpful - some of the best service of this visit to Florida. In particular, when listening and responding to my complaints about the room/fridge/wireless etc, Linford on the front desk was outstanding - a real professional job of understanding the issues and reaching acceptable agreement on the outcomes.
There was a wide mix of clientele at the hotel, from families with (very) young children, through young adults, some business people, couples and some older clients too. All seemed relaxed and happy.
So, some positives and some negatives, although in general I would say this is a good hotel, although some of the hotels nearby would potentially be livelier/cosier and possibly better value for money.
Be aware that many of the rooms, even the suites, do not have a view
