On our last visit to Miami beach (April 20 to 23) we booked Hotel 18. We got there earlier than check-in time but the room was ready so we checked- in early without any difficulty. The accommodations were small but very comfortable. It was like having a little apartment away from home. I was especially impressed with the efficiency kitchen. Actually, I loved it!! Dishes, pots and pans were basically brand new. They had plates, spoons, forks, knives everything you might want/need to prepare a small meal. Other amenities included, a microwave, a small fridge, a toaster, a coffee maker, dish washing liquid, a dish washing sponge, a roll of paper towels, an iron & small iron board and hair blower. They dont have any safe for your valuables. Toiletries and towels were available too. Everything for use was clean, BUT they can sure do a better job with the windows. They were seriously filthy. I can’t completely blame the housekeeping for this because the whole area where the hotel is located is under construction and this dirties the windows ALOT. But Hotel 18 doesn’t have a great view anyway, so the windows (although they can use a SERIOUS hose-down) are not so important. The area is VERY noisy during the day due to all this construction but I’m sure this will come to an end at some point in time. But the Monday we were there noise/work started around 7:30AM. The room we were staying at (218) was showing signs of mold on the bathroom's ceiling and a little bit on the grout/edges of the tub. That is expected due to the humidity of Miami Beach but they should probably try some Tylex on those spots!
Probably the best thing of Hotel 18 is its LOCATION!! It’s just about a block and a half away from the beach, a few more steps on the other direction and you’ll find the “Strip”, the Convention Center and all the great shops of the area. There is a 24hr-CVS (pharmacy) two short blocks from the hotel. There you can find anything and everything you might need for your stay (even frozen meals if that is what you are looking for-HA!). Two blocks the other way and you'll find a "bodega" where you can buy any grocery you'd want to have for your stay (I bought whole wheat bread, eggs, milk, cheese, coffee and a few other things-they sell small convenient containers of everything!!) Needless, to say, breakfast/lunch cost us only like $40 for the whole stay. But truthfully there is no need for this either because there is a 24hrs diner one block from the hotel. The hotel has parking but we didn’t have a car so we didn’t use it. BUT we definitely observed that non-parking areas are taken very seriously in Miami Beach. Lastly, after we partied at the strip until morning we came "home" and had something to eat in the nice inside-terrace. Everybody was courteous and there was no craziness at the terrace at that time of the night- It was great! I felt safe at all times.
On our last day, we needed late check-out (flight was in the evening). The administration didn’t want to give us the “ok” on the late check-out until very last minute. We had to wake up early, go to the office at 8:30 am to request the late check-out. Regular, check out is at 11am and word authorizing late check-out didn’t come until 10am. NEVERTHELESS, housekeeping STILL knocked at outdoor at 10:30am. I was the one who had to notify them about out late checkout time of 4:30pm. BUT OF COURSE, housekeeping came back and knocked at our door AGAIN at 4:00pm. That was annoying!! We paid $60 for the late check-out, while some luxury hotels usually charge $50. It’s not like we were going to sneak our stay there until next day!!! So they didn’t have to “announce” that it was going to be 4:30pm.
All and all, I would definitely recommend this hotel for budgeted visitors. We will definitely check for availability the next time we escape to Miami Beach for a few days! Love MIAMI and their awesome people!!
